Let’s have some more events then.
This first one is inspired from the title: using companions’ strengths against them.
Voices of Death
Event • Skirmish
Spot a companion with enduring X, bloodlust X or damage +X to make a Nazgul they are skirmishing strength +X. Then, if that companion bears an artifact, make that Nazgul gain that keyword until the regroup phase.
This is part of a huge cycle of legendary events (which remember go straight to the dead pile when played, though this does not prevent them from being played again because they are unique, but does stop recursion). It was kind of a play on words; the Numenoreans considered the ’Doom of Men’ to be death, but this card is partly suggesting the doom of men is their wealth, and also to become the Nazgul who are undying.
The Doom of Men
Event • Skirmish
Legendary.
Make a companion skirmishing a Nazgul strength -3 for each artifact borne by characters in that skirmish.
I thought it was clever, anyway.

I like it very much.

This card needs some balance definitely. A huge (er) twilight cost doesn’t always justify an overpowered card. |

Oof, i likey. Unorthodox but cool.

The Doom of Men is also a name for isildurs bane. It was mentioned at the council of elrond in the FOTR film when frodo reveals the ring. Ouchy too hard me thinks even with a limit its sickeningly good. Maybe its balanced id have see it in play as it has be against the right deck i suppose, though in block play this is death as you made shed loads of artifacts. Why no legendary cost?

Very good point!

The reason I thought it was fine was because of Final Triumph. Both are cost events which effectively say ’Kill a companion’.

Because it’s an event and can’t be discarded from play.
Thanks for all you guys’ reviews!

Since I’m late to this party, I’ll just chip in my thought for the controversial one....
Thranduil wrote: The Doom of Men

As other have said, at the very least, this needs a limit.
I have a suggestion that might work, though....
[X] The Doom of Men
Event • Skirmish
Legendary.
X is the number of artifacts you can spot (limit ).
Make a companion skirmishing a Nazgul strength -1 for each artifact you can spot. Limit -5.
NOW this card might actually work, because it gets more and more expensive with more artifacts. For both that and the effect, though, you’re limited to a perfectly reasonable 5.
I dunno. Probably UP now. Maybe something like this would be better:
The Doom of Men
Event • Skirmish
Legendary.
Make a companion skirmishing a Nazgul strength -2 for each artifact borne by each character in that skirmish.
Not nearly as flashy, of course, but still plenty powerful with all the artifacts you have running around. |

Thanks for the great thoughts DI, but I’m still not seeing what makes Doom of Men so much more powerful than Final Triumph. In the right deck, both cost and both kill a companion, and you can’t recur this one because it goes straight to the dead pile.

The biggest problem--the thing that immediately screams BROKEN!--is that there’s no limit...this in a block that has an ungodly number of artifacts. With artifacts now little different than possessions, you could easily use this to reduce even a strong companion’s strength down to Hobbit levels and overwhelm with even the weakest of Nazgul. It’s just not fair. That’s the price you pay for having so many artifacts now, my friend.
I don’t understand the comparison to Final Triumph. Yes, Uruks tend to have decent vitality, but you still have to be able to wound a companion a time or two AND keep your Uruk healthy AND hope the FP doesn’t have some form of healing to make it work. And the FP player can always assign Uruks with high vitality to companions with ridiculous vitality (like Aragorn with Anduril) if they think you might have that trick up your sleeve. Or they can use direct wounding to level the field a bit. Or still make use of any card that prevents overwhelming. Here, there are no outs aside from not playing artifacts and hoping the Shadow player doesn’t have enough to make this as deadly as it could be. After all, the rings you can play on companions are artifacts, aren’t they? Those stay in play, so getting enough out in time...scary.
Add a limit, and it’d be mostly okay, albeit still pretty powerful. |

I like the idea of it being based on the number of artifacts borne by characters involved in the skirmish. That way a limit isn’t needed yet it can still be pumped up by playing rings and things on your Nazgul.
-1 per artifact just seems a bit much.
