Fellowship / Re: Ally Deck

Welcome back! :)

In a card, you want a Horn of Boromir deck. Boromir, Defender of Minas Tirith stays in top shape while your allies do all the fighting. There are two basic takes on this. The first is to use Galadriel, Lady of Light to play a bunch of Elves for free and then Boromir calls them in to fight. They may add to the archery total and often don't even have to die. Celeborn, Lord of Lorien is 9 strength and gets healed for free every turn thanks to Galadriel. Elrond gets up to 11, 14 if you use the horn on him twice. Elrond, Lord of Rivendell is a fine choice, but Herald to Gil-galad will heal himself twice every turn or heal Boromir for a double. The Elven approach also opens up a whole host of Elven support tools: Secret Sentinels, Foul Creation, Curse Their Foul Feet, Hosts of the Last Alliance, The Last Alliance of Elves and Men. Don't try to fit all of these in the deck, of course, but you've got directions you can take it depending on what you face.

I actually can't quickly find a list for a "Horn of Boromir deck" that fits this bill. The reason is simple, a deck that does all this is only a few cards away from being a type of Last Alliance deck anyway and that deck doesn't fall apart when Boromir dies. There are 5 Last Alliance decks here which include Horn of Boromir to various degrees, you can reorient one of them around Boromir I'm sure: https://lotrtcgwiki.com/forums/index.php?topic=12180.msg99411#msg99411

The other basic take isn't quite as obvious. Instead of calling Elves in to fight, call Hobbits in to die. It can be very effective though, Green Hill Country plays all your allies for free and because you're obviously including Hobbit Farmer you can get the effect even when you don't start. Your Hobbit allies have some nice perks, namely you can funnel all your Hobbit Party Guest exertions into Bilbo to remove twilight via Consorting with Wizards. Three Monstrous Trolls is the only way to keep Moria from adding more twilight than they started with, too. Silinde can be interesting with Frodo's Bedroom, it's better than Rivendell Valley because you can't combine that one with Galadriel's discount (since they're both phase actions you have to pick one). Hobbits can be both free and net you a card, which isn't altogether different from Elrond and Ottar, Man of Laketown but it's kinda cute. This decklist shows the concept fairly well: https://lotrtcgwiki.com/forums/index.php?topic=11507.msg95214#msg95214

Note that Such a Little Thing was basically made to prevent this sort of deck from ruining Moria. You'll probably want backup possessions to sacrifice. Also, Saruman, Servant of the Eye will assign Boromir anyway, so make sure that he won't just die if this has to happen. Skirmishing with your companions as little as possible will only get you so far in the end. As the Last Alliance decklists show, if you focus a little less on Boromir you still end up with a solid deck with the upside that it won't crumble when any one specific companion dies. Here's a good example I found with that take, notice how it essentially uses companions as "super allies" as well -- they're all expendable: https://lotrtcgwiki.com/forums/index.php?topic=8486.msg83392#msg83392

Been along time again since I was up here Sorry if this question is not in the right spot and also not under the page guys have set up for me to ask questions, as I use to ask a lot of questions at one time.

Anyway Has anybody built any decks primarily around a whole mess of Allies, maybe only one or two regular companions besides the ring-bearer of course and the rest in allies, letting the allies do most of the work through various cards. And of course most of the reason behind that is so you do not give your opponent so much twilight all the time?

I like the idea of DaD, but I don't know if it would be worth it. I'll have to experiment some with him.

Gil-Galad can actually be dealt with fairly easily. Most HKOTN decks take until 5 or 6 to set up their loops, so if they go above 6 or if they add a bunch of burdens to tank archery, Shotgun Enquea can team up with Mumak Commander to kill him.

I love the addition of Too Great and Terrible. Powerful Guide is way too overbearing in my opinion. You'll still struggle to Gil Galad, but almost everyone does, I guess.

Have you considered one Gollum, Dark as Darkness? I appreciate you'll usually be exerting for the fens, but would the flexibility be worth more than an extra Her Sneak?

