An overview on theme decks, including 9 original decklists.
--- end description ---

Introduction

Let’s face it: the Lord of the Rings TCG is a game. Why do we play games? To have fun!

One of the funnest things to do in the world of LOTR TCG is to make a theme deck. Who wouldn’t love the idea of a deck with the two couples of Faramir + Eowyn, and Aragorn, + Arwen? Or a deck with all 9 members of the fellowship? There are many possibilities for theme decks, and while they will not win every game played they are still a heck of lot more fun to play than your everyday Tier 1 deck.

What is a Theme Deck?

A good theme deck must fit these 3 requirements:

1. It must be based on circumstances found in the books/movies.
2. It does not have to be tournament-worthy (although it nevers hurts to be tournie-worthy!).
3. It must be fun!

Now, theme decks are generally only Free Peoples; after all, just about every Shadow side could be considered a “theme deck” since they pretty much fit the first requirement. Thus this article will present only Free Peoples theme decks.

Decklists

Following are the decklists of nine Free Peoples theme decks... “Nine companions to match the Nine Ringwraiths”, as Elrond would have put it. Wink

#1: Bilbo and the Dwarves
#2: The Last Alliance of Elves and MenNOLINK
#3: Flight to the Ford
#4: The Fellowship of the Ring
#5: Defender of the Little Ones
#6: The Taming of Smeagol
#7: Forth the Three HuntersNOLINK!
#8: The Stewards of Gondor
#9: A DOUBLE Wedding!

#1: Bilbo and the Dwarves

“Far over the misty mountains cold
To Dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away ere break of day
To seek the pale enchanted gold.”

Ring-bearer and Ring
Bilbo, Bearer of Things Burgled
The One Ring, Such a Weight to Carry

Fellowship (37)
Gloin, Friend to Thorin (starting)
Dain Ironfoot, King Under the Mountain (starting)
Thorin III, Stonehelm x2
A Dragon’s Tale x4
Consorting With Wizards x3
Stairs of Khazad-dum x4
Mines of Khazad-dum x2
Red Book of Westmarch
There and Back Again
Stone Trolls x2
Beneath the Mountains x4
Hand Axe x4
Baruk Khazad x4
Dwarven Axe x4

Strategy

Tales!!! Gloin gets stronger from them, Mines of Khazad-dum heals with them, Red Book of Westmarch draws cards, and A Dragon’s Tale discards them for exertions!

The main idea is to discard lots of tales each site to place tons of exertions, and then use a combination of Baruk Khazad and some Hand Axes to kill off the minions. Beneath the Mountains can replay Hand Axe if need be.

When equipped with a Hand Axe and a Dwarven Axe, Gloin becomes your main fighter at 12 strength. Stone Trolls and Stairs of Khazad-dum can add even more strength.

Use Bilbo’s regroup text to play some tales in regroup, if you’re worried about adding too much twilight.

Matchups

Corruption:
Definitely a weakness, since Bilbo only has 8 resistance. You *can* eliminate minions before the skirmish phase however, so you have a defense against corruption decks that try to corrupt during the skirmish phase (*cough* Ulaire Enquea, Thrall of the One *cough*).

Archery:
With few companions, you can’t be hit by Anduin Banks. You also have Mines of Khazad-dum for healing.

Beatdown:
Simple: how can you beat me down if I kill you before the skirmish phase? The only thing to beware of is cards like Pavise and Rider’s Gear.

Wounding:
Sauron Grind can hurt you, as can any deck abusing Orkish Lackey. But any wounding past the archery phase probably won’t affect you.

Swarm:
Wounding will eliminate several minions, but Bilbo can sometimes fall to a well-made swarm. Just try to double-move as fast as you can so that they can’t get set upNOLINK fast enough.

#2: The Last Alliance of Elves and MenNOLINK

“There were some who resistedNOLINK....”

