Title: Birthday Present
Post by: OneFathom on July 09, 2008, 08:37:53 AM
With Birthday Present, are you required to show your opponent 2 different Shire-culture events in order to play the card (like it says)?

The reason I ask is that more than one person has said your opponent HAS to choose Unheeded, for example, if that's the only Shire-culture event you have in your deck.

Any help?

If you only have one [Shire] event in your discard pile, then you will take that one event.

So part of my question is answered...but how is that possible you can get around the game-text of a card specifically saying something else?

If all you have is one copy of Unheeded in discard, you show that.

If you have two or more copies of Unheeded in discard, and no other [Shire] events in discard, you show two copies of Unheeded. Obviously you still get to them take one into hand. In this case the "show 2 events" part takes precedence over the "two different titles" because you do not have an event with a different title to show.

If you have Unheeded and another event NOT named "Unheeded" in discard, you have to show those two differently-titled events. In this case, you cannot choose two copies of Unheeded, since you are able (whether you want to or not) to show a [Shire] event with a title other than "Unheeded".

But wouldn't it say "take up to 2 Shire events"? Should the event be triggered if you don't have 2 separate Shire events in the discard pile?

You always do as much as you can. As long as you have at least one [Shire] event in discard, you can trigger the ability.

If, however, you have a Birthday Present and an Unheeded in your discard pile, then there's no way to nab Unheeded....if playing an opponent with any sense at all. So its kinda a one-time thing.

Although I kinda like the No Visitors/Unheeded dilemna. :D

Uh...except that Birthday Present is not an event.

So can I be sneaky and make them choose 1 card without them seeing the cards, then after they have chosen let them see the cards to show they were  [Shire] events?

You could certainly TRY, but I think you'd make your opponent very unhappy when they found out the truth. I wouldn't recommend it. ;)