This is a neat deck I've been working on for a few months. It is currently at the strongest it's ever been at, but it probably could get better. This is actually a far-removed iteration from the last one I had in another post.

Ring-bearer: Frodo, Resolute Hobbit
Ring: The One Ring, The Great Ring

Adventure deck:
Anduin Banks
Neekerbreekers' Bog
Doorway to Doom
Steward's Tomb
Mithlond
Caras Galadhon
Dammed Gate-stream
Imladris
Mount Doom

Free Peoples Draw Deck:
1x Smeagol, Always Helps
1x Aldred, Eored Soldier
1x Aragorn, Defender of Rohan
1x Gamling, Defender of the Hornburg
1x Hama, Captain of the King's Guard
1x Éomer, Horsemaster
1x Éowyn, Lady of Ithilien
1x Merry, Swordthain
1x Aldor, Soldier of Edoras
1x Ecglaf, Courageous Farmer
1x Guma, Plains Farmer
1x Leowyn
1x Rohirrim Herdsman
1x Weland, Smith of the Riddermark
1x Aragorn's Bow, Ranger's Longbow
1x Brego
1x Coif
1x Eomer's Spear, Trusty Weapon
1x Erkenbrand's Horn
1x Firefoot
1x Horse of Great Stature
3x Merry's Sword
1x Rider's Mount
2x Rider's Spear
1x Spear of the Mark
1x Sting, Elven Long Knife
1x Throne of the Golden Hall
1x Phial of Galadriel, The Light of Earendil
4x Something Slimy
4x Last Days of My House
4x Simbelmyne
1x Don't Look at Them
1x Follow Smeagol
1x Gladden Homestead
4x There's Another Way
1x Fortress Never Fallen
1x Weapon Store
1x A Light in His Mind
3x Home and Hearth
4x Deagol, Fateful Finder
1x Rohirrim Doorwarden
1x Robin Smallburrow, Shirriff #$&*@!-Robin

Shadow Draw Deck:
2x Gollum, Her Sneak
1x Gollum, Old Villain
4x Archer of Harad
1x Ferocious Haradrim
2x Mumak Commander, Giant Among the Swertings
4x Mumak Rider
4x Southron Murderer
2x The Mouth of Sauron, Messenger of Mordor
1x Gothmog, Morgul Leader
2x Southron Leader
2x Morgul Squealer
2x Úlairë Enquëa, Lieutenant of Morgul
1x Úlairë Nelya, Third of the Nine Riders
1x Úlairë Toldëa, Black Shadow
1x Web
2x Pavise
1x Ships of Great Draught
4x Captured by the Ring
2x Led Astray
4x Sudden Strike
3x Elevated Fire
2x Too Great and Terrible
4x Evil-smelling Fens
2x Countless Companies
4x Howdah
3x Rapid Reload
1x Saruman, Servant of Sauron

Use Simbelmyne, Last Days of my House, Something Slimy, and Deagol to get important stuff out fast. Abuse Home and Hearth for burden removal, Ecglaf and Weapon Store will make sure Merry's Sword stays on the table. If possible, get Aragorn's Bow, RL on him fast and abuse it with ELK. If you're ever at a dwelling, a few Home and Hearth help with that. Use Dispatched with haste in conjunction with your various possession recursion tools to cream corsairs. Hama can help with that too, and is key against Evil Man Possessions.

The shadow is a new and improved version of an Evil Man archery deck that uses Gollum and Sudden Strike to make kills easier. Enquea is in there for easy direct wounds, with the Great Ring being popular, people often use it to convert archery wounds to burdens. Mouth of Sauron comes out to play a lot more often, making Rapid Reload perpetually a problem. Toldea can help handle Gandalf with TGAT, and Nelya can swap your sites. Gothmog is three cheap archery, and the Captured by the Ring add threats to capitalize on.

Things to potentially add:

Lemenya, ET and Cantea, FTW. These two could toss possessions and add threats for when a companion gets killed.