Ring-bearer and Ring
Isildur, Bearer of Heirlooms
The One Ring, The Ring of Rings

Fellowship (33)
Anarion, Lord of Anorien (starting)
Elendil, The Tall x3
Armor of the White City x3
Spirit of the White Tree x2
King’s Legacy
Narsil, Blade of the Faithful x2
Scroll of Isildur
Sapling of the White Tree x4
Gondorian Sword x2
Rally the Company x3
Sentinels of Numenor x2
The Last Alliance of Elves and Men x3
Elrond, Herald to Gil-galad x2
Rumil, Elven Protector x2
Orophin, Lorien Bowman x2

Strategy

Elendil and his 2 sons are the only companions in this deck, but they can get very tanked up. Armor of the White City basically adds 2 strength with Isildur’s text, and with The Last Alliance of Elves and Men + a sword their strength can reach astronomical proportions. Isildur will have 11 resistance, which will protect him against corruption.

Anarion makes the 5 Gondor events extremely potent, since it will basically double the effect. Spirit of the White Tree, a very under-rated card, neutralizes Ninja Gollum, the new Orc Warg decks, and really any deck that uses skirmish events or skirmish special abilities.

For the Elven allies (necessary to add strength with The Last Alliance), Elrond gives healing while Rumil and Orophin can take out a minion or two.

Matchups

Corruption:
Isildur will have 11 resistance, so this is not a major weakness. 5 skirmish events will protect against Bound to its Fate, and Spirit of the White Tree can defend against Ulaire Enquea, Thrall of the One.

Archery:
Definitely a weakness. Your only hope is to wear The Ring of Rings and double so fast that they can’t get enough archery fast enough.

Beatdown:
Your companions will be extremely strong, and Spirit of the White Tree means that you don’t have to fear any surprise attacks from their hand (nor any attacks from skirmish special abilities!). This should be no problem.

Wounding:
Sapling of the White Tree x4 will save your companions for a good amount of time, and Elrond gives healing every turn. Add to that the fact that Elendil with Narsil has 6 vitality, so he’s not going to be easy to kill.

Swarm:
Give Narsil to Isildur and he can reach a base strength of 20. That’s not very easy to overwhelm!

#3: Flight to the Ford

“Strider can take you by paths that are seldom trodden....”

Ring-bearer and Ring
Frodo, Weary From the Journey
The One Ring, Such a Weight to Carry

Fellowship (33)
Merry, From O’er the Brandywine (starting)
Pippin, Wearer of Black and Silver (starting)
Sam, Faithful Companion (starting)
Aragorn, Wingfoot
Daddy Twofoot, Next-door Neighbor
Hobbit Sword x4
Ithilien Blade x2
Flaming Brand
Bill the Pony
No Stranger to the Shadows
There and Back Again
The Tale of the Great Ring
Dagger Strike x4
Hobbit Intuition x4
Narrow Escape x3
Pathfinder x3
Unharmed x3

Alternate Version: Include Arwen and Asfaloth, for the final dash to the ford. Or, if you prefer the books, include Glorfindel, Revealed in Wrath.

Strategy

Choke the twilight pool! Sam plays Bill the Pony at site 1, and hopefully you can get No Stranger to the Shadows on Aragorn ASAP. Aragorn himself will be pulled with The Prancing Pony. Pathfinder adds to the choking since you can play sites with cheap Shadow numbers.

Against minions that are played, you can beat them up with the many skirmish events. If you don’t kill them, play Unharmed to heal your hobbits and then play Narrow Escape to discard minions. If any minions are left after that, Wingfoot’s ability can kill them off.

Matchups

Corruption:
Frodo has 10 resistance, and you’ll choke the pool enough that they won’t be able to play too much stuff. It’s not a weakness, but it’s not really a strength since you have no burden removal.

Archery:
Use the Ring, Frodo! Add in Unharmed for massive healing, and use Daddy Twofoot to bring it back every site. This should be a fairly easy matchup, especially since everyone has 4 vitality.

