It doesn't say "If a Free Peoples or Shadow player exerts a minion" because that would be superfluous wording.

A minion is exerting, therefore Unheeded works.

Yes, Shadowplay can trigger Unheeded. Unheeded says, "If a minion exerts..." It does not specify the source of the exertion.

Ok, so my cousins do something similar.

Start with Sam and Bilbo, and get a few more hobbits in there to power sam up. This way, you don't need to draw both bilbo and consorting with Wizards. Also, get the Great Ring, since that works really well with Bilbo

Also, if you get a few more Shire Tales in there, than you may want to switch to Pippin, Steadfast Friend.

Lastly, Sting, Weapon of Heritage, one of the Mithrial Coats, and Salt of the Shire will help.
