Orc Ambusher and Travelled Leader
« on: February 22, 2018, 12:22:19 PM »
Hi all!
I was wondering. If I play Traveled Leader in the Maneuver Phase, can Orc Ambusher exert to prevent it (as it is also a regroup event)?
I guess a similar question is whether I can play Arrows Thick in the Air in the archery phase when Saruman's Snows is out?
Thoughts?

I was wondering about a similar issue the other day: Can Gil-Galad, HKotN get back Sword-Wall with his game text?

I suppose I'd argue yes? It seems odd to argue that Traveled Leader isn't a regroup event just because it's being played during maneuver...

But by that logic, AtitA would be no right? Because it's a skirmish event.

From the Comprehensive Rules:

Quote from: Comprehensive Rules 4.0

phase action

If a phase action can be played in multiple phases (for example, "Maneuver or Skirmish:"), its action type is of the phase during which the action is taken.

Which, in my opinion, happily supports intuition. It's effectively an event with two actions on it, one for the maneuver phase and one for the skirmish phase (as We Must Have It shows more explicitly with two different actions). The ability to play it in another phase is irrelevant.

Perfect! Can't argue with that. Thanks!

I might be hijacking this thread a little, but how would you apply this to Gil-Galad, since he is taking the card into hand rather than playing it?

Gil-galad‘s errata lets him take an Elven skirmish event into hand. Not any event. So Sword Wall is a good question. And I‘d say yes, he can.

All that "Skirmish or Regroup:" says is that the card has two actions written on it, one a skirmish action and one a regroup action. So anything that would pull a skirmish action or a regroup action from the draw deck or discard pile can pull Sword Wall. Likewise, if there were some condition that said "You may play regroup events during the maneuver phase," you'd be able to play Sword Wall then too. It isn't a skirmish action and a regroup action, it's a skirmish action or a regroup action: you get to pick which.
