Judgement Day is upon us!!! Thought I'd start an election day thread for posting stories and oppinions throughout the day. Even here in England US election fever has taken hold which is wierd because usually we don't get this excited about it. Because its the end of Bush, who is even less popular here than he is in the US, and because of the excitement of the race so far its all anyone is talking about over here. Anyway I just got back from the American Embassy in London where I went with my Dad so he could vote. It was really cool. He voted for Obama (ducks to avoid rotten fruit). I'm going to stay up all night to watch the results come in.
-
Neat. I'd like to point out my midly amusement with this whole election process in the US, I'd expect it to be better by now. Elections here in Brazil are held within a day (no "earlier votes"), from 8 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon, and by 6 o'clock we already have the results.
On to other stuff... GO GO GO OBAMA!
-
i will be so happy when this election is over. and thats about all i have to say about it.
vote Quincy in '08
-
I agree God's will be done on earth as it is in heaven
-
Obama is trash. He is friends with terrorists, he is a socialist, and he wants to tax the #$&*@! out of us. I admit that McCain isn't that much better, but pretty much anyone would be better than Obama.
-
now now now...lets not be partisan ;)
*agrees with centurion*
though personally, I'm hoping for mickey mouse to clean up the write ins and win ;)
-
Obama is trash. He is friends with terrorists[...].
Considering George W. Bush used to be friends with Saddam Hussein and Usama Bin Laden, I fail to see how it's suddenly a problem... ;)
-
=D>
-
And you guys all argue that Bush was terrible. So Obama being like Bush doesn't seem to be that great to me.
-

Why Obama? The guy's a socialist. In other words, spread the wealth around, tell people how to spend their own hard-earned money, etc. I really don't like the man. In America, we value our rights. The guy wants to re-write the Constitution. Political correctness is killing half the 1st amendment, the other half is being used by our wonderful media to print traitorous things about the nation. How about the 2nd amendment? The man has backed every law that restricts our right to keep and bear arms. The 3rd amendment he'll probably respect for the sole reason that he every intention of cut-and-running in Iraq. The 10th will get cut up for the sake of 'hope' and 'change' and big government. More welfare, higher taxes for working people so that those that don't work will get a chance. The problem is, the government shouldn't have the right to spend our money. If it does, we need to follow the founding fathers example and have another revolution. The man supports abortion, the murder of unborn children as well as backing a bill that refuses any aid to a baby who survives an abortion. The man has an abysmal record as a senator and is complete incompetent. Black people vote for him because they can't see past the shade of his skin. Others vote for him because they are mis-informed. Some vote for him because of his charisma. And finally, there are actually some folks who believe all the outrageous things he says.
I have a question for you, Felipe, and all you others who voted/are going to vote/want to vote
for Obama. What do you see in Obama? What is so wonderful about a guy who is best friends with a terrorist? Is it his charisma? His big, wonderful-sounding promises? Or just his hypnotic way of speaking?
Also, you said something about Bush being friends with Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. That, my friend, is hogwash. Friends don't attempt to wipe each other out. Our president has many failings. That is not one of them.
I've posed a huge question, and it's not just aimed at you, Felipe. It's aimed at turin08 as well. I just want to know why you guys think Obama is so wonderful. ;)
-
Ah, but he's not like him at all! Sure, they might have their commonalities, but we all do. However, I think Obama's qualities more than make up for the single flaw of having stuff in common with Bush. ;) What can I say? I'm more than thrilled by the possibility of seeing some change in US politics, specially because it affects other countries directly. Personally, I don't really care for socialism, and there's no way he's gonna implement it there just because HE happens to believe it (Congress will never allow), same happened here with our "beloved" Lula. I say give the guy a chance, and let's see what he cooks up before crucifying him.
And getting back to the Bush issue, yes, friends eventually try to wipe each other out, specially if there's enough money/power/glory involved, unfortunately.
-
Single flaw? Have you read about his policies?
-
Yes. Some of them will simply not be implemented, no matter how bad he wants it. Others, well, I happen to agree with some of them. Adressing GT's comments, I've never been a really huge fan of the US weapons policy. But why the heck are we arguing? It's not like it's gonna change anything, at this point, and not that it would EVER change anything at any given point, I have 0 influence on the elections there, after all. :D
-
and there's no way he's gonna implement it there just because HE happens to believe it (Congress will never allow)
You better believe he will. Congress is in Obama's pocket. Ever since last election the Democrats have have had the majority. They will not dare (nor do they even want to disagree) with Obama. Haven't you seen what the yo-yo proposes? He's gonna blast every right we ever held dear in to oblivion and the senate and the house are going to do this:
=D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>
while he does it. I don't want to give him a chance to wreck this land. I want to see him lose by a landslide. I want people to see the real Barack Obama before it is too late.
-
GT it probably won't happen, but let's hope for impeachment. [-o<
-
Which ALSO won't happen. If you say THAT'S the real Barack Obama, then he won't show himself unless he actually wins, now will he? If he manages to actually try to implement heavy socialism (which is DIFFERENT from, say, Public Healthcare, which I approve) in north america, though, hey, coun't me in for waving impeachment banners!
-
Yes, if he does get in I pray that he gets impeached.
:cop: O0 :cop:
-
what the heck? i thought this thread was for news and stuff about the actual election day. not more flaming of candidates and policy bickering. correct me if i'm wrong turin, but thats what this was set up for.
i think obama is going to win virginia. but we'll see, maybe there are enough redneck counties which will sway the vote. but nobody's banking on that.
-
oh, and the polls close in virginia soon. \:D/

