The Changing Face of Gameplay

With Rise of Saruman out on the market for a month, the introduction of three major strategies leaves the world of Lord of the Rings in the midst of an upheaval. So, now its time to step back and survey the damage. Well…maybe not damage, but these new strategies revolutionize the way Lord of the Rings is played. Take for example Rohan’s new strategy. Unlearn everything you knew about protecting the ring-bearer and throw him into the fray. Revolutionary? How about the new Warg-Riders? The lower strength the better? Yes, Rise of Saruman has changed the way Lord of the Rings will be played for a long time.

Powerful Decks:

The three major strategies introduced by the Rise of Saruman are Rohan Fighting Frodo, Elven Hunters, Men Support Area Possessions, and Orc Warg-Riders. These strategies have revolutionized the way Lord of the Rings is played and will be played in the near future.

Also getting a significant boost to their strategies are Gandalf followers, especially with Gandalf men and Gondor. So, let’s take a look at these updates before launching into the new strategies.

Old Strategies

Gandalf Men

Well…the most significant change to this strategy is that the men can actually fight instead of Gandalf swooping in to save the day (very irritating, you know, when you’re trying to kill an Orc and Gandalf feels the need to zap him before you lop of his head).

Without further ramblings, how do Gandalf men fight? One word, followers. Now two words, Barliman Butterbur, Red-Faced Landlord. Okay, that was four words (unless you count Red-Faced as two) but hey, the title was two. Eh? Never mind. I’m rambling again. Brick wall

Crucial Cards

Barliman Butterbur, Red-Faced Landlord: A sweet card, this card explodes for each follower you attach. With Brand in play and 4x Strange Meeting out, you don’t need to use all your followers to get him huge. Not to mention Gandalf, Leader of the Company

Meneldor, Misty Mountain Eagle: Kinda…duh. Any deck revolving around Gandalf followers absolutely HAS to include this one. Period. Hey, if you have a deck running only Pallando, you may want to run him anyway. Yeah, okay, that may be extreme, especially because of his spotting requirements, but hey, this card’s sweet.

Decklist: (33 cards)

Ring-Bearer:
The One Ring, The Ring of Rings
Isildur, Bearer of Heirlooms

Starting Fellowship
Barliman Butterbur, Red-Faced Landlord
Brand, King of Dale

Companions:
Gandalf, Leader of the Company x 3
Ghan-buri-Ghan, Chieftain of the Woses x 2
Erland, Dale Counselor x 3
Radagast, The Brown x 2

Followers:
Gwaihir, the Windlord
Alatar, Final Envoy
Meneldor, Misty Mountain Eagle x 2
Pallando, Far-travelling One x 2

Possession:
Glamdring, Foe-hammer

Conditions:
Strange Meeting x 4
Watch and Wait x 2

Events:
For a While Less Dark x 4
Guidance of the Istari x 4

Basically, get 4x Strange Meeting out, Meneldor and your other followers as soon as possible. Then, Barliman explodes, and all followers give a strength +4 bonus, not to mention the follower bonus. This deck removes burdens, conditions, etc, is tough to swarm, and slaughters beatdown. If you want to add Have Patience, it would also heal well too.

But where’s Grimbeorn? Well…you could run him in place of Ghan-Buri-Ghan, but its not necessary. Ghan-Buri-Ghan is tough to overwhelm anyway, and could actually win skirmishes. But the key here is swarm stopper. Ghan-Buri-Ghan is defender +1 at forest sites, making him ideal for stopping swarms. Strength 19 Barliman Butterbur is more than enough to compensate for not using Grimbeorn.

With the beginning of Treachery and Deceit spoilers, the Beorning Axe promises to make Gandalf men a force to be reckoned with pretty soon, but as is, Gandalf men are pretty tough.

The men of Dale weren’t the only guys who got pumped up this time around. Gondor also got more cards.

Gondor

With the banning of Madril, Defender of Osgiliath, the all-powerful Ithilien Blade deck was dealt a severe blow. But with a new ring-bearer and several new artifacts, the Gondor culture in general did very well. The pinnacle of this is the Noble Leaders deck. Of course, you know me and that I can never do a straightforward deck and have to make it as crazy as possible, but hey! That just makes the article more interesting.

