Is there a way for the free peoples player to discard (or return to hand) his own companion?
-
There are ways, but they're limited to certain characters/cultures:
Learned Guide, Woolly-Footed Rascal, Slippery Sneak, Hastiest of all Ents - self-discarding
Warmed Up a bit, Life of the Eldar - Discard based on race
WoBaS, Swordthain - self-returning
Make Haste - Return based on race
Plus lots of Smeagol cards discard him. There may be others that I'm forgetting.

Taking the high ground also works. What were you thinking of?

I want to start with a lot of Ents with the help of Merry, In the Bloom of Health and Pippin, In the Bloom of Health. When I need the couple just on Site one. If I can discard them I can play 2 more Ents...
Make Haste seems to be a good card for my plan

Warmed Up a Bit also works great for getting rid of those Hobbits.

Question: When playing 'Taking the high ground' are you limited to just discarding 1 character for +1 archery or can you do 3 or 4 at a time during the archery phase?
-
There is no limit on it, so indeed one at a time.

Interesting, great way to gain more archery.

Where Now the Horse can be used to discard rohan companions. I used it in standard to get rid of Gamling, DOTH after he fetched what I needed. Also nice to reuse Riders of the Mark or Rohirrim Army.

I take it that even tho Frodo gets a +5 boost to his strength you still make sure he loses? I do not have Rohirrim Army need to get that. Do you use Riders of the Mark as sort of a surprise toward the end as a fresh character when many of the other ones you use have been beaten up to some degree?
