Gondor/Hobbit condition killers?
« on: January 20, 2015, 02:55:25 PM »
Hello! I am wondering if there are any gondor or hobbit cards that will discard shadow conditions, especially sauron or isengard conditions. Thanks in advance!

There are only two that come to my mind, but I am only familiar with pre-Shadows cards:

Bilbo, WSG
Athelas

Derufin and Catapault are two other options. Derufin is great against Corsairs, Besiegers, and Uruk Archery.

I have Athelas, but the other suggestions are not quite what I'm looking for. I play with rangers (Ringbound) and no hobbits other than Frodo, so knight cards wouldn't fit. I just thought I'd clarify. Thanks!

Several copies of Athelas + These Are My People is a great combo if you include Aragorn. Works wonders too with Brace of Coneys + TSC.

What format are you building for?

I guess you could call it expanded, but almost all the cards that I (and everyone else in my group) play with are from the movie block. I am using a deck of actual cards, so crazily expensive later deck cards really are not an option. Actually, I don't think that we really play any format at all, come to think of it. Just none of us have the restricted cards that would make it 'open.'

Boromir's Cloak is beautiful against Weather Conditions. In every FotR block deck that I run Gondor in, I also run Bilbo, WSG and a bunch of tales alongside Answering the Cries, so that if there's a tale that I don't need (such as Might of Numenor), I can discard it using Bilbo or to give a strength pump. Or I can use the actual card itself.
If we're gonna play games, I'm gonna need a cup of coffee.

The tales for WSG can't be discarded from hand, but from play.

Really? That's never been the way I played, because it would severely weaken FP condition discard when you don't run Elves or Gandalf. Of course, I only play physically so our rules don't quite align with what's on Gemp.

Just read Bilbo's text. He doesn't say to discard the tale from hand, so by default, that means it must be discarded from play.
All cards do what they say, no more, no less.

So it would appear if you don't want to play by my, uhh, "amended" rules, it'll be a little tougher to run Bilbo, WSG effectively, unless you run some tales that are in play, like Gondor Bowmen, Tale of the Great Ring, etc.

The best Gondor card to remove conditions is definitely Pallando, Far-travelling One.

Unfortunately that's a rare from a later set.

HalbaradDunadan, any chance you could splash Gandalf in your deck? The best condition removal for Free Peoples will always be the classics: Sleep, Caradhras or Deep In Thought. Gondor and Shire tend to like their conditions, so you'd probably be leaning towards Deep In Thought. Of course that means spotting 4 twilight so you can play it. To do that, you can include a number of Maneuver events in your deck to add twilight, or you can add Followers that put twilight in at the start of Maneuver. There are a number of Followers that are either common or uncommon, and you might find them helpful to your deck above and beyond just adding twilight in:

Robin Smallburrow, Shirriff Cock-Robin (currently $2 on ebay)
Alatar, Final Envoy (currently $1 on ebay)
Woodhall Elf, Exile  (currently $2 on ebay)

There are other common and uncommon Followers that might also be helpful, but they've got spotting requirements, or don't add in quite as much twilight. Even Pallando, Far-traveling One can be had for $15 or less.

I support sgtdraino's idea, that's indeed the best way to counter conditions. But if you choose to use Bilbo WSG, you might pack some copies of cheap support area tales to expend: Three Monstrous Trolls, Till Durin Wakes Again, Stairs of Khazad-Dum, Thorin's Harp. Each costs (0), is non-unique and doesn't have spotting or exerting requirements. Three Monstrous Trolls is awesome with Hobbit Party Guest!

Red Book of Westmarch works wonders if you choose that path, so you'll want to add several copies of it...