Shelob? This could help zero in on companions for a kill, or just deny a Grimbeorn. Gothmog, ML could make her a monster as well.

More burden removal options for the freeps. Early on a corruption deck can do some damage, and even with the 12 resistance Frodo, it can be tough. Plus recurring Merry's sword constantly is a pain.

Anduril over Bow? The bow is working ok. Might drop it for the OG bow or Anduril FOTW.

The Golden Hall / Re: Announcing VKIT: A tool for producing printable PDFs
« Last post by Phallen Cassidy on February 12, 2024, 08:44:29 AM »
Eventually has arrived! This wound up A LOT more complicated than I remembered, you have to negotiate between 3 data sources before you even get to the programming part I mentioned to format the decklist properly. What's worse, Excel is super localized so I can't just write one formula for everyone to use -- if your system language is German or French or even English (United Kingdom) you will have to make some changes. So first I'll say what we're going to do and then I'll get into how to do it. You may need to figure out some workarounds for the "how" depending on your setup.

Basically, we're tricking the deck importer into adding what we want it to add. Go to VKIT and filter down until you have a single card. I filter for 000 to bring up the card back. Right click on it and select the last option, "Inspect". This brings you to the computer instructions to generate the page you're looking at, highlighting the spot for the card. When you click Add in VKIT, the program checks this spot and recreates all highlighted options to the right so they can be put on a PDF. Right-click on that and pick "edit as HTML." Now you can change the code. Perhaps you can see where we're going with this: if we had an entire decklist here instead of just one card, the program could move that over to the right all at once.  The part in quotes after "value=" is what will be added to the right and where the text is repeated is what shows on the left.

We have our goal. All we need is a decklist formatted to look like the options VKIT wants to see, then we can paste it over the code for the single card on the right. We immediately run into our first problem: VKIT uses card ID rather than just title, so you'll need some source for the IDs.

Kralik posted the spreadsheet that was the basis of the wiki here: http://lotrtcgwiki.com/files/CardData.xls
If you download it we'll have something that mostly lines up with VKIT. There are some typos or differences, 5 or fewer, Speak “Friend” and Enter for example uses different quotation marks between the two. Easily overcome. That's between the VKIT and the spreadsheet though. But we want to go from Gemp to the VKIT, meaning Gemp to spreadsheet to VKIT, which unfortunately means we're not done with data inconsistencies. The Nazgul names famously won't link on the forums because Gemp uses accents while the forums (and the VKIT) do not. Úlairë Enquëa, Lieutenant of Morgul comes up empty, we need Ulaire Enquea, Lieutenant of Morgul. Case matters, too. Lieutenant Of Morgul will not work for VKIT.

I'm going to solve this in Excel. This wound up being a problem because Excel is a very casual kind of program translated into dozens of languages. What I have here may not work for you if the formula names in all caps have to be translated to your system language. You'll also probably need to replace all commas with semicolons, I think only Excel for United States uses commas. I've still got the instructions below, but it'll be up to the individual to translate this into whatever language necessary. Here's what appeared to be a useful resource on the matter: https://edu.gcfglobal.org/en/excel-tips/understanding-regional-differences-in-excel/1/
You could also get around the regional differences by changing Excel to use English (United States). As with everything about this sort of thing, else I don't know what other issues that might cause (especially if you use Excel yourself) and I can't help with it.

With that out of the way, let's get started. Paste your decklist into the spreadsheet at cell T1 (technically you can put it anywhere, but the formulas below expect it to be here). In column U we're going to strip out all the non-English characters in card titles from Gemp so we can match them to titles in the spreadsheet. Here's that formula:
Quote from: Put this in U1
=SUBSTITUTE(SUBSTITUTE(SUBSTITUTE(SUBSTITUTE(SUBSTITUTE(LOWER(T1),"ú","u"),"û","u"),"ë","e"),"é","e"),"ó","o")
If nothing happens, change the formatting at the top from "Text" to "General" then click on the cell and press enter again. If it gives you an error and you're not in the US, you'll need to translate the formula names in all caps and change all the commas to semicolons. Remove the "=" at the start and do find-and-replace to fix these regional issues. Sorry to say I'll be of minimal help here, if you overcome any problems leave a message for future generations. I'm pretty sure it'll work in all versions of Excel, and I'd like to believe that OpenOffice or something similar will let you use Excel formula names? If anyone is using OpenOffice and has trouble let me know and I'll rewrite the formula to be in that syntax.

