An analysis of the power of followers in today’s various gameplay environments.
--- end description ---

Gameplay Analysis

Overall:

The introduction of followers hit with a bang. With virtually no way to counter these guys, followers ruled LotR since their conception. A couple cards hit that could counter them in the hunters, but followers still reigned supreme until three words entered the Lord of the Rings vocabulary.

Treachery and Deceit. To many people, Treachery and Deceit grates on their ears. It symbolizes the last, futile gasp of a dying game, in which the developers tried to snatch the last bit of life out of the game. With the Rise of Saruman and the introduction of a minion follower. Treachery and Deceit accelerated followers to an even more broken status, but finally countered it with an even more powerful card, Frenzy of Arrows. A rock-paper-scissors element got thrown into the game, in which followers could expect to be annihilated easily by a unrelenting combination with Isengard Underling and Goblin Hordes. Any deck that ran followers (or even those that didn’t, thanks to Saruman, Servant of Sauron) could be bombarded by massive archery, and then bombarded again with the Isengard Underling. This serious check on followers would seem to diminish their effectiveness, but with the introduction of Elven Armaments into the play environment, the threat grew rather easy to deal with.

The horns were also introduced. With an ability to toss followers for a bonus, these cards could also ameliorate the threat of Frenzy of Arrows by easily discarding followers, including the minion follower, Saruman, Servant of Sauron. Rohan in particular got a boost with the horns.

Overall:

Heyday: Bloodlines through Treachery and Deceit.
Current Playability- Standard: High.
Current Playability- Expanded: High.
Current Playability- Open: High.
Current Threats: Follower tax, namely, Frenzy of Arrows and Whisper in the Dark. Preventability and follower discarding may also hurt a little.

The Shire- Shire:

The Shire culture shot off with a bang. The introduction of Sam, Great Elf Warrior made Hobbits suddenly playable around Mount Doom. Combined with Sudden Fury, losing skirmishes became good, and with Sam already tough and Sudden Fury able to keep other hobbits from overwhelming, any decent healing allowed the Shire to float through the adventure path to site nine. The introduction of Shadows gave the shire a few more toys to use, but they were never taken seriously. Then, Bloodlines hit the table, and with it followers. Bilbo, Aged Ring-bearer also joined the lineup, and now cards like Frodo Gamgee, Son of Samwise. Ring-bound hobbits began fighting, with Bilbo controlling burdens, The Gaffer, Master Gardener healing when necessary. One important aspect to Shire is the crazy choking ability, unlike other followers, Shire paid aid in burdens instead of twilight, giving it an amazing choking ability.

Hobbit wounding decks also took off around this time period. The shadowplay deck, which revolved around a bunch of hobbits using Shadowplay and finishing minions off with Unheeded was a great combo, but with the introduction of Daddy Twofoot, Next-Door Neighbor, Hobbits could easily take down a minion or two each turn. However, Shire had to few cards to back this up, and so Shadowplay was hardly ever run in a solo-Shire deck, but instead run with Eowyn, Lady of Ithilien.

Also of note, with the introduction of Bloodlines came a card New Chapter. At first glance, the card looks somewhat useless, relying on nabbing it first to utilize it, but this card was soon to become a broken combo with a as-of-then unreleased Rohan card.

Hunters came, and left a huge impact on the Shire culture. One card in particular offered HUGE potential, No Visitors. This card’s ability to cancel a skirmish combined PERFECTLY with Daddy Twofoot, Next-Door Neighbor. Add in a few of the new hunter followers for strength bonuses, and suddenly ring-bound hobbits killed everything, peeled off all their burdens, and healed everything up with Fates Entwined.

After The Hunters hit Rise of Saruman, and the introduction of several crazy twilight adding decks left the Shire without defense, but Shire remains a fun and competitive deck to play. Treachery and Deceit introduced a card that caused the death knell of all followers, but also introduced a new Shire follower, Robin Smallburrow, Shirriff Cock-Robin, which allowed mass cycling for the hobbits.

