HIDAN/Southron Archery
« on: September 07, 2018, 02:12:09 AM »
Planning on ordering the cards for this so any improvements or changes would be really appreciated!

FP (35)

Frodo, RA
The One Ring, IB
Eomer, TMoR
Eowyn, LoI

Aragorn, DoFP x3
Boromir, DoMT x2
Merry, Swordthain
Elite Rider
Sam, SoH
Leowyn

Rohirrim Javelin x2
Eowyn's Sword, DB
Brego
Rider's Mount
Firefoot
Eomer's Spear
Blade of Gondor
Sting, BotEL
Ranger's Sword

Might of Numenor x2
Defend it and Hope x2

Gondor Bowmen x4
Help In Doubt and Need x2
Arrow Slits
Fortress Never Fallen
The Saga of Elendil
We Left None Alive

Shadow (35)

Desert Lord x4
Elite Archer x4
Southron Bowman x4
Southron Marksmen x2
Haradrim Marksman x2
Suzerain of Harad
Southron Archer Legion

Raider Bow x4
Ships of Great Draught

Red Wrath x2
War Towers x2
Discovered x2

Seasoned Leader x4
Rallying Call x2

Hopefully fairly self-explanatory! The idea is to pick off minions with archery fire (although you don't need to kill necessarily) then have Eowyn and Eomer finish them off - Boromir provides a self-healing source of HiDaN boosts in case it's needed. If you want to risk 6 comps or only running one of the Gondor guys Merry can recycle the Javelins.

Cycles well as other than the handful of events you can play everything straight out of hand (Leowyn helps too).

Shadow loads up minions with Seasoned Leader, adds a few threats and grinds the fellowship down - the Marksman and Suzerain in particular can really put the hurt on the fellowship once you've exhausted a few people.

I feel like the Shadow could use some work. Your minions are mostly expensive and prone to direct wounding. You are also lacking crowd control and the ambush from Raider Bow is nice but everyone is already an archer. Why not just use Mumakil of the Harad and save on twilight anyways?

I actually like the Desert Lord-based strategy of just making him an insane bruiser and protecting him with Line of Defense and Mumak.

Let me know what you think of something like this:
4x Desert Lord
3x Elite Archer
3x Mumak Chieftain
3x Southron Bowman
2x Úlairë Enquëa, Lieutenant of Morgul
4x Mumak
2x Discovered
3x War Towers
2x Whirling Strike
1x Bold Men and Grim
2x Field of the Fallen
1x Line of Defense
1x Rallying Call
4x Seasoned Leader

Cheers,
-wtk

Thanks - think I'd like to keep it more wounding focused but you're right about the costly minions and lack of card control.

Totally didn't think about Mumakil of the Harad - makes much more sense than the raider bow, although I think dropping to Whirling Strike and focusing on pre-skirmish wounding is better.

Perhaps:

-1 Southron Archer Legion
-1 Suzerain of Harad
-2 Red Wrath
-4 Raider Bow

+2 Ulaire Enquea, LoM
+2 Whirling Strike
+2 High Vantage
+1 War Towers
+1 Bold Men and Grim

One of my favorite combinations in the game is when you have a Desert Lord on a Mumak with Seasoned Leader and he is primed to kill a companion. Use Seasoned Leader to remove a threat and play Bold Men and Grim from the discard pile, then, when you get the kill you can discard another companion as well!

Anyways, to each his own, but I think you are going to run into a wall when you face wounding decks. Eowyn, Lady of Ithilien single-handedly dismantles this strategy, and Shadowplay/Unheeded are fairly common in Movie Block as well.

Mmm might be worth maxing out the high vantage then? That should protect from Unheeded and Eowyn shouldn't be an issue as I can exhaust before skirmish (unless I'm missing something?)

I still find Line of Defense with four Mumak in the deck a better call than High Vantage. Mumak increase strength, make your minions fierce, and generate twilight. And if Line of Defense is discarded, you can recoup it with Seasoned Leader. Mumak Chieftain can replay your discarded Mumak (for no twilight) and protect your other minions. Definitely a better value than Southron Archer Legion, and, I would argue, Elite Archer.

So from testing you're definitely right, good call so thank you!

Currently looking like this:

4x Desert Lord
4x Southron Bowman
2x Elite Archer
2x Southron Marksmen
2x Haradrim Marksman
2x Mumak Chieftain
1x Ulaire Enquea, LoM

3x Mumak
1x Ships of Great Draught

3x War Towers
2x Whirling Strike
1x Red Wrath
1x Discovered

4x Seasoned Leader
2x Line of Defense
1x Rallying Call
1x Bold Men and Grim

Bumped to 36 and added another arrow slits to the freeps to deal with those pesky corairs

17 minions in 36 cards still feels low. I would drop one War Towers and add another Mumak Chieftain, and drop a Line of Defense for a Southron Commander for a little bonus crowd control.

Can't get hold of any more Mumak Chieftain sadly, what would you suggest instead? Another Enquea or maybe Southron Fighter?

Any suggestions for the freeps?
