Title: Mithrandir Deck
Post by: putridbreath on March 22, 2010, 10:21:40 PM
I was wondering if anybody could help me brainstorm some ideas for a Mithrandir deck.

I've been doodling with whether I want to run 5 or 9 comps.
I'm liking Aragorn, King in Exile as a starter and Frodo, Hope of Free Peoples as the Ring-bearer
4x Gandalf, Mithrandir for healing and drawing him and a couple Sent Backs in case of an accident
Throw in some Merry, Impatient Hobbit w/ Elrond, Elven Lord  (both heal Gandalf who has his artifact staff and ring).
Sam, Son of Hamfast for burden removal...maybe Pippin, wearer of black and silver?
I wanted to have an aggressive deck focused on moving first to give my dunlending site control a chance to grab some sites on my opponent's first turn. I play Movie block with all sites allowed (not just king sites only) so site 1 would most likely be Westfold from towers block that exerts Aragorn twice to pull an aragorn signet comp out of the draw deck (hence the characters mentioned above.)
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I've never heard of that site, maybe you are talking about The Riddermark. I've seen people using pipes with Gandalf, Mithrandir. I don't suggest using Merry, Impatient Hobbit. Elrond could be fun. Hard Choice is also a good card to use.

Guys, there's one card that makes Mithrandir playable: Moment of Respite
Put a couple of those in your deck and the healing won't be a problem anymore.

Hard Choice and Moment of Respite are both good suggestions--thanks! but unfortunately I don't own a copy of the latter...

Perhaps Behold the White Rider, or Not the First Halfling + Ring of Barahir.  If gandalf dies and you bring him back with Sent Back, you may want to have Scroll of Isildur so you can get his ring back, and could think about These Are My People to get his sword back.  The Nine Walkers would make bringing him back less painful on the twilight side of things.  Probably too many suggestions.

Clockwork, try clicking on the link for westfold.  He got the site right.

Wow. It may sounds very akward, but I've never seen this site before.

Try Numenor's Pride. If you can get Treebeard, KotW in your fellowship somehow, you could play that during the regroup phase. He himself couldn't wound himself (It should be Gandalf, Masochist instead of Mithrandir) ;)

It shouldn't be hard to throw Treebeard, KotW inside if you run 9 comps, or burn ents after you play him (Saved from the fire) to get cards and reduce your fellowship to 5. Citadel to Gate might also be a good idea along with Numenor's Pride to get rid of the threats or you could use Aragorn, Driven by Need.

Hope this helps...

King in Exhile is a must... in my opinion.  moment of respite is a clever addition, i would never have thought of that.  has anyone mentioned have patience?

I kind of wish you hadn't made this thread, cause now I can't stop trying to come up with a deck.  :P  One thing that keeps jumping out at me though is that Gandalf, The White Wizard just seems to be a better option.  Many of the cards that look inviting add the twilight that would make him 10 just like Mithrandir, but you don't have to make all of the healing support plans.

Hard Choice is probably a better option than Have Patience.  Cheaper and gonna have Aragorn anyway.

Here's another idea, going in a different route altogether.  You are going to use sent back, so just plan on Gandalf dying every turn or two.  Don't worry about healing him.  Run plenty copies of his sword and maybe wizard's staff and reload him each time.  Or perhaps use These are My People to get his toys back before moving on.

If you go this route, you could Saved From the Fire Gandalf when he's about to die to get another Gandalf and two of his items. That way, you can play him immediately and don't have to take on a site without him. You could also use Fireworks to recycle Gandalf's gear back into your draw deck for SFtF, and Barliman Butterbur, PPP, to get SFtF or Fireworks when you need it. Of course, you'll be adding a lot of twilight each time you do this (The Nine Walkers helps a bit with that). I even have a name for this strategy: Phoenix Gandalf.

Alternatively, you could use Gandalf's Cart to store extra copies of his stuff.

EDIT: Gandalf's Wisdom could also help with the twilight.

For some time, I was also trying to build a Suicide Gandalf deck and I think that if you plan on using his equipment, deck can't run without Gandalf's Cart... it's a great card... just stack your possesions and artifacts on it until you need them, helps against hand clog and it's not limited to just [Gandalf] stuff.