The Shire:

Heyday: Bloodlines through The Hunters.
Current Playability- Standard: Moderate. Twilight generation with Troll Swarm and Men Swarm defeats the Shire follower choke.
Current Playability- Expanded: Moderate. Moria adds to the list of threats, but is counterbalanced by the access to cards such as Power According To His Stature and a Legolas, Greenleaf splash to aid Shadowplay.
Current Playability- Open: High. The Shire Countryside is a card waiting to be abused. The introduction of Golden Perch Ale makes an AMAZING combination with followers.
Current Threats: Twilight generation hurts Shire followers, most of which rely on restricting the twilight pool with a burden aid instead of twilight.

Rohan- Rohan:

Starting off somewhat slow, with no followers until the introduction of The Hunters, Rohan followers even at this point simply boosted an already existing strategy, strength. Cards like Rohirrim Doorwarden took a beefed up Rohan companion loaded with a Javelin, Spear, Shield, Armor, a Mount, and a Helm an easy strength +6 bonus. And this crazy combo was easy to pull off with Gamling, Defender of the Hornburg. Not only that, but site control got a whole lot harder with a non-unique follower, Rohan Worker. Load four of these up on a companion, win a skirmish, and liberate four sites. The timing for this was perfect with Uruk-hai Hunters running all over the play environment. Rohan Stable Master greatly aided the Rohan strategy of running, allowing a companion to be considered mounted for cards such as Riding Like the Wind.

However, Rohan followers did not hit their pinnacle until the introduction of Treachery and Deceit. With the introduction of Gamling’s Horn, New Chapter became extremely broken with an ability to play every follower as soon as it was nabbed, which became extremely easy with a card called Something Slimy when used with Dammed Gate-Stream.

Rohan followers are still very powerful, and a standard-format Oath of Eorl deck may become a formidable fighting deck with the horns.

Rohan:

Heyday: Treachery and Deceit and beyond.
Current Playability- Standard: Ultra-High. Broken with the Erkenbrand’s Horn combination.
Current Playability- Expanded: Ultra-High, same reason as aforementioned. Moria Corruption becomes a viable deck, as a typical swarm plus Gollum, Dark as Darkness and Lost to the Goblins can become an auto-corrupt, with nothing but shadow cards in the deck.
Current Playability- Open: Ultra-High. Fruit Loops will shiver in fear as you run faster than they. Infinite Gandalf and other broken combos die as you shoot off from the start while they’re still trying to set up.
Current Threats: Frenzy of Arrows, but this card can be easily stopped with an elf and Elven Armaments.

Gondor- Gondor:

Gondor has never been at the top of its game with followers. Not getting any followers whatsoever until Treachery and Deceit, Gondor currently has three followers, Faramir’s Company, Gondorian Servant, Denethor’s Handman and Elendil’s Army, both of which are decent, supplemental followers to already existing strategies.

However, with the introduction of Treachery and Deceit, a card that gave Gondor followers a huge boost was released. The Horn of Boromir, The Great Horn allowed Boromir to fight like crazy and completely drop swarms in their tracks. However, with few cards to supplement this deck, it seems that the most Gondor followers will ever do is act as a supporting force in an Oath of Eorl deck.

Gondor:

Heyday: Treachery and Deceit.
Current Playability- Standard: Moderate/High. Standard play environment conducive to a Rohan/Gondor follower deck.
Current Playability- Expanded: Moderate. Gondor has better cards to use in expanded, but the followers may find a place in some supporting roles.
Current Playability- Open: Low. Gondor was never great in open, and what few decks the culture made it into will probably have no need for followers.
Current Threats: Follower discarding. Gondor’s superb healing can effectively combat wounding decks, but follower discarding will cause a major problem for a deck that uses followers for the purpose of discarding them.

Gandalf- Gandalf:

Starting strong and keeping going, the Gandalf culture took off with the new followers, including the widely-used (and abused) Pallando, Far-Travelling One.

The release of Bloodlines created a huge potential for Gandalf, with the condition Strange Meeting being a great boost to any strength strategy. Combined with G for Grand, a strategy using extremely powerful beatdown Ents became a viable force upon the release of Bloodlines. Rotation of Two Towers removed most of the ents from the play environment, but the Hunters quickly brought them back, and more powerful than ever. Ents continue to remain a powerful force in today’s environment.

