This is a discussion in a series to determine how to re-legalize the 25 movie block cards that are banned in "House Rules".
The list of all the cards can be found here. (http://lotrtcgdb.com/forums/index.php/topic,6509.msg66823.html#msg66823)
These "unbanning" discussions will be done in parallel through June 15th, 2011, at which time, we will vote on the solution we will use for each card.
Note: I will update the "Proposed Solution" section of this post as the discussion progresses.
Here we go! Let the discussion begin!
The Card
[2] Gondorian Captain [Gondor]
Companion • Man
Strength: 6
Vitality: 3
Knight.
Fellowship: Discard a fortification to remove a threat.
Current Situation
FOTR: N/A
TS: N/A
Movie: Banned (because of loop with Base of Mindolluin)
Legalizing Options
- Legalize as is (i.e. allow 4 per deck -- can be done per format)
- Restrict as is (i.e. allow 1 per deck -- can be done per format)
- Errata (i.e. change game text and allow 4 per deck -- affects all formats)
Proposed Solution
In this case, either just legalizing or restricting the card as is would still allow the loop to exist.
Therefore, errata of Gondorian Captain (or Base of Mindolluin) is the only option that would work.
[2] Gondorian Captain [Gondor]
Companion • Man
Strength: 6
Vitality: 3
Knight.
Fellowship: Discard a fortification to remove a threat (limit once per turn).

I have been considering this one and I think changing Base of Mindolluin would considerably affect its flavour and theme with the other King site 3's, so I feel a change to Gondorian Captain might be more appropriate. I would suggest this
"At the start of the fellowship phase, you may discard a fortification to remove a threat"
He doesn't seem to fit the theme of the other knights, but I think it makes him playable.
-
Restricting the ability to once per turn solves the loop and this could be achieved in a few ways ....
Changing the trigger to 'at start of fellowship phase' seems to solve the problem. But you can't play a fortification first and then use his ability which may impact/restrict its use.
How about ....
Fellowship: Discard a fortification to remove a threat. You may do this once each turn. (I can't remember if this type of restriction is commonly used in LOTR).
My two cents
-
Maybe make it a maneuver action?
-
Isn't it easiest to just put those little brackets and write (limit 1). Although I'd make it (limit 2).

I agree. Let's keep the text as close as possible to the original to preserve the "flavor" of the original card. May I suggest we keep the limit at "once", since there could be multiple copies of him on the table. What do you think?

Preserves the timing of the card
I am very rusty with LOTR ... but is that a conventional use of (limit 1) ... it just seems a little odd.
-
I think the conventional use is actually "limit once per phase."

As discussion on these unbanning's has died thanks in large to calls to 'slow down', we can surmise that no more discussion is forthcoming.
TLHH House Rules should issue this errata
[2] Gondorian Captain [Gondor]
Companion • Man
Strength: 6
Vitality: 3
Knight.
Fellowship: Discard a fortification to remove a threat (limit once per turn)

I would vote against it. The card is now so bad no-one ever would like to play it as there are several cards who work much better, and thus we create a complication (aka unofficial errata) for no reason. If we errata the X-cards, they should do something else then create problems.

Woo0t about,
Discard a Fortification and exert this companion twice to remove 2 threats?

Would anyone have played it without the Base of Mindolluin loop? Its a trash common card. This errata makes it playable, we aren't looking to 'fix' it to make it a worthwhile card. The only solution would be to make it remove 2 threats, but then I am sure I will get calls for it being OP.

Its a trash common card.
If no one would play it, and it's a worthless common, why bother removing it from the X-list anyway?

i agree completely! no one "misses" this card.

Agree it would not help/change/improve the game. This card is useless anyway let it be.
