Shadow Total   37

So the shadow is pretty straight forward, work to get minions stacked on the Goblin Swarms and drop some bombs starting at site 5ish, the free peoples is very combo intensive. At the start, Smeagol/Pippin will take care of most minions. Once you start getting set up, The extra Pippin is there to switch once you past the site where you're opponent stops roaming. Unheeded/Shadowplay will kill some people, Aragorn and his bow will drop 1 or two, Smeagol/Don't Look At Them will mop up the leftovers. Aragorn and Merry will fight the survivors. Don't Look At Them triggers A Light In His Mind which combines with The Shire Countryside to rinse and repeat. Use Never and/or Aragorn to remove threats, Frodo to play back Smeagol, voila, ready to go.

I know, it would die to Saruman's Power, but it's loads of fun to play when you're opponent fails to decimate your support area.

Then Shadowplay as much isengard minion as possible until it's too late ;)

After a few games, figured out it's best to go second as you have a better chance of drawing key cards before your first freeps turn.

Shadowplay limit once per turn. if you have 4 out can you do it 4 times... probably a dumb question but just had to make sure.

Use the search function drj0000. You'll find a lot of answers there.
And you already asked that question here http://lotrtcgwiki.com/forums/index.php/topic,7461.0.html :o.

VERY late to the party here, but just wondering what the point of the Birthday Present was ?
It looks like you only have Unheeded as a Shire event?
Not trying to bash, just curious as to it's purpose.

If there are copies of only one [Shire] event in the discard pile, Birthday Present will pull that event - the Shadow player doesn't get any choice. Here, Birthday Present is used specifically to bring copies of Unheeded back into hand (up to four per turn).

As the card text is "Add a burden to choose 2 [Shire] events with different card titles from your discard pile. ".
If you're unable to choose 2 events with different card titles, surely the rest of the card text becomes irrelevant as you haven't been able to do the initial action of selecting 2 evens with different card titles?

You're certainly not the first person to ask about Birthday Present. You would be right, but it's written in a very specific way to allow something counter-intuitive (pull a card without giving the Shadow player any choice) to happen. Two relevant bits from the rule book to start with:

Quote from: Comprehensive Rules 4.0
costs for an action are usually listed before the word "to" (so the action takes the form of "pay X to do Y," with X being the cost and Y the effect).
...
If the effect of a card or special ability requires you to perform an action and you cannot, you must perform as much as you can and ignore the rest. (See limit.)

As you know, if you cannot pay the costs in some way, the effect is ignored. The cost of Birthday Present is simply "add a burden." Once that cost is paid, we move on to the effect. If there are not 2 different [Shire] events in your discard pile, the "perform as much as you can" stipulation has us pull as many as we can (either none or one). Your opponent then chooses one card (if able), and that card is put in your hand.

There are a few ways it could've been written to prevent this, but the card's designer wanted to allow the Free Peoples to always get a certain card back if there were no other [Shire] events in discard. For example, it could have said "Add a burden and choose 2 [Shire] events with different card titles from your discard pile." or "Choose an opponent and make him or her choose 1 of those cards for you to return to your discard pile. Take the other one into hand." The wording is very careful to allow manipulating a single card and remain consistent with the rules.

As you may imagine, there was confusion when the card was released too. Decipher released a clarification for the card explaining the intent in the Current Rulings Document from just after it was released up until Comprehensive Rulebook 4.0. This is taken from the August 9th, 2005 CRD available at http://lotrtcgwiki.com/wiki/_media/crd_2005_0809.pdf

Quote from: Current Rulings August 9th, 2005
BIRTHDAY PRESENT                               10 R 104
If the Free Peoples player has only 1 event (or up
to 4 copies of the same event, but no other [Shire]
events) in his or her discard pile, that event is
taken into hand.

Hopefully that clears things up. I know it isn't a satisfactory answer, but the card remains consistent with the rules even without Decipher's clarification.