Beatdown:
Lots of skirmish events are included, and with Unharmed you can heal up any wounds that get placed. Use Narrow Escape and Wingfoot’s text to get rid of minions, allowing you to double-move.

Wounding:
Utilize Unharmed as much as possible. Sauron grind will probably eventually kill you, but other wounding decks can usually be stopped.

Swarm:
Frodo can have a decent amount of strength, and 8 skirmish events will keep him strong. A 10+ minion swarm will be a problem, but against a smaller amount you’ll probably be able to live.

#4: The Fellowship of the Ring

“The Company of the Ring shall be Nine....”

Ring-bearer and Ring
Frodo, Weary From the Journey
The One Ring, The Ring of Doom

Free Peoples (35)
Merry, Rohirrim Squire (starting)
Pippin, Sworn to Service (starting)
Sam, Great Elf Warrior (starting)
Gandalf, Leader of the Company x4
Aragorn, Driven By Need x2
Boromir, Defender of Minas Tirith
Legolas, Elven Comrade x3
Gimli, Unbidden Guest x2
Trust Me As You Once Did x4
Let Us Not Tarry x4
Strength of Spirit x4
Farewell to Lorien x4
Stern Words x4

Strategy

Play Boromir with The Prancing Pony, and get Gandalf in play as soon as possible. With him out, you’ll be able to use Trust Me As You Once Did and Let Us Not Tarry to turn minions into mincemeat. Add in Stern Words x4 for strength to your entire fellowship.

Matchups

Corruption:
This can be a problem. They’ll have tons of twilight to work with, and with no burden removal you can very easily be screwed, pwned, or quite possibly shafted.

Archery:
Spread out the archery wounds as much as possible, and use Farewell to Lorien to heal 9 wounds (or 36 if you play 4 copies of it). Just watch out for a mega-archery bomb at Anduin Banks.

Beatdown:
This can be a problem early, but once you get set upNOLINK with Stern Words and Trust Me As You Once Did you’ll be able to beat up their minions.

Wounding:
Ulaire Enquea, Lieutenant of Morgul. Greed. Both of those two cards will kill you, so you’ll just have to hope that your opponent isn’t expecting 6+ companions.

Swarm:
With 9 companions and lots of strength boosts, there is no possible way that swarm can affect the fellowship.

#5: Defender of the Little Ones

“Then Boromir had come leaping through the trees....”

Ring-bearer and Ring
Frodo, Weary From the Journey
The One Ring, Such a Weight to Carry

Fellowship (33)
Merry, Friend to Sam (starting)
Pippin, Wearer of Black and Silver (starting)
Boromir, Destined Guide (starting)
Blade of Gondor, Sword of Boromir x3
Flaming Brand
Hobbit Sword x4
Bow of Minas Tirith
Ranger’s Cloak
Armor of the White City
Athelas x2
Kingsfoil x2
Spirit of the White Tree x2
Strength in My Blood x4
Dagger Strike x4
Pledge of Loyalty x4
The Tale of the Great Ring

Strategy

Pump Boromir up with conditions and possessions. Blade of Gondor, Sword of Boromir allows Boromir to fight multiple times, and with Spirit of the White Tree your opponent won’t be able to retaliate.

If Frodo has to fight, he will still have up to 9 strength. In addition, The Tale of the Great Ring can prevent an overwhelming and Dagger Strike can boost his strength.

Matchups

Corruption:
You have defense against Bound to its Fate with the 8 events in the deck, and Spirit of the White Tree saves you from skirmish-phase corrupting.

Archery:
Pippin can soak up 3 wounds each turn, but beyond that you’ll be hurt. A lot.

Beatdown:
Boromir will beat up the minions they play. Spirit of the White Tree makes sure that Boromir doesn’t fall to any nasty skirmish tricks, like Red Wrath or They Stole It.