Crucial Cards:

Throne of Minas Tirith. The king of token reinforcing, this card is now indispensable for any Noble Leaders deck. With its possession killing ability and token reinforcing ability, what’s not to love about this throne? Other than the picture….anyway…

Gandalf, Returned. Wait…Gandalf? Since when was he a Gondor companion? Since never. But with his crazy token reinforcing ability, he fits in perfectly with any token deck at all, be it Gondor or Gandalf. The ability to pull out a possession when he’s played makes him a good choice as well.

Anduril, Sword that was Broken. Wow. The best Anduril printed so far. Unlike Anduril, Flame of the West, it can be wielded in addition to other weapons. Which means Knife of the Galadhrim, Aragorn’s Bow, et cetera. Its site liberation and condition removal abilities can throw a wrench into a bunch of strategies. Our foes are not weak, not harmless, and not wielding the ring. Yeah, lame puns, but so what? It’s a cool sword.

Decklist (30 cards)

Faramir, Bearer of Quality
The One Ring, The Ring of Rings

Gondorian Prowler
Aragorn Strider
Gandalf, Leader of Men

Gandalf, Returned
Boromir, Hero of Osgiliath
Denethor, Lord of Minas Tirith
Tradesman from Lebennin x 3

Glamdring, Foe-Hammer
Ithilien Blade x 3

Anduril, Sword that was Broken
Throne of Minas Tirith

Noble Leaders x 3
Heirs of Gondor x 3
Watch and Wait x 2

Pallando, Far-Travelling One

Well-Traveled x 2
Saved from the Fire x 4

Try to get Saved from the Fire on your first hand. Use it to pull out Denethor, Faramir, and another card. When you get Well-Travelled in your hand, use Saved from the Fire on Gandalf to pull Gandalf, Returned, Pallando, and Watch and Wait, play Falls of Rauros, and play Gandalf, Returned next time. Abuse tokens, pull burdens, get rid of conditions.

Anyway, so I’ve lost it. But at least I kept you entertained.

Noble Leaders wasn’t the only deck to get new cards, however. Although Madril was banned, rangers live on. Ithilien Blade may not be used as much for its maneuver ability, but hey, strength +3 is cool. Since we already have a completely sweet somewhat weird Gondor deck, I’m not going to

Crucial Cards

Faramir, Bearer of Quality. Obviously sweet for a ranger deck, minions get auto-roaming. His threat adding ability would have worked well with Madril, but alas, Madril is banned. Oh well, he still makes minions roaming. And that’s nothing to sneeze at.

Madril, Loyal Lieutenant. The new Madril, although not as good as the old one, still works. The Ithilien Blade can still be wielded in a pinch (such as Sauron, the Lord of the Rings), and his condition protecting ability is nothing to sneeze at. And since the rangers are going to have to actually fight, protecting Heirs of Gondor or Noble Leaders could be very important.

Spirit of the White Tree. Well…this card’s good for any Gondor deck, but I didn’t use him in the Noble Leaders deck, so he ended up in this section. Sloppy, I know, but hey, give me a break. Anyway, automatic Faramir, Son of Denethor, which is SWEET! Ulaire Enquea, Thrall of the One can’t get the necessary burdens to discard the condition. Of course, any corruption stops it, but if you use burden prevention, such as Tolman Cotton, this card is pretty nifty.

Okay drum roll please…

Um…drum roll?

Ahem. DRUM ROLL!!!!!!!!

Fine, be that way.

New Strategies

Fightin’ Frodo

In a land called Middle Earth, a company of nine companions swore to protect the ring-bearer on his quest to destroy the ring in the Cracks of Doom.

In a land called the Lord of the Rings Trading Card game, the Rohirrim pledged their loyalty to the ring-bearer and then threw him to his enemies.

Wha…?

Unlearn everything you ever knew about protecting the ring-bearer. Everything. Now, throw him into the midst of the fray and watch your guys beef up fast.

Crucial Cards

Eowyn, Northwoman. Sweet! Exert her to throw a minion into an identity crisis, meaning an easy win for Frodo. Did I mention she can’t take wounds?

Into the Caves. Eowyn, Northwoman in condition form. And without the cost of exertion. This card is useful, but with condition discarding running rampant, and then having to play this from your draw deck, its better to use Eowyn as well.

Aragorn, Defender of Rohan. Sweetness. This guy makes all your guys hunter 1 which means Gamling get his pump as well.

Theoden, Northman, King of Rohan. Same as Aragorn but with another cool special and a solid strength +1 bonus for everyone, as opposed to the fluctuating hunter bonuses of Aragorn.

Where Now The Horse. Strength +5 pump for Frodo. We all know about its drawback text, but its still a pretty cool card. However, the deck below does not need Where now The Horse.