oh well, we can only look forward to the end of the election, and the shattering of this madness!
-
I saw earlier this evening that popular vote was 51% to 48%, Obama leading.
This is gonna be an extremely close race. I foresee massive recounts. And hysteria. Also mass hysteria. ](*,)
-
Ohio has gone democrat which is effectively the nail in Mcain's coffin. No Republican President has ever won without Ohio.
-
No, only 32% of Ohio's votes have been counted so far and McCain is only behind by a few points...
-
Calm down turin.
-
Well I'm watching the bbc coverage which is taking it's results from ABC but also reporting from the other networks and it has been reporting the fall of ohio for over an hour now. It even had a report from the Ohio Republican headquarters where they all looked extremely depressed indeed. I mean just go to the Fox news website which was the first to call it for Obama.
-
yes. it is over.
California is 55 electoral votes which means obama needs approximately 1 other state to win.
-
I thought McCain's concession speech was magnificent. I have huge respect for that man even if I didn't want him to win. His call for everyone to stand behind their President and his stopping of the boos show what great honour he has.
-
yep, hallelujah, it is over! obama in '08!
-
This is about the stupidest thing the people of this country have ever done. >:(
Oh well. Now I get to sit back and watch the Constitution go down as 'President Obama'
enacts communism starting January 20th.
-
dude... it won't be communism...
go listen to the song "In God We Trust" by Derek Webb.
if you are really a christian, than you ought to never place your hope in men. or horses or chariots. our hope is in the Lord, and Him alone. so just stop slandering obama, and be happy for the people who were for obama.
-mm
-
I guess you could just say I'm frustrated. It's 12:15 A.M. here and Obama just won. I'm not in the mood to be happy
for Obama right about now.
-
wait, you live on the east coast?
wild.
go get some sleep man. and get in a better mood. and tomorrow we celebrate! break out the champagne! ooo, i just thought: campaign champagne. lol. i should hit the proverbial hay as well.
the election is over, it is late, and god's love endures forever. i'm happy.
-mm
-
It won't be communism, but it absolutely will be a step toward sociaism.
-
Which, depending on WHAT DIRECTION it's taken, might not actually be a bad thing after all. As I said before, Socialism as a system is NEVER gonna work, and I'm not a supporter, but it DOES have its ups, after all, everything has. Let's hope that, if he DOES indeed decide to "take a step towards socialism", he chooses the GOOD stuff from it, which I think he will. Otherwise, my offer still stands, sign me up and give me a banner, I'll march for impeachment!
-
The Israelites lived a sort of Socialism with the law of consecration, but they were God's chosen people being led by His prophet!