Starting off with a bang, much like Shire, Gandalf gathered extreme momentum along the way. With the release of Expanded Middle Earth Deluxe Draft box, Gandalf men, which had been hanging around for a while, also emerged as a significant force, but didn’t really use followers until the release of Rise of Saruman. In Rise of Saruman, Barliman Butterbur, Prancing Pony Proprietor was released, as well as two other followers, both of which contributed to the Gandalf men beatdown strategy. The release of Treachery and Deceit gave follower punishment, but Gandalf still remains a powerful force in the field of followers.

Gandalf:

Heyday: Bloodlines through Rise of Saruman.
Current Playability- Standard: High. Gandalf men received a much needed strategy, which was delivered in the form of Rise of Saruman follower toys. A Strange Meeting package is also a welcome addition to any Ent deck.
Current Playability- Expanded: Moderate/High. Gandalf men take considerable time to set up, and expanded decks have a tendency to hit early without needing that much time to set up. Ents, the other Gandalf follower deck, gets punished severely by expanded format’s brutal enforcement of the rule of 5. But the wide splashability of some of the Gandalf followers, especially incorporated with a Gandalf package, makes these followers a fairly common sight in expanded format.
Current Playability- Open: Moderate. Gandalf has a number of great combos in open, but followers simply enhance the strategies. In open, Gandalf followers are often set aside to insure maximum cycling capabilities for accessing restricted cards quickly.
Current Threats: Gandalf followers are both vulnerable to follower discarding and follower tax alike. Elven Armament’s splash as usual solves the Frenzy of Arrows problem.

Smeagol-Gollum:

Gollum has one follower currently, Deagol, Fateful Finder is the only follower for the Gollum culture. The ability to grab possessions or artifacts works well with any deck running Smeagol, and Smeagol, Simple Stoor directly utilizes Deagol to get huge. Smeagol, Simple Stoor is a fairly common strategy, and when combined with Gollum, Her Sneak on the shadow side, a Smeagol/Gollum deck is nothing uncommon to see. Unfortunately, other than that, there is practically no use for Gollum followers.

Smeagol:

Heyday: Bloodlines.
Current Playability- Standard: Moderate. Simple Stoor deck is the extent of follower use.
Current Playability- Expanded: Low. Most Smeagol decks run in expanded are solo-Smeagol, in whch the only card Deagol could grab is Fishing Boat.
Current Playability- Open: Extremely Low. No reason at all to use Deagol here. Period.
Current Threats: Well…since there’s only one follower, Frenzy of Arrows usually isn’t a problem. And the only strategy used with Deagol requires him being in the discard pile, so discard is also not a problem.

Elves-Elven:

Elves got their first followers with the release of The Hunters. Elven followers have been useful, but mostly used as supplemental cads, with no strategy specifically built around them, and pretty dispensable. Since Elven Armaments is easily used in an elf deck, Elven followers are immune to the number one threat to followers, Frenzy of Arrows.

However, that is not the maximum use of followers for the elves. Elves work surprisingly well with the Rohan Horn deck. Elrond, Witness to History can easily grab back discarded Elven followers, while using Elven Armaments to protect from Frenzy of Arrows. Grab the followers, play back next turn to heal Elrond with New Chapter, packing multiple copies of New Chapter makes even better healing, so you have an infinite quantity of followers with mass healing.

Elvent decks in open format also got a large boost from Woodhall Elf, Exile. While Galadriel trashes conditions and possessions in the fellowships phase, Woodhall Elf, Exile can easily draw more events.

Elves:

Heyday: Treachery and Deceit.
Current Playability- Standard: High. Elrond, Witness to History package has awesome recursion and healing with the Rohan horns.
Current Playability- Expanded: High. Elrond package works as well in expanded as it does in standard.
Current Playability- Open: Ultra-High. On top of the Rohan deck, one Elven follower, Woodhall Elf, Exile, greatly enhances Galadriel, Lady Redeemed decks.
Current Threats: Follower discarding. Elven Armaments kills Frenzy of Arrows easily.

Saruman, Servant of Sauron- Isengard

Saruman, Servant of Sauron is THE ONLY minion follower ever made. His ability is nice in and of itself, but what makes this guy so powerful is not his ability, but that he’s a follower. Why? Cards such as Frenzy of Arrows, Isengard Ruined and Whisper in the Dark can now work even if your opponent doesn’t run followers. With this crazy ability in mind, many follower-hate decks now become playable without Free Peoples followers to hate.

