MTGPlayer celebrates the return of Hypnotic Specter to Type II with a bit of original fiction.

A long, sinister specter slashed its claws across the hand of a mage. The strike leeched away one spell from the mage. The Hypnotic Specter returned to its master, a blue-black wizard of the House of Dimir.
The Dimir Mage laughed at his opponent, a white-green mage of Selesyna Conclave, stating that his attempt to stop his takeover of Ravnica was futile.
His Hypnotic Specter had been a victor of planes long ago, but for ages was forgotten and lost. Finally, it wandered the plane of Ravnica, until it was admitted into the house of Dimir. It could fight the battles it had longed wished for. The Specter kept all the Selesyna weak by using its draining blows. Spell after spell was burned away, until the Dimir host ended the fight with a ficious army of zombies and rouges. The Hypnotic Specter quickly became a great and powerful symbol. Its very name make the other guilds quiver with fear.
The dying Selesyna wizard called upon his saprolings to create a final, desperate attack. He took their energy and brought forth the Autochthon Wurm. Its titanic, musclular body flexed, displaying its strength.
The Dimir Mage was shocked. His Specter could not defeat such a beast. He called upon the darkest magic of the Dimir, giving the Hypnotic Specter the greatest Unholy Strength imaginable. The Hypnotic Specter’s body gave off a huge darkness, turning the heavens black as the heart of the Specter.
The ground boiled into an intoxicating swamp. The Hypnotic Specter struck the Selesyna mage with a final blow. The mage’s flesh rotted away and became a skeleton embedded in the bubbling swamp. The Saprolings and the Wurm gave a single cry of agony before melting away into dust.
This is the new Magic. Blue-Black milling is the way of the new Standard. Cards like Glimpse the Unthinkable, Szadek, Lord of Secrets, Circu, Dimir Lobotomist, and of course, Hypnotic Specter, are burning down decks. Then take black hand destruction and your opponent has nothing. Just imagine the look on your opponent’s face when they have no hand and barely a deck, when you have a 10/10 flying Vampire ready to multiply into a 20/20  . |
