This article is to help players on what you must be doing while playing the game and stay focused on what is happening.
--- end description ---

Stay focus on what is happening in the game is your key to play the game better. There are players that may know some what is in this article but may pick up few good points and to newer players, this is your opportunity to speed things up and improve your game play.

What you must do when playing the game? Here are few points you need to do.

1. Keep attention on what your opponent is doing.
One important factor is to always watch you opponent on what he is doing. This means don’t let your opponent cheat on you, if they able to do it just once, it adds a lot of advantage to their side. There are players often cheat when they know their opponent is not keeping an eye on them.

2. Always cut your opponents deck after shuffling.
Regardless your opponent may or may not be stacking their deck after shuffling, always make it a practice to cut their deck or better yet you can ask your opponent that you will shuffle their deck. Observe what he is doing and if you caught him red handed, tell him right away. When you caught your opponent and you told him, most of the time they will not do it. Be alert of players that will not let you cut or shuffle their deck, thus call a judge.

3. Keep your score with pen and paper.
There is no way both of you will have disagreement in life total. Ensure everytime you write each of your life total that both of you have agreed. This will make things easier when you are using dice and the table gets bumped. This will also give you way to ensure you are always aware of your lifes total and your opponents life total. They may be using spin down life counter, but only him will be scoring it and it will be your word against their word if the life is in question. Also, judge will not have much ruling on life totals being question unless they watch your game from start to end.

4. Always ask the judge if you are in doubt of the rulings.
This means don’t let your opponent make the decision on ruling and use his position and years of experience against you, that he knows the rule. There are times they are telling you this is the rule but may only saying it so they can win the game. Also, watch out when asking people around you as it may be just some of his friends and tell the same thing. Ask the judge only for the rule, there is nothing wrong in it, if your opponent is right then continue on.

5. Know your deck and practice with it.
This means regardless you design your own deck or your friend made it for you or you copy it from somewhere, play your deck and practice with it. Know how to play your deck and learn what your deck can do. Observe what can be improved or review what is lacking from your deck. Practice with it. There are some players using a championship deck but don’t know how to play it. Read a lot of articles, there are lots available online, see what decks are out there, how to play against it and how to beat it. This is good you are reading this article, this just mean you are doing it Smile Kudos to you!

6. Count your deck and sideboard before the game starts.
It sucks to lose if you get caught of presenting an illegal deck, it may accidental or your opponent purposely did it while shuffling your deck. Count your deck and make sure you have at least 60 cards and 15 sideboard before the game starts.

7. Observe the people around you. Beware of your opponent’s friend signals.
Know the people around you and observe any unnecessary signals. It is okay to ask the judge to have the watchers behind you to leave. If you are uncomfortable and suspecting signals to your opponent, call the judge and let them know. The judge know what to do.

8. Be courteous to your opponent and be sports after the game.
Good standards are very well appreciated, shake hands after the game. Be sportsmanship, if you win or lost, make friends. Don’t start bragging when you win, other players will lose their respect to you regardless you are good player.

Hope you like this article. As you may understand that strategy is not just about making an uber deck and knowing how to play it, it is also about strategy how you play the game overall.

Although this article isn’t really "strategy", I’m sure the good advice is well appreciated.

I’d include the following:

Bring food to day-long tourneys.
--sometimes matches drag on and you’ll have no time to get to the nearest fast-food place. nothing is worse than playing while thinking about the slice of pizza some random guy is having next to your table.

Use new sleeves every other tournament
--if your sleeves get old, and vets consider 2-3 tourneys with the same sleeve set "old", you might be asked to de-sleeve or re-sleeve during a match by a judge. Not only could this result in a game loss (for marked cards) but it is also time-consuming to sleeve your deck again.

Watch your stuff in general
--No need to spread any more sob stories about stolen gear other than talk about the thief that pocketed Grail’s $250+ Zoo deck. Yeah, it sucks. You can haggle all you want on a trade, saving a dollar here or two in trade value, then have that all reset hundredfold by some sneaky jerk.

I think we have variance on perceiving the meaning of strategy. Strategy means what? Well lets define strategy. Strategy is a plan, an approach or a method.

Strategy as I said in not just about making an uber deck and know how to play it or agains it. Strategy is about your plan or approach of playing the game. I understand that there are well experienced player on this and may see this useless, but we have to consider the general public and provide opportunity to everyone including new players.

Also, I made it clear on the beginning of article regarding type of players that may or may not read the article. This is about your approach while playing game.

Nice article, Wizards posts similar articles sometimes, like the Judges’ Top 50 Mistakes and others. Good for you to bring these messages to those who might not check Wizards as much.