However, Saruman has one major problem. The horns. Namely, Boromir’s Horn, The Great Horn, which has an ability to take down Saruman before Frenzy of Arrows can even trigger. Nevertheless, Saruman is a welcome addition to almost any deck, especially ones that tax followers.

Saruman:

Heyday: Treachery and Deceit.
Current Playability- Standard/Expanded/Open High. The ability to have an easy strength pump for a minion, as well as the numerous ways to tax followers makes this guy a prime card for any format.
Current Threats: Follower discarding. Namely, the horns. The horns can knock this guy off so fast he wouldn’t be able to do anything. Especially Boromir’s Horn, The Great Horn.

Well, shall we examine some of the decks that utilize followers?

Decklists

Rohan Horns/Moria Corruption-Expanded

With the introduction of Erkenbrand’s Horn, followers entered the point of brokeness. The ability to play every follower at site 1 is too powerful. But it’s fun.

However, this deck also gives an AWESOME boost to a long-forgotten strategy. Moria Corruption is an awesome deck to pair this with. Moria Corruption started off as an awesome strategy, but only works well when paired with massive filtering. Here Rohan comes to the rescue.

(55 cards)

Frodo, Resolute Hobbit
The One Ring, The Great Ring

Gamling, Defender of the Hornburg
Merry, Rohirrim Squire
Aldred, Eored Soldier
Smeagol, Simple Stoor

Arwen, Royal Maiden
Elrond, Witness to History x 4
Radagast, The Brown

Something Slimy
A Wizard is Never Late x 2

New Chapter x 4

Erkenbrand’s Horn
Gamling’s Horn
Rider’s Spear x 2
Rider’s Mount x 2
Elven Armaments x 2

Elendil’s Army
Faramir’s Company
Gondorian Servant, Denethor’s Handman
Deagol, Fateful Finder x 4
Meneldor, Misty Mountain Eagle
Gwaihir, The Windlord
Alatar, Final Envoy
Pallando, Far-travelling One
Radagast, Tender of Beasts
Daddy Twofoot, Next-door Neighbor
Frodo Gamgee, Son of Samwise
The Gaffer, Master Gardener
Hobbiton Brewer, Maker of Fine Ales
Hobbiton Farmer, Lover of Pipeweed
Uruviel, Woodland Maid
Dinendal, Mirkwood Archer
Woodhall Elf, Exile
Rohirrim Doorwarden
Robin Smallburrow, Shirriff Cock-Robin
Rohan Stable Master x4
Rohan Worker x4

Yes that’s right. 55 CARDS! But you play most of them at site 1. Try to win the bid, and go first. Play Dammed Gate-Stream, and use it to play Something Slimy. Use that to grab New Chapter. Then, use Gamling to play Erkenbrand’s Horn from your draw deck, and grab every follower in your deck at site 1. Get the Prancing Pony in play as fast as possible to grab Arwen. Your Moria side should cycle pretty well, it is designed to draw cards like crazy every turn. As soon as you grab Elrond, use Deagol to grab Elven Armaments (making sure you have Arwen out to play him). Once you draw A Wizard is Never Late and pull Radagast, you’re completely set up.

Use Gamling’s Horn and burn followers as necessary, especially Elven ones. Use Elrond, Witness to History to throw the followers back on top of your deck, and play to heal with New Chapter. With this, you have a perpetual healing, virtually infinite strength pump machine.

(55 cards)

Goblin Runner x 4
Goblin Scrabbler x 4
Goblin Sneak x 4
Goblin Backstabber x 4
Goblin Flankers x 4
Goblin Scavengers x 4
Gollum, Dark as Darkness
Ancient Chieftain

Captured by the Ring x 4
Lost to the Goblins x 4
Host of Thousands x 4

Goblin Scimitar x 4

Relics of Moria
Goblin Armory x 4
Goblin Swarms x 4
The Underdeeps of Moria x 4

Swarm like crazy. Use Relics of Moria and Goblin Scavengers to grab Scimitars, draw cards, and add twilight. Play all the minions you can, then use The Underdeeps of Moria to grab more minions.