Throne of the Golden Hall. Two words, wound prevention. Tossing wounds all over the place to prevent anyone from dying is pretty cool. Of course, you’d have to make sure that your opponent can’t use all the extra twilight, but it’s a pretty cool card. Then with Saruman running rampant and Grima coming out next set, it can be pretty helpful.

Decklist: (33 cards)

Frodo, Weary from the Journey
The One Ring, The Ring of Doom

Eowyn, Northwoman
Gamling, the Old

Aragorn, Defender of Rohan x 3
Theoden, Northman, King of Rohan x 3
Eomer, Northman x 2
Sam, Great Elf Warrior x 3

Throne of the Golden Hall

Eowyn’s Sword, Dernhelm’s Blade
Eomer’s Spear, Trusty Weapon
Anduril, Sword that Was Broken
Herugrim, Sword of the Mark
Sting, Weapon of Heritage
Hobbit Sword

Into the Caves
Long Live the Halflings x 4
A Promise x 4
Measure of Comfort x 4

Your main engine is Sam, Great Elf Warrior with A Promise. Frodo is an easy strength 9, wearing the one ring gives him hunter 3, which is a sure strength 12. If that’s not enough, Long Live the Halflings means he can take on Sauron without fear. And he may want to, since Sauron loses fierce, enduring, and damage+1. That’s what I call a Fightin’ Frodo. If by some freak accident Frodo dies, Sam is there to take the ring. Not to mention that Sam is pretty tough as well. Give him Sting and he’s an anti-corruption engine, winning skirmishes easily with a base 11 strength. And then, with Long Live the Halflings he can even whup up on some of the tougher Nazgul. Let’s hunt some of those Black Riders, Frodo!

Elven Hunters

I would put a witty opening in here, but nothing seems appropriate for the elves. Anyway, with the introduction of Rumil, Silvan Elf and Orophin, Silvan Elf, the already powerful elf archery deck got some new cards. Or not. Actually, a new deck emerged, the elven hunters. Hey, that was somewhat of a decent opening! Not witty, but hey...work with me.

Crucial Cards

Orophin, Silvan Elf. Strength pump while skirmishing a wounded minion and a sweet wounding ability.

Rumil, Silvan Elf. His text is a little more difficult to work with, as his primary bonus, archer, wouldn’t help with traditional archery fire. However, his sweet wounding ability takes care of that, until you max out your threats. But the strength +1 bonus whether skirmishing a wounded minion or not is cool.

Elven Guardian. Toned down versions of Orophin and Rumil, these guys can bear elven bows, fight decently, and heal if necessary.

Namarie. Mass condition removal. Any deck that ran conditions is now destroyed.

Decklist: (33 cards)

Galadriel, Bearer of Wisdom
The One Ring, The Ring of Rings

Legolas, of the Woodland Realm
Rumil, Silvan Elf

Orophin, Silvan Elf x2
Elven Guardian x4

Elven Bow x4

Farewell to Lorien x4
Many Miles x4
Mighty Shot

Into the West x3
Namarie x2
Shadow Between x2
Take Up the Bow x2
Elven Marksmanship x3

Basically, no strategy. Everything except the events hit the table as soon as you get them. Use Orophin and Rumil’s Text frequently, as the number of companions will usually mean enough threats to get you through the game. Or you can always suicide an Elven Guardian to reload the threats (not recommended). Anyway, don’t be afraid to toil as Shadow Between can heal well as can Farewell to Lorien. Which makes suiciding your Elven Guardian to reload threats and then heal with Farewell to Lorien...still a crazy idea but not so far-fetched. Or you could splash Aragorn, Driven by Need.

Play your events carefully, as you may not always have enough archery to kill in the crucial archery phases. Don’t waste a copy of Many Miles to kill a minion that Orophin would have slaughtered.

And now for the brand new shadow sides!

Orc Wargs

"Send out your warg-riders! And bring a few trolls with them."

Well...the Orc warg deck has tons of potential. However, two decks come to mind as extremely powerful. First of all, the Troll Swarm, revolving around Troll’s Keyward, Keeper of the Beast and tons of trolls.

Crucial Cards

Troll’s Keyward, Keeper of the Beast. Duh. He’s the crux of the whole deck. He may not be from the Rise of Saruman set, but his text is good for generating twilight, but with a warg that gives an extra two vitality, this guy generates a huge amount of twilight.