Wounding:
Pre-skirmish wounding, if it kills Boromir, can screw your deck.

Swarm:
Frodo will fall rather fast.

#6: The Taming of Smeagol

“You will lead us to the Black Gate....”

Ring-bearer and Ring
Frodo, Weary From the Journey
The One Ring, Such a Weight to Carry

Fellowship (30)
Sam, Great Elf Warrior (starting)
Smeagol, Pitiable Guide (starting)
Sting, Weapon of Heritage
Hobbit Sword x2
A Promise x4
Herbs and Stewed Rabbit x4
Nice Fish x2
There’s Another Way x4
Swear By The Precious x4
Naked Waste x4
Don’t Follow The Lights x3’

Alternate Version: There is an extra 2 twilight available in the starting fellowship, but due to the theme of the deck it cannot be used. If you don’t mind altering the theme a tad, add in Bilbo, Aged Ring-bearer; he’d make the deck very powerful.

When fully tanked up with conditions and possessions, all 3 companions will have a strength of 11. Naked Waste adds more strength, while Don’t Follow the Lights gets rid of any annoying minion. Swear by the Precious is one of the best events in the game, especially against multiple minions. It’s just killer, especially in multiples, and you can even get it back with Smeagol’s text.

Smeagol’s “exert for +2 strength” is amazing in this deck, since all 3 companions are Ring-bound. After Smeagol wins, Nice Fish provides healing for the entire fellowship.

Matchups

Corruption:
Sting, Weapon of Heritage can play on Sam to remove burdens. Just don’t use Don’t Follow the Lights unless it would prevent several burdens from being added (by, say, Ulaire Enquea, Thrall of the One).

Archery:
Choke will help here. Just double-move fast, and don’t allow them to get a great hand full of archery events and conditions.

Beatdown:
Smeagol beats a smaller minion, uses Don’t Follow the Lights to discard the biggest one. And this is after the Shadow player makes every minion strength -2 to prevent his biggest minion from being discarded by Swear by the Precious.

Wounding:
Orkish Lackey fails to do anything, since he can target only unbound companions. Sauron grind has a field day.

Swarm:
The Ring-bearer is amazingly strong and is helped by Swear by the Precious + Don’t Follow the Lights. No problem here.

#7: Forth the Three HuntersNOLINK!

“Let’s hunt some orc!”

Ring-bearer and Ring
Gimli, Bearer of Grudges
The One Ring, The Ring of Rings

Free Peoples (30)
Legolas, Greenleaf (starting)
Merry, Swordthain (starting)
Pippin, Wearer of Black and Silver (starting)
Aragorn, Thorongil
Aragorn’s Bow x2
Shadowplay x4
Quick As May Be x4
Unheeded x4
Might of Numenor x4
Hand Axe x3
Ring of Guile
Gimli’s Battle Axe, Trusted Weapon
Anduril, Sword That Was Broken x2
Spirit of the White Tree

Strategy

Pull Aragorn with The Prancing Pony, and your entire fellowship will be in play. The rest of the strategy really focuses on exerting and wounding. Shadowplay combos amazingly with the bouncing Hobbits, and comboed with Unheeded you can even get rid of a minion before it can trigger its “When you play this minion” text. With Aragorn’s Bow and Gimli’s Battle Axe, Trusted Weapon, you’ll have a base archery of 3.

Might of Numenor provides healing for your companions. If anything gets past the archery phase, it’ll have to fight against a 12 strength Aragorn; and with Spirit of the White Tree, who cares if they have skirmish events or skirmish special abilities!

Matchups

Corruption:
Gimli can have 9 resistance, and you will probably be able to kill minions early enough to prevent them from adding burdens. 12 events are included in the deck, so Bound to its Fate won’t hurt you.

Archery:
Absolutely nothing to it. Merry and Pippin can soak up a combined 6 wounds per turn, and Quick as May Be can kill off archers before they add to the archery total.