But if Gandalf's Cart gets discarded, you are boned.
-wtk

Well, that goes for pretty much anything, but I believe there will be other possessions that pose a more immediate threat to the shadow player which he would like to discard... not many cards actually allow the Shadow Player to choose the Free Peoples possessions to discard. Most popular such card is Corsair Marauder and I really think he would rather get rid of Aragorn's Bow than Gandalf's Cart for example.

Isengard Smith is the one card I can think of that can take out Gadalf's cart in fellowship block.

Theoretically, Such a Little Thing could work as well, though the situations in which you could actually hit a loaded Gandalf's Cart with it are very rare.

Someone please make a Mithrandir decklist and post it here. A 10 strength, damage + 1 Gandalf is to awesome to discount. :D

Cool, thanks. What movie block sites would you recommend? Or Fellowship sites/TT/ROTK sites?

It always depend of the shadow you will use.

Well you could play with Borne Far Away and make BOTH Aragorn and Gandalf in phoenixes! :-0

Just to add to the implausibility of this deck...

A couple copies of Intimidate wouldn't hurt either, but it's your call.

Borne Far Away is fun, yes. It would be nice to resurrect other chars...I think aside from that card the only one that can come back from death is Gandalf.  :uh-huh:

I just found this topic and I used to play a Mithrandir deck.  I decided to use his wounding ability to help me, so I gave him Shadowfax and ran a bunch of Threw Down My Enemy.  I used Behold the White Rider too, to add some wounds for TDME.  I cycled these back with Fireworks and Barliman.  I can't remember the exact decklist, but it had both Sent Back and Moment of Respite to keep him alive with all the wounds.  It worked pretty well actually.  I might try to rebuild it and post the decklist here.

I couldn't find my old decklist, but I put this together in order to keep that theme.  It's 39 cards, but with Fearless Marksman and Moment of Respite I think it shouldn't be too bad.

Isildur, Bearer of Heirlooms
The One Ring, Answer to All Riddles
Arwen, Daughter of Elrond
Legolas, Fearless Marksman

Aragorn, King in Exile x4
Gandalf, Mithrandir x4

Aragorn’s Bow x2
Shadowfax x2

Narsil, Blade of the Faithful x2
Narya

Sent Back
Behold the White Rider x2
Hardy Garrison
Brooding on Tomorrow
Moment of Respite
Glimpse of Fate

Have Patience x2
Roll of Thunder
Threw Down My Enemy x4
Wielder of the Flame x2
Fireworks x2
Might of Numenor x2

I'd suggest Hard Choice over Have Patience to save twilight. However, Have Patience can be recycled with fireworks.
Also, it looks like Arwen and Legolas are pretty vulnerable --maybe Servant of the Secret Fire? Even No Mere Ranger could help. Sauron initiative trackers (especially) could cause some real damage against those strength 6 comps.
I didn't think of a wounding deck when I first thought of Mithrandir (Terrible and Evil is a death wish for him) but it does seem like he fits Behold the White Rider very well.

I don't think that Deck will work. My cousin actually playes a Mithrandir Deck which runs 4x King in Exile, but starts Faramir, Captain of Gondor with Vorondil, and Nrya, Gandalf's Staff etc. just a basic Gondor beatdown with Mithrandir and some tools. It works pretty well, cus' it's simple, I wouldn't try to go too many ways. The Decklist above is just too big, you're trying to do many things at the same time, and you usually get crushed by good shadow sites really easily.

And 39 (!) cards onyl work if you're able to draw about 6 or more cards during reconcycle. You will clog your hand with many events. If you discard them with Lego, you also could have included someting better. I only see hope if you pair this Deck with Moria. Maybe I'll post my cousin's Deck one day when I'm in Prague again.

I play Mithrandir as my most favorite Gandy many years and (unfortunately for many - impossible (just for open)) the best thing on him is http://lotrtcgdb.com/pages/LOTR11040.html by my opinion. Also fits nice with http://lotrtcgdb.com/pages/LOTR04088.html and http://lotrtcgdb.com/pages/LOTR07044.html.
