Durail looked over his crew of men. Including himself, they numbered twenty total. A rather small number, but that was no matter. The hot summer air weight down on all of them, but the sweet smell of the flowers made it almost completely worth the heat.

The group was made only of trusted friends, all with great skills. The ability to use a sword was a must, some had bows they would use, and others were master woods men. They were a group, they were the elite, they were a band of men uniting together to wage war with Sauron in what ever way possible. Together, they merged their skills to create a team that was unbreakable.

They all sat in anticipation this would be their first mission and from the way it sounded, it wouldn’t be easy. Durail looked over the men one last time then began to speak.

“Not long ago, a series of raids took place in northern Gondor. To counter this threat, the steward Denethor ordered a militia be made and put to use. Over the operation were three generals, who were undefeatable. For the past ten years they have protected the towns, but recently they were captured and taken.” He paused and caught his breath. “After their capture, the militia hasn’t been able to stop the raids, and the food grown has been destroyed. These villages which are being raided are the chief suppliers of the Gondorian army. As we know, Sauron is marshaling an army; his target will most likely be Gondor, meaning the army needs those supplies.” Another pause, all just looked at Durail as he spoke, it was completely silent.
“It is imperative that we stop the raids, and find the militia commanders. Word has it that they were captured by a group of Easterlings which are now moving towards their home land. We must intercept them, destroy their camp, and free the prisoners. They however number over two hundred.” This time their was an awkward silence. “I understand if you are uncomfortable with this mission, but it must be done. I will give you a chance to leave, with the understanding that you will not say a word about this mission to anyone.” No body moved. Durail smiled, his entire face brightened. “Good, prepare yourselves, we leave tonight. We will travel light and fast, bring only what you need. Weapons, bed roll, dried meat and herbs, we will probably find fruits on the way, etc. You are dismissed.” The men turned and left. Two men however remained and walked up to Durail.

“Well my friend, we see each other again!” Durail turned from his pack and saw a tall slender man, though he was no man, but rather an elf. Both grinned and began to chuckle. The two clasped arms. “Tuilin! It has been far to long. I am glad you were able to make the group! I have missed our adventures together!” The other man looked down at the ground uncomfortably. He then looked up and met Durail’s gaze. “Imhis? You have also come like I requested? This is like a reunion.” The two men clasped hands in greeting.

Imhis spoke up, “It has been a long road, but I am here, you have a good group here. As you know, the south grows more restless with each month; war against Gondor is now openly talked of. The Haradrim have joined with Sauron, but now is not the time to talk of such things.”
Tuilin stepped in. “Your group is exceptional. How have you faired lately Durail?”
“Well enough I suppose, but life is hard. If you will excuse me I must finish packing.” Tuilin and Imhis nodded their heads, and also began packing their own supplies.

The company pulled out and made their way north. After traveling several miles, the group stopped and rested the rest of the night and began traveling again in the morning. They approached a small village, and were surprised to find it mostly in ruins. They rushed towards the town and entered with caution. They were met by several towns’ people who were trying to put out some small fires.

They stopped their work and walked towards the strangers.
Durail stepped forward, “What happened here?”
“We were raided last night. We believe it was a group of Easterlings; the militia tried to fight, but were driven back.” His voice was strained and he was obviously exhausted.

One man named Duinhir looked at the farmer and spoke, “Which way did they go, and how long ago was it?”
The Farmer pointed north, “They left not four hours ago.”

The group desired to pursue, but they helped the small town before they left. Once on the trail the group moved like the wind, stopping only for short breaks, but the group never did catch a glance of the Easterlings.

Durail looked at one man on the outside ring of the group. He sat head bowed and quiet. Durail approached him. The man moved not a fraction of a hair, but Durail could tell he was sensed by this man. Durail stood next to the man and stared out into the forest. “Colodan, come with me. I believe two men scouting will be better than one.” The man stood and strapped on his sword.
“Tuilin, you are in charge for now. Duinhir, would you and Imhis run through a few sword skills with the others just to keep loose?”

Durail and Colodan faded into the forest. He knew what he was doing. If his senses were right, Tuilin would make a good leader, Imhis and Duinhir would beat every warrior in the group, and Colodan would move through the woods like a wind, no sound what so ever, but aware of everything.

Durail was wanting to see if these men could be his special command group, this would tell.

Colodan whisked through the woods, feeling his cloak curl around his body, holding it shut as he almost danced, it seemed, among the brush, making very little noise, evading sight and hearing. From time to time, he looked over at Durail, saying nothing, but keeping even his breath at a low level. Not entirely silent...that was a trick that he had learned.

"You don’t have to be silent..." Yes, that’s what he told me. "Simply be as silent as any other creature of the woods."

And so Colodan moved, no louder than a chattering squirrel, but still swiftly. He could feel his cloak swaying slowly, waving as it caught the glimmers of light and scattered them softly, as it waved like the shadows on the forest floor. The man came to a stop, giving a quick hiss and listening. Durail had stopped, just a few feet from him.