Relentless Warg and Vicious Warg. Now for the Rise of Saruman cards. These wargs are AWESOME! Their vitality +2 bonus allows the effect of Troll’s Keyward, Keeper of the Beast to be doubled, meaning twice the trolls.

Decklist: (30 cards)

Troll’s Keyward, Keeper of the Beast x 4
Porter Troll x 4
Cave Troll of Moria, Savage Menace x 3
Tower Troll x 3
Beastly Olog-hai x 4
Ordnance Grunt x 3
Mountain-Troll
Ulaire Enquea, Duplicitous Lieutenant

Saruman, Servant of Sauron x 2

Relentless Warg
Vicious Warg x 3

Goblin Hordes

The best thing to do is pair this with a massive filtering deck. Cycle until you get tons of Trolls in your hand and then use a mounted Troll’s Keyward, Keeper of the Beast to throw out massive twilight and play as many trolls as possible. If paired with a massive filtering deck, such as Saved from the Fire, this deck can kill very early, playing enough trolls to kill a fellowship before your opponent’s fellowship can set up. And oh yeah, once you get enough trolls out, toil The Cave Troll of Moria to play it for free. Or at least dirt cheap.

The second deck from the Orc Warg strategy wounds like crazy. This deck revolves around getting Scouting Orc on a warg and exerting to wound.

Crucial Cards

Scouting Orc. Not a Rise of Saruman card, but it kills. Exert to wound. With two vitality, this guy used to throw out one wound. Until now.

Relentless Warg and Vicious Warg. Mount him up and he dishes out three wounds. And its easy to win, the Scouting Orc gets pretty tough with a warg, meaning up to four wounds. Relentless Warg can also make him damage +1, against mono-culture decks.

Orkish Lackey. This card is SWEET! with Goblin Hordes to snatch it back, four copies of this minion kills, meaning instant death to almost any companion.

Saruman, Servant of Sauron. Free exertion with no spotting or attaching requirements. What could be better for an Orc grind? Simply makes the killing a lot easier, and hey! With two Scouting Orcs out, you may have room for another kill in the fierce skirmish.

Decklist: (35 cards)

Orkish Warg-Master x 4
Orkish Smith x 3
Scavenging Goblin x 3
Scouting Orc x 4
Mordor Scimitar x 3
Orkish Lackey x 4

Relentless Warg x 4
Vicious Warg x 2

Goblin Hordes x 4
Unforgiving Depths x 3

Saruman, Servant of Sauron

Use Orkish Lackey to slam people in the maneuver, use Orkish Scout on a warg to kill a companion almost instantly. Mordor Scimitar is a free exert, the wargs give three wounds, and if you win a skirmish, yet another wound, or maybe two with a Relentless Warg. And then you can use Goblin Hordes to pull out Scouting Orc and Orkish Warg-Master. Or four Orkish Lackeys to kill a companion.

Men Possession Swarm

"20 minions? YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING! THAT IS SO BROKEN!!!!!!!"

Well...of all the strategies this set, none are as powerful as the Men Possession Swarm. With an infinite loop, you can play every minion in your deck, on your possessions, and your discard pile. However, this deck is designed to keep your cards intact (so your opponent doesn’t rip them up).

Crucial Cards

Strange-Looking Men. Not from the Rise of Saruman, but his ability to throw possessions around is pretty nifty.

Easterling Dispatcher. An easy way to add lots of twilight.

Sunland Guard. Well...it plays all the minions stacked on your possessions.

Ceremonial Armor and Wildman Oath. The most important possessions in this deck, this card catches all the minions discarded from play.

Decklist: (35 cards)

Strange Looking Men x 4
Easterling Dispatcher x 4
Sunland Guard x 4
Saruman, Coldly Still x 2
Vengeful Primitive x 4
Stampeding Savage x 3

Ceremonial Armor x 3
Wildman’s Oath x 3
Pavise x 4

Countless Companies x 2
Last Days x 2

Get your Pavises on Countless Companies and play them all in the shadow phase, one on a Sunland Guard and one on Strange Looking Men. Use Sunland Guard to play minions off possessions, Easterling Dispatcher and Vengeful Primitive first to throw the twilight up to practically infinite. Then pull out your Stampeding Savage to discard him and play all the minions in your discard pile. When your Sunland Guard is exhausted, use Strange Looking Men to transfer Pavise to another Sunland Guard. When it gets discarded, it stacks on Ceremonial Armor and Wildman Oath to be played again by another Sunland Guard. In the meantime, you can use Last Days to play another minion from hand for cheap, he’s fierce and strength +2 until the regroup phase. Repeat, playing Easterling Dispatcher and Vengeful Primitve as needed to throw the twilight up. By the time the smoke clears, you should have played every minion on your possessions and in your discard pile.