First problem is solved, we have a way to get from the Gemp title to the card ID. Now we need to have them formatted properly. Remember, <option value="ID_### - Card Name"><\option> is all we need. The formula to format our card names is this:
Quote from: Put this in V1
="<option value="""&LEFT(RIGHT(INDEX($C$2:$C$3497,MATCH(IF(LEFT(U1,4)="Ring",RIGHT(U1,LEN(U1)-SEARCH(":",U1)-1),IFERROR(RIGHT(U1,LEN(U1)-SEARCH("x ",U1)-1),U1)),$A$2:$A$3497,0)),5),2)&"_"&RIGHT(INDEX($C$2:$C$3497,MATCH(IF(LEFT(U1,4)="Ring",RIGHT(U1,LEN(U1)-SEARCH(":",U1)-1),IFERROR(RIGHT(U1,LEN(U1)-SEARCH("x ",U1)-1),U1)),$A$2:$A$3497,0)),3)&" - "&INDEX($A$2:$A$3497,MATCH(IF(LEFT(U1,4)="Ring",RIGHT(U1,LEN(U1)-SEARCH(":",U1)-1),IFERROR(RIGHT(U1,LEN(U1)-SEARCH("x ",U1)-1),U1)),$A$2:$A$3497,0))&""">"&U1&"</option>"
Then copy the formula fields in U1 and V1 down to the length of your decklist in column T. Hopefully (barring any regional differences in Excel formulas) we have a list.

Our final problem is now upon us: decklists consolidate duplicate copies while VKIT lists them all individually. The simplest way is to paste in your decklist with single lines for every card, then paste in any cards with 2x or more, then 3x or more, then finally any 4x copies. VKIT does helpfully group cards by title so the finished product will look right. But that means pasting your decklist 4 times and we can improve on that without much effort. Put a 1 in W1 and put this formula below it:
Quote from: Put this in W2
=IF(ISNA(V2),W1,W1+IFERROR(NUMBERVALUE(LEFT(T2)),1))

Then put a 1 in Y1 and this formula below that:
Quote from: Put this in Y2
=Y1+1

Drag W2 down to the length of your decklist and Y2 down until it's as least as many as the last number in W (I would just go to 200 or something, enough for all the cards in any of your decks). And now to reap the fruits of your labors:
Quote from: Put this in Z1
=INDEX(V:V,MATCH(Y1,W:W,1)+1)

Carry it down and you've got your full decklist formatted for VKIT. Finally, we're ready to make our decklist into a PDF. Copy all the non-N/A cells in column Z, go back to VKIT, filter for a card, right-click > inspect, right click > edit as HTML, paste. Click somewhere else in the inspect dialog box and watch as that one card you don't care about turns into all the cards that you do. Click on the first entry, hold shift, then scroll down and click on the last entry to select them all. Then "Add". BAM. Generate your decklist.

WARNING: the VKIT is definitely not meant to do this. Like I said, we're tricking it into doing what we want. I tried to do 10 decks at once and crashed my entire computer so... I don't recommend trying to add a ton of cards all at once. I would bet that you can still put them all on one PDF by clicking "Add" on just one of them at a time, but do this at your own risk.

Whew! Yeah, I forgot about the title mismatches between Gemp and the spreadsheet and VKIT. But once you do all the above steps, you save your spreadsheet and all the setup is finished. Then you can cut and paste everything to a new tab, clean it up a bit, whatever you want. I expect that ketura, seeing the steps all laid out, will soon update VKIT to just load a decklist and render all of these instructions unnecessary. But in a way that means the instructions have done their job: a user can convert a decklist to a PDF :P