Okay. I feel a little better now. It's in God's hands and theres no use worrying about it until 2012.
I'm thoroughly sick of politics though.

after the starting of the war in the iraq in 2003, most of the us-american citizens complained about george w. bush's "fighting the terrorism war". even very patriotic and god-trusting americans started thinking about the question, if bush really represented their wishes, imaginationes... etc. i think i know what im talking about, although i'm from germany. when i was in seattle last year, i saw much "anti bush" stuff, e.g. a calender which counted down his days in gouvernment. if this wasn't a sign.. i don't know what else ;-)
most germans welcome the election of obama, me too. independent to his giant speech in berlin (btw.: this speech wasn't really good...)
oh... i see that your are 14 years old. sorry man, but you aren't able to decide what influence this election hast got to the USA / the world ;-))

I'll just say this. Obama promises change and the change he wants to bring about would violate parts of the Constitution. By communism I mean his plans to turn America socialist by raising taxes and spending more on welfare. Say you make $250,000 a year. Say your NOLINKnext-door neighbor makes $10,000. Under Obama, the more money you make, the more you get taxed. What's the point of working hard if so much of your hard-earned money is being given to someone else? If we go socialist in twenty years we'll look just like Russia after the U.S.S.R. fell. I don't have to be voting age to know the impact of this election. I know you all hate Bush, and he did compromise a lot on some issues, but Iraq, Iraq I think he handled well. Contrary to what our liberal media spouts we are actually doing really well in Iraq. I'll bet though, with Obama at the helm that we'll cut and run and it will turn out just like Vietnam did thirty years ago.
-
Did you hear Obama's speech? I'm only a little bit American and I cried near the end. My Dad was crying from near the beginning. From a foreign approach we like Obama pretty much because he looks like he is going to be a President that actually shows us some respect unlike the last eight years of the Bush Administration trying to bully the rest of the world into submission. I mean the 'special relationship' has been so abused by America over the past eight years that a lot in Britain wish we didn't have it at all. Obama looks and sounds like a man who wants to mend those bridges which Bush burnt down.
-
... I know you all hate Bush, and he did compromise a lot on some issues, but Iraq, Iraq I think he handled well. Contrary to what our liberal media spouts we are actually doing really well in Iraq. don't you know why he gave the advice to attack the iraq?! to fight against the terrorism?! NO - it's because of the oil in north-east / south-west of afrika / asia.
BUT - every one has got his or here own opinion and i respect these opinions. but there are "some" negative facts you can't deny. and because of that i'm a bit angry that a mod of this forum made a censorship on my comment even it wasn't nice what it said - but it's true...
-
Hey, if you think what I said was stupid, that's your opinion. I don't mind, but remember I think what I think for a reason. The facts support that we are winning and to pull out now, in my opinion would be foolish.
-
Personally, I'm almost beyond caring.
I will say this for Obama. He can speak good. And honestly, I don't like the guy, I don't trust him, and I fundamentally disagree with most/all of his policies.
But.
He had a good speech last night. I was sitting there with a cynical smile of half total agreement and half polar opposition to him.
Anyway, that's that for the next four years. I expect that people are going to regret this (though not necessarily until his term(s?) are over) but whatever. I wouldn't have been too happy about McCain, either.
Meanwhile, I'm off to go get my passport renewed, and apply for a Permanent Residence Visa for Canada :P
-
Well...I was at work at 5 and at a victory party until, uh, midnight, after which I did hit the proverbial hay. Hence, I'm just now getting on here.
and there's no way he's gonna implement it there just because HE happens to believe it (Congress will never allow)
That's the way its supposed to work. That's not the way it actually works. The way it works is this.
Supreme Court Justices retire.
Obama appoints Supreme Court Justices, getting a majority on the court.
The Supreme Court is now the sole entity to decide what is a constitutional right and what is unconstitutional.
The Supreme Court makes the laws.
So yeah, Obama is going to have a heyday for the next 4 years. Decisions I foresee...
Gun bans, increased restrictions.
Gay marriage legalized in all 50 states.
All restrictions on abortion declared unconstitutional.
Affirmative Action based on sexual orientation, banning "hate speech" against homosexuals (meaning that churches can no longer preach Scripture that says homosexuality is a sin).
-
I'm thoroughly sick of politics though.
well, yeah, i think we all were expecting you to have a political hang-over. there are a lot of people having that today.
-mm
-
All restrictions on abortion declared unconstitutional.
This is what upsets me the most: Obama is already on record for saying that the first thing he'd do as president is sign the Freedom of Choice Act (Full text (http://www.nrlc.org/foca/FOCA2007S1173.html)). By overriding the states' restrictions and discouragements (for example, parental involvement laws), the estimate is that there would be an additional 125,000 abortions per year (http://www.lifenews.com/nat4359.html), bringing the US close to 1.5 million a year. :'(
-
seriously I am just glad its freakin over. 20 frickin months since they announced candidacy...its insane.
And obama, love him or hate him, that guy can speak...I think he can unite the American people, bring in the good things of social democracy and make us look better worldwide. As for abortion, he can't really make it work, he's not stupid enough to tick off the NRA, and for affirmative action/gay marriage...he and his VP have both said they support civil unions but not gay marriage, so I am not too concerned.
I anticipate greatly what he will do as president.

the Constitution every time they want to.