"No sign yet," murmured the young man, barely moving his lips, sending the hardly-audible sounds over to his companion. "We continue on?"

Duinihir turned to Imhis. "We have some soldiers to train," he said. He and Imhis walked towards the troops.

Walking along the ranks, Duinihir pulled a soldier out of the ranks. He was a tall, muscular man, and seemed to be the strongest there. "Have you some skill with the sword, master soldier?" Duinihir asked.

"Yes, sir. Mostly with two-handed swords, the other ones are to small for me to bother with," the soldier replied.

"Good. You will use one of these smaller swords and see how you fair against me," Duinihir replied.

The soldier tried hard to stifle a chuckle, for Duinihir was not one of the most muscular men there. Anyone would have passed him by as an average soldier, yet there were qualities in him that gave him his rank. The soldier, however, simply saw a smaller soldier, and thought he would be easy prey.

Duinhir tossed the man a blunted sword, and grasped one of his own. The man charged and launched a devastating blow towards Duinihir. Duinihir leapt nimbly out of the way, and the sword crashed to the ground. The man swept his sword out in an arc in front of him, and Duinihir ducked under the blade and lunged forward, throwing his weight against the man. The man staggered back several paces.

The soldier, having learned his lesson, began the fight in a typical sword-fight style. This ranger could not be beat down by sheer strength.

Stroke after stroke, Duinihir parried and counterattacked with ease. The soldier was gashed several times, though the swords were blunt, while Duinihir had not been touched. The soldier began to slow down, breathing came harder, but Duinihir ever pushed the attack. Suddenly, in a last cry of desperation, the soldier lunged his sword at Duinihir, and Duinihir parried swiftly, flicking his arm in a peculiar manner, and the sword went flying from the soldier’s grasp.

"You see," Duinihir began, turning to the troops, "the strongest soldier on earth may be defeated by one of far less size, if he has the skill. Skill can match strength one for one, nay, it surpasses it. If all of you but learn the art of swordfighting, you are the match of any. In battle, these Easterlings are as skilled as you are. They are also men, and expert swordsmen, and they are battle-seasoned veterans. Do not think we have an easy victory, for you will probably be defeated if you are not skilled with the use of your sword."

"It is for that purpose, that beginning immediately, you will be sharpening your swordfighting skills at once. Imhis and I will be training you, and listen to our teaching, otherwise you will be outmatched in battle. By the time we are through, each of you will be s master swordsman who can simgle-handedly put a company of Easterlings to flight."

A cheer went up from the troops, and all of them unsheathed their swords, ready to fight.

Turning to the soldier he had just defeated, Duinihir said, "Do not underestimate the power of a longsword. Learn it well, and you will be unstoppable."

Turning to Imhis, Duinihir said, "Come Imhis, we have soldiers to train."

Durail and Colodan crept slowly to the edge of a ravine. Something strange had drawn their attention. Smoke, or the smell of smoke. Colodan was obviously a natural the woods. Durail was an expert woodsman, but when trying to creep, he was a child stepping on leaves compared to the Colodan.

They gazed down in the valley, and saw what they had not expected. A large host of Easterlings formed a circle, with a fire in the center. some were eating, others talking, others standing guard. One exceptionally tall one ran towards the fire. He yelled a command and several jumped up and put out the fire. The tall one which they guessed was the commander looked up at the patch of woods the two scouts were hiding in. He then turned and examined other points which may hold enemies. He motioned and the camp went back to its activity. Colodan and Durail hadn’t been spotted.

"There must be five hundred here! I was thinking it was fewer than that." We don’t have the man power to face such a large group. I don’t think so anyways."

The two marked the possition and moved back to camp. When they arrived they found Imhis and Duinhir sparing with blunt blades. The others sat on the grass inspecting their bruses. Durail pulled his sword quietly and moved in to the fight. Imhis and Duinhir struck at each other’s sword. Flame stopped them both.

Durail smiled "I told you to train these men, not dismember them." he chuckled. His smile vanished "We found what we believe to be their camp. They are in a larger number then expected. With the element of surprise, we may stand a chance. We will move in tonight."

The anticipation of a fight jolted through the camp. Men rushed to prepare their weapons.
They rested for six hours then moved to attack the enemy. They arrived and found the site deserted as if no one had been their.
This enemy was good! Within hours however, Durail had picked up their tracks and the small group was after the prey.

Tuilin smiled as Duinhir and Imhis shamed the soldiers. He walked in and intervened, "Shame is a good teacher, but example is a better one." Spar against each other and show them how you fight. He wasn’t a swordsman, though 2000 years of practice had made him rather good with one anyway. His specialty was the bow. Not many were more deadly then he was.

Durail came back, and announced they had found the enemy. Tuilin prepared himself. checked his 2 quivers, inspected his arrows, daggers, and sword. Did full maintenance on all of them, even sharpening individual arrows. He checked his leather armor as well. Then ate and rested, 15 minutes before they left he relieved himself and drank more water and ate a bit more food. He was ready. When they arrived at the site they were greeted by...nothing. But they found the tracks and were on the trail soon. Battle was coming. Tuilin took out his bow and an arrow, loosened his sword in its sheath and drank another sip of water.