Beatdown:
The minions won’t last till the skirmish phase to beat your companions. As with all archery decks, your only worries are wound-prevention cards; thus Spirit of the White Tree is included as a last defense in the skirmish phase.

Wounding:
I’m wounding you, you’re wounding me. It’s all about who gets set upNOLINK faster.

Swarm:
Aragorn’s Bow and Legolas, Greenleaf both pick off lots of minions. Anyone who gets to Gimli has to face an 11 strength Ring-bearer.

#8: The Stewards of Gondor

“Boromir was my brother.”

Ring-bearer and Ring
Boromir, Bearer of Council
The One Ring, The Ring of Rings

Free Peoples (35)
Denethor, Last Ruling Steward (starting)
Faramir, Prince of Ithilien (starting)
Brego, Loyal Steed x3
Ithilien Blade x3
Bow of Minas Tirith x3
Athelas x3
Armor x3
Ranger’s Cloak x3
Kingsfoil x3
Noble Leaders x2
Houses of Healing x2
Heirs of Gondor
Stewards’ Legacy
Guarded City x3
Defend It and Hope x3

Strategy

Take a good look at Denethor’s ability. With all these Gondor possessions, you’ll be able to exhaust many minions, and then finish them off with Defend It and Hope or Brego, Loyal Steed.

Noble Leaders and Heirs of Gondor provide much strength, and with Guarded City you’ll be drowning in tokens. If you’re facing a deck that piles wounds on you, use Guarded City with Houses of Healing for some mega-healing capabilities.

Matchups

Corruption:
With only 8 resistance, Boromir can fall to the powers of corruption. He’ll live long enough to give your Shadow side a fair shot at winning the game for you.

Archery:
If the archers are killed in maneuver, how can they add to the archery total?

Beatdown:
Kill any minions you can, and beat the rest with Noble Leaders or Heirs of Gondor.

Wounding:
Houses of Healing will be extremely helpful, but if they save up a bomb to kill at one site then you could be in trouble.

Swarm:
It’ll be harder to kill minions, so just load up Heirs of Gondor / Noble Leaders with lots of tokens and watch Boromir beat up on minions.

#9: A DOUBLE Wedding!

“And Aragorn the King Elessar wedded Arwen Undomial....”
---
“Yet I will wed with the White Lady of Rohan....”

Ring-bearer and Ring
Faramir, Bearer of Quality
The One Ring, The Ring of Rings

Free Peoples (32)
Eowyn, Lady of Ithilien (starting)
Arwen, Queen of Elves and Men (starting)
Aragorn, Thorongil
Rohirrim Doorwarden
Anduril, Sword That Was Broken
Aragorn’s Bow x2
Athelas x2
Faramir’s Sword
Faramir’s Bow x2
Hadafang
Elven Bow x2
Eowyn’s Sword, Dernhelm’s Blade
Riddermark Javelin
Brego
Coif
Hardy Garrison
Hearts Raised x4
Might of Numenor x4
Stand to Arms x4

Pull Thorongil with The Prancing Pony and load everyone up with gear. You’ll be dumping tons of wounds and exertions on their fellowship, and with the game text of Eowyn and Arwen you won’t mind if any minions live till the skirmish phase.

Stand to Arms is an extremely undercosted event when combined with Faramir’s game text; just wound Faramir to make a minion roaming, and then discard 2 cards from hand to wound a minion twice.

With all these possessions, Rohirrim Doorwarden is a major boost to whoever you want to pump up. If you transfer him to Aragorn, Thorongil then it becomes very easy to use Aragorn’s maneuver ability, since he will almost definitely have more strength than the minion he exerts.

Matchups

Corruption:
Enduring Nazzies will have a tough time hurting you, but other forms of corruption may find ways to beat you.

Archery:
Might of Numenor and Athelas provide some healing, but you could fall victim to a concentrated attack over several sites.

