Ideas for Set 1 only decks?
« on: October 23, 2014, 02:51:40 AM »
I recently came into possession of a large quantity of cards from Set 1. As something a bit different, I am thinking about using them as a standalone pool of cards rather than mix them in with the rest of my Fellowship Block cards.

Given that for some time these would have been the only cards available, does anyone have any deck ideas using only Set 1 cards?

I tried searching the net but can only find general Fellowship Block decks.

Thanks for humouring my craziness and for any suggestions!

Cheers
Chris

Hey Chris!

We actually have leagues on Gemp that have a series which features cards from only set 1.
What you see is A LOT of Nazgul running around. Count on Black Breaths and Blade Tips relentlessly infesting your fellowship!

During this league I tried everything from Sauron/Nazgul Combos to weird Moria decks, and I actually found my Uruk deck to be quite good...maybe because everyone expected Nazgul.

I will see if I still have the deck saved on the site, and if not I will reconstruct it and list it here for you

Here's what I did with this format.

The Fellowship is kind of a mains and toys, but is an anti-Prancing Pony deck. Basically you bid 6 and start Green Dragon to mess up your opponent from pulling Aragorn right away (most likely their one copy, so they might be forced to start with him and fish for legolas).
Since you are dealing with set 1 only, surviving the first two sites against Nazgul is very hard. This is why I found a deck that features maximum stealth cards the best option. Basically, with this deck, if you aren't drawing more companions or support cards for them, you will have some skirmish canceling ability. Go slow at first and keep Gandalf alive to get rid of BB and BT with Sleep. If you can be at site 7 or 8 and still have a few companions alive and a healed Boromir, you should be fine.

The Shadow is kind of a classic Uruk Beatdown. You can see it has a lot of x4 of different rares, to make the Uruks competitive. Since that's a little hard to achieve sometimes with physical cards, my best ideas towards possible substitutions are:
Troop of Uruk-hai for Orthanc Assassin or Uruk-hai Raiding Party
Uruk Lieutenant for more Uruk Rager/Warrior/Slayer
Savagery to Match Their Numbers for more Bred for Battle (NOTE: If you are swapping out for more Bred for Battle, you should also swap a couple ragers/warriors/slayers out for Uruk-hai Raiding Party. You need an exert to use that pump, as opposed to STMTN, so you want guys with a little more vitality).

Free Peoples
Gandalf, Friend of the Shire Folk
Sam, Son of Hamfast
x3 Aragorn, RotN
x2 Boromir, SoD
Legolas, Greenleaf
Arwen, DoE
Merry, Friend to Sam
Gimli, SoG
Barliman Butterbur, PPP
x2 Armor
Ranger's Sword
Aragorn's Bow
x2 Glamdring
x2 Sting
x2 Sleep Carhadras
x4 Hobbit Intuition
x4 Hobbit Stealth
x3 Servant of the Secret Fire

Shadow - Uruks
x3 Lurtz, SoI
x4 Troop of Uruk-hai
x4 Uruk Lieutenant
x3 Uruk Rager
x3 Uruk Slayer
x3 Uruk Warrior
x2 Saruman's Ambition
x2 Uruk-hai Rampage
x2 Bred for Battle
x4 Savagery to Match Their Numbers
x2 Saruman's Power
Ulaire Enquea, LoM

Maybe this can give you some ideas! :)
I'll post a list of a Cave Troll beatdown deck that I saw someone using in the league too, which worked pretty effectively against me!

Here's the deck I've used in the last few leagues.

Ring-bearer: Frodo, Son of Drogo
Ring: The One Ring, Isildur's Bane

Adventure deck:
The Prancing Pony
Bree Streets
Ford of Bruinen
Moria Lake
The Bridge of Khazad-dum
Galadriel's Glade
Anduin Wilderland
Anduin Banks
Summit of Amon Hen

Free Peoples Draw Deck:
1x Gimli, Son of Gloin
1x Arwen, Daughter of Elrond
2x Gandalf, Friend of the Shirefolk
2x Aragorn, King in Exile
1x Aragorn, Ranger of the North
1x Thrarin, Dwarven Smith
4x Elrond, Lord of Rivendell
1x Albert Dreary, Entertainer From Bree
1x Barliman Butterbur, Prancing Pony Proprietor
1x Ottar, Man of Laketown
2x Gimli's Battle Axe
1x Gimli's Helm
2x Asfaloth
2x Gwemegil
2x Glamdring
1x Aragorn's Bow
1x Athelas
2x Ranger's Sword
1x Sting
4x A Wizard Is Never Late
3x Servant of the Secret Fire
2x Sleep Caradhras

Shadow Draw Deck:
3x The Witch-king, Lord of Angmar
3x Úlairë Attëa, Keeper of Dol Guldur
3x Úlairë Cantëa, Lieutenant of Dol Guldur
3x Úlairë Enquëa, Lieutenant of Morgul
2x Úlairë Lemenya, Lieutenant of Morgul
3x Úlairë Toldëa, Messenger of Morgul
4x Nazgul Sword
1x The Pale Blade
4x Morgul Gates
3x Relentless Charge
1x Their Power Is in Terror
4x Black Breath
4x Blade Tip

It's been pretty successful, with a 24-6 record  in Set 1 games (and another win by accident playing Sets 1-2 as well).

I think Gandalf is pretty much essential in any Set 1 only deck, as Sleep Caradhras is the best condition removal available.

Arwen is pretty key, as one of the few companions that can consistently beat Nazgul (with Gwemegil).

Yeah I lost to this deck! Black Breath and Blade Tips definitely shine in Set 1.
This shadow works well because, as you mentioned, Sleep is the best condition removal available, BUT it has a big cost when going up against Nazgul, who will gladly eat up that extra 3 twilight.

I did see someone running Elven allies with The Seen and The Unseen, which I thought was pretty cool, but not quite as potent if you're dealing with 2 BB and 3 Blade tips haha