Once the swarm is over, use Gollum, Dark as Darkness to exert the ring-bearer, triggering Lost to the Goblins. By this time, Gamling should have filtered your deck, allowing almost a certain auto-corrupt.

Gandalf Men/Stragglers- Standard

With the release of Rise of Saruman came the release of a card called Barliman Butterbur, Red-Faced Landlord. With his crazy ability to utilize followers in fighting, combined with Strange Meeting for even greater pumping, this card was just begging to be used. Combined with a Stragglers swarm, both sides take a while to set up, and once set up, the Free Peoples runs without cards, leaving your entire hand dedicated to setting up a shadowkill.

But don’t underestimated the power of fighting alone.

(35 cards)

Gandalf, Bearer of Obligation
The One Ring, The Ring of Rings

Barliman Butterbur, Red-Faced Landlord
Brand, King of Dale

Jarnsmid, Barding Emissary x 3
Ghan-Buri-Ghan, Chieftain of the Woses x 2
Librarian, Keeper of Ancient Texts x 3
Grimbeorn, Beorning Chieftain

Pallando, Far-Travelling One x 2
Alatar, Final Envoy x 2
Meneldor, Misty Mountain Eagle x 2
Radagast, Tender of Beasts
Gwaihir, The Windlord

Last Stand x 3
Strange Meeting x 4
Watch and Wait x 2

Beorning Axe x 4
Shadowfax, Unequaled Steed
Radagast’s Herb Bag
Glamdring, Foe-Hammer

Start by setting up you companions. Gandalf set up can reach a respectable 11 resistance, so he can take a few burdens. Jarnsmid peels them off anyway, especially with Watch and Wait. Burn excess copies of companions with Gandalf, to prevent burdens and help cycle.

Once you get set up, load up followers like crazy, and Barliman Butterbur can reach an easy 24 strength. Other companions are tough as well, with your Librarian and Brand helping a lot. Clobber everything. Cycle even more with Strange Meeting’s muster. This deck lacks the power to kill minions to set up a double, except by a simple overwhelm. So, although you may be able to double, Radagast, The Brown is not included because this deck would seldom be able to triple, and he’s more valuable as a follower.

Courageous Easterling x 4
Bold Easterling x 4
Easterling Scout x 4
Pirate Cutthroat x 4
Rampaging Easterling x 4
Column of Easterlings x 2
Armored Easterling x 2
The Mouth of Sauron, Messenger of Mordor x 2

Stragglers x 4
Caravan from the South x 4
Last Days

Set up as fast as possible. Use the Mouth of Sauron to grab Stragglers ASAP. Then, reinforce like crazy with Pirate Cutthroat and Caravan from the South. Using Last Days and the discarding Easterlings, you can easily throw out a horde of minions to use Stragglers with a lurker to kill a companion. Best of all, you have some fierce minions for even more trouble.

The Shire Countryside/Orc Archery with Saruman, Servant of Sauron- Open

Shire followers have always had one unique characteristic. Aid is burdens. With this aid cost, there is one card begging to be broken.

The Shire Countryside.

Shire has many ways of peeling off burdens, so let’s get started and let the madness begin.

(35 cards)

Sam, Bearer of Great Need
The One Ring, The Great Ring

Westfarthing Businessman
Merry, Loyal Companion
Pippin, Wearer of Black and Silver

Westfarthing Businessman x 3
Radagast, The Brown
Aragorn, Wingfoot

Daddy Twofoot, Next-Door Neighbor
Hobbiton Farmer, Lover of Pipeweed
Hobbiton Brewer, Maker of Fine Ales

Community Living x 3

Frying Pan x 4
Sting, Weapon of Heritage
Bill the Pony, Dearly-Loved

Golden Perch Ale
Sudden Fury x 4
Scouring of the Shire x 2
Home and Hearth x 4
The Shire Countryside x 4

Add burdens with your followers, return Pippin to your hand every turn, and play him to trigger Home and Hearth. Load tokens on Golden Perch Ale for even more madness, and use Bill the Pony to control Scouring of the Shire. Sam uses followers to rule the double, and with Sting, Weapon of Heritage, he combos nicely with The One Ring, The Great Ring. Don’t be afraid to allow tokens to pile on Sudden Fury, you get to heal next turn anyway.