Beatdown:
Wound the minions either before the skirmish phase, or during the skirmish phase. There’s not really any way for the Shadow player to stop you.

Wounding:
Might of Numenor provides some nice defense against pre-skirmish wounding, but it’ll only be a matter of time before a companion dies. Just try and race to site 9 before they get a combo set upNOLINK.

Swarm:
With this much wounding, swarm can’t touch you.

More Theme Deck Ideas

These 9 decklists are by no means the only possible theme decks you can make; rather, they are meant to be used as either A) the basis for your new deck or B) a way to spark your creative imagination. You can tweak these decklists to suit your needs, or come up with a new, fun idea for a theme deck.

Here are some more ideas for theme decks:

1. Northern Rangers

Use Aragorn, Ranger of the North, Halbarad, Ranger of the North, and the Watcher at Sarn Ford, Ranger of the North, for a very northern fellowship. Add in the condition Ranger of the North for more fun!

2: Faramir’s Posse

Use Faramir and his many Ring-bound Ranger friends to keep Frodo and Sam safe on their journey through Ithilien.

3: Rohirrim Bloodlines

Theoden and his son Theodred can combine for a triple-moving fellowship. Throw in Theoden’s nephew and niece (Eomer and Eowyn) for extra fun.

4: The Battle of Helm’s Deep

Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli join the Rohirrim warriors to defend Helm’s Deep. If you want to go by the movies, throw in Haldir and his friends; but for me and any other people who liked the book version better, leave out those pointy-eared archers.

5: The Battle of Minas Tirith

Gandalf and Pippin ride to Minas Tirith in order to save the Gondorian fortress of Minas Tirith.

Conclusion

Playing a theme deck is always enjoyable to both yourself and your opponent. It can be refreshing to see a fun, original deck for once rather than the blandness of Elvents, Power Dwarves, or Noble Leaders; I mean, don’t you just get tired of facing the same old powerful decks every game? Creative deck-building is something that seems to have been left by the wayside in these days of powerful auto-win/basically-an-auto-win decks.

Thanks for reading!

your flight to the ford deck would be cool if it included the FOTR ranger arwen.

shouldn’t the stewards of gondor have stewards legacy?

Spammers really are amazing creatures. You can learn all there is to know about their ways in a month. And yet, after a hundred years, they can still surprise you. Razz

I think Aragorn, Driven By Need might be better for your #4: The Fellowship of the Ring deck than RotN, since you’ve already got Merry and Pippin working with threats. Also, why did you start your #6: The Taming of Smeagol fellowship with 2 extra twilight left over? I would think you’d want to throw SOMETHING in there...at least Pippin, Hobbit of Some Intelligence to remove the burden added by Smeagol.

A very nice article, though. I’ll hold off on voting until you finalize it. Smile

Check out Lasting Alliances, The Road Ahead, and Ages of Middle-earth, three of my five dream card sets that make up Wars of the Ring. Oh, and I have a trade list now!

Also, if you're into DCs or RPGs (or even if you're not!), check out Realms of Middle-earth, the sequel to CG's "DC Adventure", Realms of the North!

Your Table of Contents links aren’t working properly.

And with the three hunters, why not just do a three hunters deck? Even a TT style one.

Nice article AC! Thumbs Up You might want to unlink the links that shouldn’t be linking though, like Set Up and Some Who Resisted. I think I’ll try a version of the Flight to the Ford deck.

Probably a 5, though I’ll wait to see if you update it with new stuff.

Fixed. I had sped through the table of contents a bit too fast. Embarassed

Because the Three Hunters were, after all, trying to recover Merry and Pippin. And I figured that there are enough of the Aragorn-Legolas-Gimli decks floating around, and that there ought to be a good, solid deck that was truer to the story.

Done. That auto-linking thing can be a pain sometimes! Wink (although it is really quite helpful in so many instances, it just can backfire sometimes. Smile)