The Changing Face of Gameplay:

Well...so Rise of Saruman turned out some pretty powerful decks. And they’re cool! Really cool! But what does this mean to standard format in the near future? What decks are good and what decks are bad?

Free Peoples:

Ithilien Blade: This all-powerful used to be the deck of choice in standard, Ithilien Blade was dealt a fatal blow with the banning of Madril, Defender of Osgiliath. Although the new Madril, Loyal Lieutenant makes up for this, and with the Soldier’s Cache begin released with the next set, Ithilien Blade survives, its era of rule is over.

Noble Leaders: The most powerful Gondor deck to emerge from Rise of Saruman, the noble leaders deck got several critical cards that could easily place it as the best strategy.

Gandalf Men: Gandalf men have always been fun to play with, and the Rise of Saruman makes them even better. Although not top-notch, the Gandalf men pack a punch and if paired with a shadow that sets them up fast enough, there could be cause for fear at your local tournament scene. With the spoiling of Beorning Axe from Treachery and Deceit, it seems that Gandalf men will get more cards in the future.

Fightin’ Frodo: With Rohan’s new Fightin’ Frodo deck, swarms die. This deck defeats the whole purpose of swarms. And having the ability to stand up to even Sauron unscathed, beatdown is also easy to defeat. Fightin’ Frodo will be a viable option in the tournament scene, and vies with Noble Leaders in power.

These new strategies pack quite a punch, but with the introduction of several new shadows, some old decks might emerge again as competitive.

Shadowplay: Shadowplay / Unheeded decks will pack quite a punch against the Scouting Orc decks. High vitality Hobbits with wounding should be able to kill the ever popular Scouting Orc deck. This deck could do very well with the Men swarm, as most of the minions are two vitality and with all the exertions being thrown around, Unheeded becomes more powerful. And as soon as Troll’s Keyward hits the table, he’s dead, or at least useless or greatly reduced power.

Gondor Wraiths: About to be rotated out, Gondor Wraiths can still pack a punch. With Swept Away, these guys are completely steeled against Scouting Orc and Orkish Lackey. Look out for your Aragorn, driven by Need, but this deck could come back with some force.

And finally, Ents: Ents will continue to remain a powerful strategy, their high strength, high vitality and Treebeard’s wounding ability will continue to kill swarms and beatdown ruthlessly.

Shadow:

Scouting Orc Grind: This deck packs a huge punch, and if Orkish Lackey is not banned soon, this deck could get out of control and kill companions right and left. Until Decipher bans a card to slow down this strategy, Scouting Orc grinds will rule the post-Rise of Saruman Tournament Scene.

Troll Swarm: Another powerful deck, this deck relies on a fast setup. If you don’t get that and your opponent sets up, this deck can still work as sheer mega beatdown, but would have to be coupled with a run deck in order to take advantage of a slowed-down opponent.

Men Possession Swarm: Another powerful deck, this infinite loop means instant death to almost anything. Requiring a extremely potent and well played wounding deck to break the loop, Men possession swarm will rule the post-Rise of Saruman world next to Scouting Orc grind.

I hope that this article has been informative and enabled you to play competitively in the post-Rise of Saruman world. Any comments, criticism, or questions will be welcome. I may not be able to answer as promptly as you may like, but I will as often as possible.

Special thanks to:

Elven Hunters....oh yeah...wait to vote then SoP, coming soon. I’ll have them up ASAP. May be a little while, though.

And as for the infinite loop, I’m not exactly sure how it works, but I’m researching it. I’ll update it when I figure it out. I know it revolves around suicide Strange Looking Men/Pavise.

As for the Orkish Lackey, I would just use him in a scouting Orc grind. Which is how I used him. So I covered him.

i haven’t read the article yet, i’ll be back to do that sometime in the future, but you might want to change "has" to "hath" in the title of the article, since you use the word "wrought" it seems to fit. just a thought Wink.

Men possession swarm

i’m sorry but I don’t get it Shocked
How will you manage to stack your minions on those possessions?
The only way I can see is to make Stampeding Hillsman survive till regroup which seems extremely difficult to me
or just discard stampeding savage to stack it on an empty possession which doesn’t make much sense Confused
Maybe i’m missing something Think [b]
