Old game design articles (Decipher)
« on: June 27, 2018, 01:17:43 AM »
For those who weren't around at the time(like me), or for nostalgic reasons, here's a compilation of Lotr TCG game design articles retrieved from Decipher's defunct website. They range from covering the evolution of a particular card/set to more general information and trivia. I've only edited them in terms of formatting, consistency, etc.

Enjoy some TCG history! ;D

Articles for blocks: FotR, TTT, RotK, Reflections and WotR. These are zipped PDF-files.

I love you.

This might also be my best chance to ask: does anybody have any archives of the old Decipher BBS - specifically, of course, the Dream Card forums.

It's an impossibly-long-shot, but all my digging has yielded nothing.

Sigh. It's weird being internet-old. There's a forum I may never see again.

Ah the decipher dream card forums.  Best one was from SW:CCG: "The Freshmaker" with a picture of Luke popping a mentos.

I miss doing the Speculative Card Lists - I still remember when Mount Doom was nearing release and they spoiled one of the new [Raider] cards with a card number in the high 30s. Of course that didn't align with previous set averages ([Dwarven][Elven][Gandalf][Gollum] and [Gondor] in < 40 cards - no way!) so I made my little stink in Everything Else about how sure I was that I'd found a typo in the collector's info.

One of the designers (can't remember who) popped up in a reply to smack me down. As if I would know! I felt super embarrassed for a few minutes, then opened up my Speculatives folder and started adjusting my MD card list.

Man did I love the wake of a good set of new cards! Mount Doom was a cool set. Not quite what I was hoping for, but cool.

Also, it's wonderful that I can still pull a memory like that out of my #$&*@! after fifteen years. I want to bring back the good-depthful-card-game days...

I don't remember that. I'm almost terrified to consider how many memories from the BBS I've quietly forgotten.

Thanks for posting these! Had fun reading the "Naming the Nazgul" article... I remember a long time ago enjoying their approach to the Nazgul name problem. The Ulaire [Fancy Number in Old Tongue] always sounds more menacing than just "Dark Nazgul" or whatever.