It had been three days since the disaperance of the Easterling company. After several days of following, Durail and his party found the quary.
Not a mile ahead of them lay the Easterling camp. Colodan was scouting, and would return shortly.

Durail called a meeting. "Prepare for battle. Sharpen your weapons, and prepare to take these enemies! After you are finished we will run through our final moments of practice."

Durail waited for a few moments, then matched up against Imhis.
"We have practiced for this one day. Know you enemy." Durail said as he circled Imhis, who also circled Durail. "figure his strengths and moves." Durail and Imhis met eachother with wooden sticks they were using a swords.
Imhis spoke from the middle of the fight. "Watch his hands, and use yours." He slammed Durail under the chin.
Durail spoke in the middle of a fall. "use your momentum to help in a fight." He locked legs with Imhis and sent him sailing. the two continued fighting for several minutes sharing hints of battle.

They stopped, "Alright, pair up and lets fight." Durail turned to Imhis. "thank you. Those practices we have done at night have paid off." The command group had met several times at the dead of night and worked together to hone their sword skills.

The men began their practicing. they were actually very good, and moved quickly. This wasn’t a batch of raw recruits though, this was a batch of fully trained trackers attempting to hone their own skills. Durail was sure they were already better than their enemy, but being prepared was always best.

All they need was for Colodan to arrive, and they could start planning.

It was decided that Tuilin would take ten bowmen to the northern side of the camp, and set up a position. Durail and Duinhir would take five swords men and wait at the south side of the camp. Imhis and Colodan would infiltrate the camp at night and locate the Gondorian generals. Once located, Imhis and Colodan would set a tent on fire to signal the others to begin the attack.

The swordsmen would charge the camp with the archers providing cover fire. Once inside the camp the men would escort the generals out and head to the south, back towards the center of Gondor. Tuilin would lead his archers around once the generals were out of the camp and keep the pursuing enemies off.

Imhis and Colodan dressed in black and carried only their weapons and a few vials of liquide for healing properties just incase of trouble. They would kill a few easterlings and get the generals some weapons.

Tuilin and his archers set up a position with a perfect view of the camp. They quickly established targets and waited for the signal.

Durail and Duinhir looked on the camp with growing anticipation. The two couldn’t be seen in the darkness of the night. Durail dressed in his black cloak and Duinhir in his dark green.
"Are you nervous" Durail asked through the night.
"Not much, I just want it to be done already."
"It won’t be much longer now. Just wait for the signal."

The night closed in about them. No sounds, no wind, just blackness. The men would move soon.

Tuilin was waiting. He hated waiting. Especially before a battle. Durail hadn’t given him incredibly specific orders, obviously taking in account his skill at improvisation. He had come up with things rather quickly. After acquiring permission for 2 extra soldiers he had had them lug oiled rags and firewood. They had also brought flint and tinder to start it once it was ready. He was supposed to cause as much confusion as possible, and fire combined with arrows coming from no where had a tendency to do that.
He had been watching a Easterling sentry from his position for over an hour. As soon as a tent went up in flames the sentry’s life was forfeit. His fate was sealed, all that was left was for a blue shaft to come hurtling through the night and strike him down.
(Tuilin uses arrows died blue whenever possible)

Imhis and Colodan rushed through the confused mess of Easterling soldiers, the Gondorian soldiers in tow. Tuilin and his men were firing arrows indiscriminately into the mass of enemy soldiers, and panic was rising.

But these Easterlings were well-trained, and though afraid, they were already preparing for battle. A cry was going up, they had noticed the captains were gone. Soon he’d face resistance. Imhis hoped that Durail would have helped to clear out some of the enemy, at least. He needed as much distraction as he could get. Two armored soldiers at last seemed to notice the fleeing southerner. Raising their pikes, they let out a fearsome battle-cry. That cry was cut short as two throwing daggers cought them in the necks.

Imhis set his hand on his serpent-handled sword. It wouldn’t be long now, before the real fighting would begin.

Tuilin sighted carefully. He dipped the arrow in the flame and brought it up. The whistle and whoosh of the arrow and resulting fire must have been terrifying he reflected. He drew another arrow, this time one of his blue ones. Some easterlings were getting dangerously Close to imhis and Colodan "Can’t let them have all the fun" he chuckled. One about to slash at imhis dropped. He nocked a second arrow and fired again, again they didn’t see it coming.

BUt the easterlings were more then a rabble, they were starting to get organized, and they had found his group. 100 were charing. "Time to be elsewhere men, light this hill on fire and lets go." as they set the hill beneath them on fire they sent on final volley. 6 more easterling fell. Tuilin knew they had to go, if easterling caught up to them any more then 2 to 1 odds would be fatal. "Split up, 2 groups, Arlien lead 4 I will take 5, try to make it to the edge of the easterling camp and kill wherever you can. GO!" He started running elven stamina and adrenaline fueling his long strides.
