Title: Destined Guide Tank
Post by: Thranduil on August 18, 2008, 05:13:42 PM
After drafting with Age's End cards and pulling Sword of Boromir, a thought came to me about a fun deck! And here it is!

30 cards
Frodo, Protected By Many
Merry, Loyal Companion (Starting)
Pippin, Wearer of Black and Silver (Starting)
Boromir, Destined Guide (Starting)
Aragorn, Swift Hunter
Hobbit Sword
Blade of Gondor, Sword of Boromir x2
Ranger’s Cloak
Bow of Minas Tirith
Shield of the White Tree
Armor of the Citadel
Kingsfoil x3
Spirit of the White Tree
Strength In My Blood x4
Not Bound To His Fate x4
Heirs of Gondor x2
Guarded City x3
Last Throw x2

Basic principle:

Bid to go first with the Prancing Pony and pull Aragorn first thing (I'm using Swift Hunter for no particular reason other than he's strength 9 and has an inbuilt pump so seemed a reasonable choice). Then every turn play almost every possession and condition in your hand on Boromir, play Heirs of Gondor and reinforce ludicrous tokens with Guarded City. Once you have the Blade of Gondor out, Boromir should hit strength 18 damage +5 with all his stuff (defender +1 as well) and you can discard any card he bears to fight almost every minion (and presumably win) thereby transferring all the Not Bound By His Fate to Aragorn so that it doesn't bounce to your hand. Use Heirs of Gondor to really kill everything then play Last Throw to run to the end! If you feel like it, you can even send Boromir to fight a minion assigned to WoBaS, use Ranger's Cloak to make that minion roaming and bounce Pippin to kill it! And if they try and Red Wrath Boromir to death, you have Spirit of the White Tree.

Not sure how good it is (having just made it and not tested it), but it sounds entertaining! Any good thoughts? I was wondering about having more unbound Hobbits or I Will Go or Guardian so that Boromir can fight even more minions but decided that a slimmer deck was perhaps better.

Thanks.

Swift Hunter is a terrible choice since he is the only hunter.

Swift Hunter is a terrible choice since he is the only hunter.
But he can use his pump on himself. Any better suggestions for an Aragorn (bearing in mind that I obviously don't have Thorongil)?

Aragorn, Well-traveled Guide? Obviously his text shouldn't trigger, but if something goes horribly wrong it might be a decent backup plan, especially since he can bear Strength in my Blood.

Probably your best Aragorn options in Standard would be Isildur's Heir or, even better, Elessar Telcontar...but neither of them are rangers, so they'd nix pulling him with The Prancing Pony. #-o

If you took it into Expanded, Wingfoot would be awesome.

Another option would be to forget about Not Bound To His Fate and go with a different ranger, like Wizard's Pupil (who would pair nicely with the Hobbits in case things go to pot) or a healing option like Captain of Ithilien, Halbarad, or Damrod DoG.

One suggestion I'd make regardless of what you end up going with is to toss in The Great Horn (another free possession for Boromir) and then perhaps a copy or two of Faramir's Company and/or Elendil's Army, who could be used for their pumps and/or healing but tossed with the Horn at the opportune moment.

Telcontar is great because he can turn Pip into a healing engine. Well-Traveled Guide isn't a bad idea either, since he can bear Strength in My Blood... also, you could always kill Boromir, Merry, and Pippin to really throw your opponent off! [/joke] But I'd seriously love to see someone do that.

Consider using the Faramir R-B, he makes Pip a lot more useful.