Burdens fall off, wounds are healed, minions are discarded or wounded to death, thanks to Frying Pan and Aragorn, Wingfoot. Hobbits start running, Radagast makes them run even farther, what’s not to love about this deck?

(35 cards)

Gothmog, Morgul Leader x 2
Mumak Commander, Giant Among the Swertings x 2
Orkish Lackey x 4
Isengard Underling x 4
Orkish Smith x 3
Ulaire Enquea, Lieutenant of Morgul

Goblin Hordes x 4
Unforgiving Depths x 3
Whisper in the Dark x 4

Saruman, Servant of Sauron x 4

Frenzy of Arrows x 4

Okay, this deck combines many forms of NPE into the ultimate deck of brokeness! MUAHAHA!

Well…since the deck isn’t evil unless you know how to play with it, let me explain. Goblin Hordes + Isengard Underling + Frenzy of Arrows + Saruman, Servant of Sauron= Ouch. Goblin Hordes + Orkish Lackey = Ouch. Whisper in the Dark + Saruman, Servant of Sauron = Ouch. Gothmog = Ouch. Mumak Commander + Orkish Lackey = Ouch.

Mix them all together, and you’ve got the potential for one whopping, gigantic mega-ouch. And Enquea is there to make sure they don’t break the rule of 5 (not that it would matter if they didn’t). This deck sucks a lot of twilight, however, for example, a perfect scenario is this.

Gothmog is sitting there in the regroup phase. You use his ability to nab all 4 Isengard Underlings for next turn. Next turn, you grab 3 Orkish Lackeys and Gothmog, holding a Mumak Commander in your hand. You play them all, companions exert with Whisper in the Dark, you kill a companion or two or three with the Lackeys and the Mumak Commander, and then unleash a Frenzy of Arrows. Total: 23. But, the deck can still be used to wound slowly if you don’t have enough twilight, the Whisper in the Dark / Orkish Lackey combo is good enough to kill off some companions for about 4.

Threats

Followers have never had very many threats. But the release of Treachery and Deceit changed that. I will break down threats to followers into several different categories.

Tax: These cards penalize the Free Peoples player for using followers (or often use Saruman, Servant of Sauron to inflict heavy penalties).

-Whisper in the Dark
-Frenzy of Arrows
-Isengard Ruined

Discarding: These cards simply discard followers.

-Ravaging Wild Man
-Uruk Village Assassin
-Set Up. Although this card does not actually discard followers, it puts them out of action for a turn.
-Ill News is an Ill Guest
-Fury of the Evil Army
-All Life Flees

Hijackers: These cards use followers for their own advantage, making minions nastier when followers are in play.

-Hunting Herdsman
-Orkish Assassin

Well…I hope this article helped show you the power of followers, and their playability in current formats! Since this article is indisputably the best article so far this month, please give it a 5! Or whatever you think it deserves (preferably a 5).

Special thanks to AnxiousChieftain for (modified) use of his deck, found here in the article Gamling, Won’t You Blow Your Horn…

I liked the format, but will have to split-read it, it’s too large for me to grasp at once, as it tackles an aspect of the game that’s never been part of my gaming experience.

Wow after an age of reading through this ive finally finished. Well its exhaustive (as well as exhausting) i cant think of anything youve missed as regards followers or the meta for their use. Cant see any spelling mistakes or typos.

Its definately a 4 probably a 5 as i cant really see what more you can do to it.

One thing i would mention, that you missed, as its definately worth abusing is Isengard Ruined with Saruman Servant of sauron. If you can manipulate that site you get some evil exertions going on, but just once is funny enough.

The risk of transferring Saruman is to great. The minion usually gets killed.

How can you do an article on followers and mention all the cards that reference followers and ignore 1 that says exert a companion twice if a follower is transferred?

Its awesome. And what deck are you playing that the minion dies. be more selective with ur minion. I use my sarumans in my besieger decks (how often do companions smack 30 strength siege troops?) and my sauron deck. They dont lose saruman. Besides i pack more than 1 of him so just replay him.

I mentioned it. Isengard Ruined is in the tax section of threats. But I’ll add a small section in the Saruman section.

EDIT: Added it in between Frenzy of Arrows and Whisper in the Dark.
