Can you burn smeagol to grab Gollum culture shadow cards with Saved from the Fire?

You sure can! They share the same culture. Great way to set up Ninja Gollum.

You can also start Gandalf, Leader of Men with some combination of Dwarf Guard and Ordulus, Young Warrior (in Expanded) and Aldred, Eored Soldier and Gondorian Prowler (in Standard) and pull [Dwarven], [Elven], [Rohan], or [Gondor] cards to your heart's delight. I have a deck with Gandalf, Aldred, and the Prowler with 4x Saved From The Fire. I'm usually all set up with at least one of the cultures by the first sanctuary.

I used to really scratch my head when I saw SftF, but now it's one of my favorites. Such a cool card. I hadn't even considered Smeagol before....

Yes, Smeagol/Gollum combo is awesome. The drawback to SftF is that you can only have nine companions in play and in your dead pile... so you might limit yourself quickly. I use it in an Ents/Gollum deck to toast Gandalf LoM, bring him back (Sent Back), and toast Smeagol.

I remember when my friends and I saw the card for the first time we were like "thats so stupid". We didnt give thought to burning unwanted companions! I think one or two of them had some dead pile hate decks going on...

Yep. Another deck I have centers around Gandalf, Sent Back, and SftF. That combo is especially brutal when the next Gandalf you play is Gandalf, Returned...you get a possession at the same time! I wrote a whole article (http://lotrtcgdb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=5162) about that back on CC. Still proud of that one. :)

Which reminds me, if Gil-Estel is reading this, burning Gandalf, Leader of Men and pulling Gandalf, Leader of the Company (plus Sent Back) is also a good way to go. More starting options there.

SFtF opens up so many deckbuilding possibilities... kudos to its designer.

A thought -- is there any reason that SftF couldn't be used with a Hobbit stacked on Treebeard, Earthborn? I know that stacked cards cannot be spotted, and are not "in play," but SftF doesn't seem to be that specific. Hmm...

Stacked cards aren't active ("are not affected by the game") so I don't think SFtF would work in that case. It'd have to say something specific like "place a companion (or a stacked companion)" to override that rule.

Just to back you up socks, stacked cards cannot be spotted unless a card specifically says so like a besieger that says whilst X is stacked besiegers are fierce etc.... And even then its not really "spotting".

The default meaning of SftF, and any card, is "a companion from play". This isnt writted into every card as it is assumed.

Ah, that's good to know. Didn't really think so, but it sounded interesting. :P

I read all! Thanks for the input!

I pulled two and traded them when siege came out because I thought it was dumb. I was kicking myself later. Once everyone knew how good it was I had to trade more to get them back. lol
