Fellowship had a massive print run since it was the first set, and TTT didnt really have that much useful rares (mostly ATAR, Eomer, Legolas DH and Simbelmyne). RotK added quite some 4-ofs with the nazgul, Small Hope, Morgul Brute, various besieger cards).

Ah, ok. I was thinking the print runs might have operated similar to the way Magic print runs do, but if they were printing in fewer batches it makes sense current prices relate to playability that way.

Shifting gears a little, if I'm not necessarily looking for 4x rares for certain decks, have any suggestions for picking up useful commons/uncommons (Forearmed, Great Hill Troll, et alia), especially those for which the boxes are slightly more expensive (like Siege, not T&D)?

Try the various webstores. I know in the Netherlands that cardexchange.com has some singles still in stock.
