Spell.
If a spell is played, exert The Balrog to cancel all effects of that spell and return it to its owner’s hand. You may remove to exert a companion of that spell’s culture.
“‘What it was I cannot guess, but I have never felt such a challenge....It nearly broke me. For an instant the door left my control and began to open!’”
Good, but too limited to actually see any use. If it was event and the second bit was for spell, that would be nice.
I fear that would be too powerful, though. And I have several spell conditions, so it would eliminate them.
Remember, if my theoretical sets were released, they would bring back spells in a BIG way. (This set has 15, and the previous set Lasting Alliances has 8, including one that’s actually a spell.) Later sets will have plenty of spells too, including even some ones down the road. Since spells tend to be VERY powerful (and commonplace in my sets), I think this is okay as is.

To play, spot The Balrog.
Plays on a Wizard companion.
Each time the fellowship moves, bearer must exert.
“‘What an evil fortune! And I am already weary.’”
Bearer should be any companion, or it isn’t worth the deck space. Make the last bit ’If bearer is a Wizard...’
Disagreed, because then it would be an entirely different card. The original worked only for Gandalf...I’ve tripled the potential already! |

Check out Lasting Alliances, The Road Ahead, and Ages of Middle-earth, three of my five dream card sets that make up Wars of the Ring. Oh, and I have a trade list now!
Also, if you're into DCs or RPGs (or even if you're not!), check out Realms of Middle-earth, the sequel to CG's "DC Adventure", Realms of the North! |

Here’s one those conditions that works like an event that Big D was so fond of in Black Rider and Bloodlines. It works will any minion, but you’ll quickly see it’s really catered towards Ol’ Balgy. Enjoy!
The Terror Under Caradhras
Condition • Support Area
Skirmish: Discard this condition to make a minion strength +1 for each of the following that is true: it is at a mountain or underground site; it is bearing an artifact; it is bearing 2 artifacts; you can spot an exhausted companion.
“‘An evil of the Ancient World it seemed, such as I have never seen before.’” |

I accept that, good point.

You’re right, but then I think it should be an entirely different card, because I wouldn’t use either the original or your version of it. Obviously, yours is 10 times better than Decipher’s, but if it won’t get use, what’s the point? You might as well make another card.
The condition is great!

Alright, here’s one inspired by Durin’s Tower; it’s a reprint without really being a reprint. Enjoy!
•Wisps of Dark Smoke
Condition • Support Area
While the fellowship is in region 2 and at an underground site, The Balrog’s twilight cost is -3.
Skirmish: Place this condition beneath your draw deck to make a unique minion strength +3.
“Right across the floor, close to the feet of two huge pillars a great fissure had opened. Out of it a fierce red light came, and now and again flames licked at the brink and curled about the bases of the columns.” |