Truth is a matter of faith, and there's no discussing faith. You might think it's true, but keep offensive comments to yourself, there are ways to say the same things without being directly offensive to a fellow forumer. Be as angry as you like, but just remember that I could, in fact, delete your whole post based on it having an offensive comment in it without even reading it to the end and send you a warning PM, which I didn't so as to preserve your right to express your opinion, WITHIN the boundaries of the rules of the Forum, aka no bashing, no flaming and no name-calling other members.

Heh, that's pretty much what happens here, as well. Can you believe they actually forbid handcuffs for conducting criminals? Because some rich guy was handcuffed, and he said it was bad for his image. Now, policemen all around the country have to JUSTIFY in written the use of a handcuff, or else THEY are punished. :(

Personally, I agree with all of them, in part.
Abortion is a delicate issue here, because we have Public Healthcare and all, but there, I think it'd work just fine. The last part, I agree until it gets to the parenthesis, after all, faith is faith.
And gay marriage, come on, a man and a woman can marry each other and then get to hate their own guts and be miserable for the rest of their lives, why can't two people of the same sex that ACTUALLY DO love each other have the same treatment? Now, I'm not talking about wedding ceremonies, since it deals with faith, and the government can't simply "force" the Church to interpret the Bible differently, but civil union? Why not?

nope. something much more drop-dead-hilarious... ROFL-Bombs...
-

I'm all for civil unions, but opposed to marriage.
Yeah, I know, remembered it later. Unless I'm mistaken, you have Civil Union and Common Law Partnership, right? Or they're the same? If they're not, we use the same word HERE for Civil Union and marriage, although we call it Civil Marriage, and we also have Common Law Partnership, by a different name as well. Did I get it right?
-

Abortion is a delicate issue here, because we have Public Healthcare and all, but there, I think it'd work just fine.
Unless you believe that it is indeed a human life, and thus abortion would be killing another person, with which there are numerous moral, social and ethical problems.
The last part, I agree until it gets to the parenthesis, after all, faith is faith.
Um...ban "hate speech", you ban Scripture. Scripture says homosexuality is sin, and I believe it. If you make "hate speech" illegal, I guess Scripture becomes illegal too, or at least that part of Scripture.
Why not?
Because now we, the taxpayers, are forced to fund a bunch of economic benefits for people we, quite frankly, believe are living in sin. At least a good portion. Then, there's what we call in team policy debate a KRITIK, that is, the whole mindset of recognizing it upsets the balance of society.
-
Well, then, in this case taxes should be divided as those paid by Christians, those paid by Jews and etc, since otherwise, Christian tax money would be funding "sinner" jews. Religion can't interfere in State-related issues. It has its right to be respected, but not to the point where it can legally interfere with how the State handles its own finances. On a related note, then it should be ok for gay people to protest that people that are married but not in love anymore are living in sin, or those who ever had a divorce, so THEY shouldn't receive welfare, either, even if they needed. See my point?
-
I agree FM. I don't agree with many different people's lifestyles, but that doesn't mean they should be cut off from benefits that "regular" people get. The fact that our country does not run that way is one of the things that makes America so great. I don't agree with homosexuality; I believe it is a sin. So is lying, stealing, lust, adultery.
I am of the strong opinion that homosexuals should have civil union rights. Fully the same rights and benefits that married couples have. However it should NOT be called marriage, as marriage is a christian, biblical based principle that is clearly between a man and a woman.
My opinion. :D
-
Which is also endorsed here, but unfortunately, since they use the same word for both (marriage and civil marriage), it's causing a lot of problems, since they can't make it stick, because "marriage", due to its origin, when is not between a man and a woman is considered non-existant.
