Seems like I’m in the minority recommending smaller deck sizes, but 80 cards is... pretty big. That’s pushing Moria levels!
Besiegers first and foremost have to control a site. In a 60-card deck I’ll usually have Siege Troop x4 and Troop Tower x3, although Siege Troops can clog against the wrong decks so that’s sometimes worth cutting down. These are pretty much the "guaranteed" site control cards, independent of how many companions your opponent is playing (Gorgoroth Swarm) or the luck of the draw (Din of Arms). For each card you run beyond 60 the chances of drawing one of these early goes down and the risk of delaying your Shadow goes up.
This sometimes means cutting down or even leaving behind perfectly good cards for the sake of consistency and getting the job done.
For example, let’s drop Gorgoroth Officer, Gothmog’s Warg, a copy of Grond, a copy of Mordor Pillager, and possibly some Gothmogs and Sappers to slim it down to 30-ish. What have we really lost?
Gorgoroth Officer: Expensive, and the Orcs it plays don’t get to contribute until the fierce skirmishes, at which point the original Orcs will be sitting on the sidelines. The Sapper seems better here.
Gothmog’s Warg: Combos nicely with the Siege Troop, but it’s still a combo that’s not worth a precious slot in my eyes.
Grond: Good card, but it’s also unique and I’m looking to save room.
Mordor Pillager: Meta specific. Do you see Three Hunters more often or decks with less than 3 cultures more often?
Gothmog: For a swarming deck the wounding aspect seems out of place. He’s also expensive, unique, and dependent on the number of sites you control. Pretty popular card, but I’d at least drop some.
Gorgoroth Sapper: Not terribly important to draw early because minions will have to be stacked first before it can be useful.
Hopefully these won’t be missed, and in their place you can draw Troop Tower, Ithil Stone, Encirclement, and all the crucial cards your deck needs to function.
Finally, maybe I shouldn’t be suggesting more cards to add, but Gorgoroth Soldier is great. He only costs so he can escort those "To play, spot a Orc" cards easily. He’s an incredible cycler. And most importantly, in the early sites against choke, you can drop him with a Troop Tower and you’re almost guaranteed to control a site. If you’re willing to ditch your entire hand, your opponent will have to give him 5 wounds to kill him. |

i’ve said it time and time again as well... however, i don’t think that you should chop it down to 30 cards just for 30 cards sake.
pick carefully, and pick 4 or 5.
that should help you enough to avoid completely messing up your hand.
you don’t want to end up with a solid 15 twilight, damaged opponent’s fellowship, and you have 2 minions that you can play. that is frustrating.
it needs to be small enough so that you can pound them each site. |
