I put together this starting fellowship, based on the cards being able to spot each other to meet the starting twilight cost.
I have had conflicting comments about it and would like to get a final opinion.
Frodo (Protected by Many)
The One Ring (Answer to All Riddles)
Farmer Maggot (Hobbit of the Marsh) cost 1
Pippin (Wearer of Black and Silver) cost 1
Merry (Loyal Companion) cost 1
Rosie Cotton (Barmaid) cost 1
Quickbeam (Bregalad) Cost 4 (-1 for each Ent and unbound Hobbit)
Skinbark (Fladrif) Cost 7 (-1 for each Ent and unbound Hobbit)
Host of Fangorn Cost 13 (- 2 for each Ent and unbound Hobbit)
Ent Horde Cost 15 (- 2 for each Ent and unbound Hobbit) |

First of all, welcome to CC!  If you have gamelplay questions such as this, post them in the "gameplay" section of the forum.
As for your question, you could keep all four hobbits and quickbeam in your starting fellowship, but the twilight reduction bonus isn’t enough to play any of the other ents in there with them. Also, if you write the companions names as such, Farmer maggot, hobbit of the marish, they will turn red and a link will appear that will take you to the card. Remember to keep in mind, Frodo isn’t an unbound hobbit so you can’t spot him to get the -1 or -2 twilight cost for your ents.

Doesn’t work. Sorry. Each companion in the starting fellowship is played one at a time. They don’t hit the table simultaneously. Thus it doesn’t work.
What does work, however, is using the new Rise of Saruman hobbits, Merry, In the Bloom of Health and Pippin, in the Bloom of Health.
Something like this.
Frodo, Protected by Many - 
The One RIng, Answer to All Riddles
Merry, IN the Bloom of Health- 
Pippin, In the Bloom of Health-
Farmer Maggot, Hobbit of the Marish-
Quickbeam, Bregalad (twilight cost - 3 for 3 hobbits and -2 for two ents, -5 total)-
Skinbark, Fladrif (-3 for hobbits and -3 for ents, -6 total)-
Host of Fangorn (-6 for 3 hobbits and -8 four 4 ents, -14 total) -
Ent Horde (-6 for hobbits and -10 for ents, -16 total)-
Total: 
I run a deck that uses this starting fellowship, minus the Ent Horde. (leaves breathing room for my other ents).
And PT is right, this should be in gameplay.

You could also use another unbound hobbit before playing Skinbark to allow for a 9 member fellowship.
For example
Rosie Cotton, Barmaid (not suggested, unless you’ll be discarding someone for Sam and even then it’s iffy)
Fredegar Bolger, Fatty (decent choice)
... (not sure who else, if anyone) |
