The morning air hung heavy around the Beornings. The Beornings were great warriors, and fought with ferocity when attacked by the orcs which they hated with a passion. Long had the Beorning defended the lands of the north by keeping the orcs at bay, but now they themselves were being attacked. The Beornings had assembled themselves on a small hill, and were now stretched out in one long line trying to repel the invaders as best they could. A group of rangers stood on the Beorning’s right flank, and a group of dwarves from the lonely mountain on the left flank. Durail, unspoken leader of the rangers, estimated how many men they had total. Four hundred men. More than half were Beornings; many equipped with broad axes, the rest were in bear form. there were possibly one hundred dwarves, and fifty rangers. The orcs Durail estimated had at least one thousand five hundred, plus two trolls. This was not going to be easy!

Durail look over at Grimbeorn, leader of the Beornings, who nodded slightly. Durail drew his sword Flame. “Draw your swords!” He called to the rangers. The Beornings had started to advance in a straight line, toward the orcs. When the Beornings were a good ten yards ahead of the rangers, Durail called to his men. “Charge!” The rangers broke into a mad run. They and the Beornings broke into the orc lines, while the dwarves followed behind the main attack force, hewing the Orcs that managed to escape the head assault.

Durail hit the orcs in a dead run, slicing his way through his opponents with furry. Flame glowed orange-red, as it found its mark on every opponent. The orcs had scattered when the rangers had first hit, but now they were reforming, and every step was challenged by gigantic orcs. Finally neither side could move forward.

A roar filled the air. Durail looked up only to find a very large troll with a very large mace moving toward him and his fellow rangers.

Durthar, leader of the Orc army, unslung his bow from around his quiver. Dipping it in oil carried by an Orc, he strung it to his bow. An Orc touched a flaming torch to the tip of the arrow, and it burst into flames. With a sharp twanging sound, the arrow sped into through the air and into the heart of a Dwarf. The Orcs cheered loudly, and Durthar replaced his bow and drew his longsword. "Orcs!" he yelled. "A feast of blood and flesh will await those Orcs who are the survivors of this battle!" At these words, many of the Orcs began to lick their lips, and a few heads had to be removed to restore order. Durthar spoke again. "They must die!" he said. "Attack!"

The Orcs rushed onward, and the faces of the Beornings blanched. The Orcs were estimated at 1,500 in number, but a poor view had decieved the eyes of the Beornings. A slope lay just behind the visible Orcs, and Orcs swarmed upon it. The true number of the Orc army was eight thousand, and the Beornings realized their mistake as the Orcs poured upon them in great numbers.

Durthar slew many; three Dwarves and two Beornings fell under his mighty blade, and the Orcs did not waver. Within minutes, the ground was moistened with blood of the Free Peoples.

Durail watched in horror as thousands of orcs poured out from behind the hills. the troll had been stopped, due to the rush of orcs, but the beornings were quiet out numbered. With a quick slash, Durail hewed three orcs.

"well that is three less we have to worry about!"

A sudden pain swept through his body, and orc had punched him in the back. two seconds later, the orc lay motionless on the ground. The cry or the Beornings filled the air, they had gained strength by seeing there friends and relatives slashed down. Even though the rangers dwarves and Beornings fought fierocity. Durail watched in horror as two dwarves were hacked down. Without more help, this would be one of the worst defeat in the history of middle earth!

Durthar’s blood was stained with the blood of early twenty Beornings, rangers, and Dwarves. A Dwarf with a broad-bladed axe approached him, and with a quick swipe of his sword, the Dwarf fell headless.

The skies opened and poured rain upon the ground that was already wet with blood. Only eighty Orcs had been slain, and the Orcs had managed to kill nearly twice that number.

At the crest of the slope, three more trolls appeared. Durail’s will faltered.

Lyon stumbled out of the woods, eager to see what all the comotion was about. A horrible sceen met his eyes. An army of orcs was mercilessly slaughtering beornings, dwarves, and rangers. He saw the rivers of blood flowing from the battlefield, and he smiled.

A good fight.

He drew both swords and advanced on the orcs from behind, attempting to cut a swath to the beornings and orcs. Of course, this plan was doomed to failure.

He didn’t really care.

Durail look on the scene in disbeliefe. How was this happening? No matter, Durail had made up his mind, he was going to make the orcs afraid of the rangers as they had never been before. He drew his dagger, and charged into a group of orcs. the orcs scattered from before him as he beheaded five orcs. with another swift move, he chopped down two great orcs. Durail stood up beside another ranger, and whispered to him, that ranger moved on and whispered in another rangers ear, this went on until all fifty rangers knew what was going on. they slowly crept up the small hill they had charged down not even Durthar saw the rangers leaving. advancing up the hill, they noticed another man approaching. they motioned him to come up to them. Durail saw his men moving back, all he had to do was hold the orcs off a few more miniutes.

Durail motioned for Lyon to join his rangers on the hill. He quickly moved to join them. A ranger bent down to whisper in his ear...

Lyon smiled viciously.

all the rangers and Lyon fit arrows in their bows. together they fired, then moved then fired again. the orcs were so confused on where the arrows were coming from. the orcs gave ground! After one more volley of arrows, the rangers and Lyon drew their swords, and charged yelling at the top of there lungs. the orcs broke their lines not knowing how many men were attacking. but this small attack wasn’t all the rangers had worked up...

Gagnut was closer to the front of the battle, he hated that the archers picked him out of the many orcs, "he was special", he thought, he wouldn’t stand here for target practice, he had enough, he charged towards the line of Rangers, he could see them drawing back. "Ha" he said aloud "They are no better than Rabbits", but then a score of archers came from behind the ranks of men and fired. Twump, twump, twupm, kling, 3 arrows hit an orc right next to him, and the other one bounched off his heavy armor, he was running back to the lines while rows of orcs were mowed down.

Durthar’s armies were being picked off like fish in a barrel. He was furious. He muttered a command to an Orc recruit, and within a minute, nearly five hundred Orc bows were strung with arrows. In one motion, the archers released their arrows. Three hundred of the arrows found a deadly mark; the rest glanced off armor or missed their targets completely. Durthar grinned; the battle was not yet over.
