Spotting is voluntary unless it’s phrased with "can," e.g. "for each X you can spot." Edit - which doesn’t apply here; see Bib’s post.

Seclusion ("Spot an Elf companion") is voluntary; you can play it and then decline to spot a companion so no condition gets discarded.

You Do Not Know Fear on the other hand is mandatory ("for each Uruk-hai you can spot"), so yes, you would be forced to discard your own Shadow conditions if your opponent runs out.

If the Shadow player has no conditions in play, then you must discard one of your own when you play Seclusion.
All cards do what they say.

D’oh... funny how I can get DiT right but Seclusion wrong. I think the stuff on mandatory/voluntary spotting is correct, but of course spotting for Seclusion is a requirement to play the card (again), and once you play it you might have to discard your own condition. Sorry about that, Alex!
