Using an often-overlooked card can reap huge rewards. Say hello to Figwit!
--- end description ---

"Umm...Lady Arwen...Lady Arwen...you’re going the wrong way! What exactly are you doing?"~Figwit (also known as Aegnor)

Standard Decklist
Expanded Decklist

Poor Aegnor. He just doesn’t seem like the brightest elf out there. His intelligence, unfortunately, has earned him the moniker of "Figwit" among many members of the Lord of the Rings Community. After all, he was the elf who just stood by as Arwen rode back to Rivendell. I actually think he gets a bad rap. After all, the other elves were just riding by, and didn’t even notice. But that aside, the card of Aegnor is in a similar situation. Most players don’t even consider it something to be used. I think otherwise. When I saw him, the first thing I thought was "how can I use and abuse this card?"

The most obvious way to get the most out of Aegnor is: have lots and lots of archers! And what’s the easiest way to have archers in an Elven deck? Elven Bow, one of the very best Elven cards that was ever printed. You can have 4x of these in play. If one of your companions is already an archer, that means a single Aegnor exertion makes any minion strength -5! Yeah, I think that’ll be winning skirmishes for you. Aegnor alone, however, is not enough for you to win every skirmish with. You need to look to some other strength reducers in LOTR...

The very first that jumps out at me is Sword of the Fallen, one of my favorite Hunters cards. -1 strength for each wound is nothing to sneeze at, especially when you’re exerting the minions during the skirmish! Combine this with Aegnor, and that’s -7 or -6 on a lot of minions-typically enough for an overwhelm, or at the least a win. If you have four of these out, your elves can win skirmishes left and right.

Another great strength reducer is Arwen, Queen of Elves and Men. Her ability is incredible, and can be even more powerful than Aegnor’s ability, especially when combined with Sword of the Fallen. You definitely want to think about including Arwen in this deck-after all, it is a deck with Figwit.

Along with Arwen comes Legolas, Elven Stalwart. Can you say "wow!"? Spot three minions with wounds, and now Legolas gets a whole lot more powerful. The problem, though, is being able to spot three minions that are wounNOLINKded. We have to have some method of directed archery wounding, so that we know we have three minions. The answer comes in Rise of Saruman, with Orophin, Silvan Elf and Rumil, Silvan Elf. This brother-brother duo works by directly wounding minions with threat addition and exertion. With these two guys working, Legolas can easily get that strength reduction versus bad guys.

But now we have a problem. Ring-bearer, Aegnor, Arwen, Legolas, and the two brothers...that makes six companions! And that’s a big no-no. So, we have to drop one of them. Aegnor and the brothers are out of the question, and obviously so is the Ring-bearer. In this case, I’d lean towards dropping Arwen, because she’s not an archer. If you want, though, you can replace Legolas with Arwen in your deck. Your specific meta might also dictate which option you want to use. For example, a meta where not very minions are played would be great for Arwen, but one where you see four-five minions on the table would be a Legolas meta.

In the end, we have a decklist somewhat like the one below. Not only does it have the companions we mentioned, and those two key possessions, but it also has some touches on the side. The Still Needed + Into the West combo is there to remove Silvan Elf threats, and we also have Shadow Between, so that those exertions get healed each turn. Finally, Nocked allows for more flexible wounding, and Seclusion is there as a must-have for any Elven deck.

Free Peoples (34 Cards)
Ring-Bearer and Ring
The One Ring, the Ring of Rings
Galadriel, Bearer of Wisdom

Starting Fellowship-2
Orophin, Silvan Elf
Rumil, Silvan Elf

Companions-8
Aegnor, Elven Escort 3x
Legolas, Elven Stalwart 4x

Events-10
Nocked 3x
Seclusion 3x
Still Needed 3x

Possessions-8
Elven Bow 4x
Sword of the Fallen 4x

Conditions-8
Into the West 3x
Shadow Between 4x

The strategy here is actually variable. Your typical archery count will be about 3 archery, more or less, and that’s not counting the wounds that you’ll be dishing out with the brothers and Nocked. Which means that Legolas’ skirmish should be won easily. Use Aegnor’s ability carefully, and minions will be falling like flies. Almost. Then, in the regroup, use Into the West and Shadow Between to remove threats and keep your elfies healthy. Prepare to waltz down the site path.

You thought Aegnor was good there? Check out what happens when he goes into Expanded! Because in Expanded, you’ve got this little thing called an Ally, see. This card doesn’t count towards the companion count for anything, so you can stuff allies into your deck like none other. But the best part? Aegnor’s text spots archers. Not archer companions. Archers. Which means that he can spot minion archers-or he can spot archer allies! Now take a look at those Site 6 allies. You’ve got four Elven allies that all naturally have the keyword "archer"! That’s -4 strength right there!

Furthermore, Orophin, Lorien Bowman and Rumil, Elven Protector have some pretty cool wounding abilities up their sleeves, in case you run into Orcs or Uruk-Hai...but those are just the icing on the cake. What we care about is the fact that they let Aegnor easily make a minion almost strength 0 with one exertion. Elven allies will help you immensely in this deck.

Unfortunately, the fact that you’re running Orophin and Rumil allies also means that you now can’t use Orophin and Rumil companions. So...we need more companions to fill that space up with! Arwen is back in! Since we’ve got Arwen, why not add in Aragorn? There’s actually good reason to use Aragorn...especially Aragorn, Thorongil. Another thing we should do, since we’ve already got a lot of archers, is ditch Legolas, since his ability is really hard to trigger. Instead, how about Lorien Swordsman? With Sword of the Fallen, this guy gets a Legolas-like ability when you only need to spot a single wound!

The final small trick that we get to use, since this is an Expanded deck, is Flashing Steel. An easy strength minus for any minion, enough to help you out in a pinch. With this card, Aegnor, Lorien Swordsman, and Sword of the Fallen, all of your companions should be ready to knock down those minions! And Aragorn, at a practical strength 10, should be able to help out as well.

Free Peoples (35 cards)
Ring-Bearer and Ring
The One Ring, the Ring of Rings
Galadriel, Bearer of Wisdom

Starting Fellowship-2
Aegnor, Elven Escort
Arwen, Queen of Elves and Men

Companions-5
Aragorn, Thorongil
Lorien Swordsman 4x

Allies-4
Orophin, Lorien Bowman
Rumil, Elven Protector
Calaglin, Elf of Lorien
Dinendal, Silent Scout

Events-7
Flashing Steel 2x
Seclusion 2x
Still Needed 3x

Possessions-10
Aragorn’s Bow 2x
Elven Bow 4x
Sword of the Fallen 4x

Conditions-8
Into the West 3x
Shadow Between 3x

The strategy here is just about the same as the Standard. Get your allies out, use Aegnor wisely to win skirmishes, heal up Aegnor in the regroup. Wash, rinse, repeat. You also have the very nice option of killing minions with pure archery, if you so desire.

So it looks like Aegnor really does have some use after all. But I still like to call him Figwit. So the name stays.

Hmm...good thought, but that companion’s not as good as Arwen, QOEAM.

I would drop 2x Aragorn’s Bow and add 2x Aragorn’s Bow, Ranger’s Longbow. Neat article! A little short, but it was informative and interesting. I give it a 4. Smile
