can cards stacked on cards be "spotted"? for instance, if i have shards of narsil in play, and i stack two artifacts on it, can other cards that require the spotting of artifacts spot the stacked artifacts?

No. They’re not in play. They can only be spotted by cards that refer to stacked cards. Like in Gnawing, Biting, Hacking, Burning. |

Straight from the Comprehensive Rule Book 4.0
Comprehensive Rule Book 4.0 wrote: stack
Stacking a card is not playing a card. Stacked cards are placed face up and may be looked at by any player at any time.
Stacked cards are not in play and are not active. You cannot spot them. They do not count for uniqueness. A stacked unique card may be in play elsewhere. Multiple copies of the same unique card may be stacked together.
See also leaving play, liberate, site. Usually the best way to find an official answer to the question is to look through the Comprehensive rule book. All it takes is Adobe Acrobat Reader. This program contains a very good search feature and found the section on stacking quite quickly. I believe the rule book is linked in a sticky at the top of the Gameplay Questions Forum

Ohhh, that doesn’t sound healthy. Is it just a really slow download or is there a problem with the Adobe software? |

i’m not really sure, possibly the adobe software. after i click the link to the rulebook, the computer disconnects from the internet, and the rulebook shuts down. after that the computer won’t reconnect to the internet, and i’ve been told not to click the link again for that reason. |

That’s happened to me before, too. I suspect it might be your version of the software. At least in my case, it was because I had an older version that, for whatever reason, didn’t like the rulebook. *shrug* |

Not all cards in play can be spotted. Active cards can be spotted. |
