Maybe it'd be possible to get a mod lounge? I have a few question on my new unlimited killing powers....
I mean...restricted peacekeeping abilities.
-
Done and done. I've called it "The White Council", and assuming I set it up properly, it should be accessible only to admins and mods.
-
I actually disagree with a mod's forum on principle - I think it's being too exclusive and simply repeating the mistakes of the old Chosen Ones.
If we want to talk to each other, what's wrong with normal boards or PMs?

Somewhat agreed, which is why I didn't originally create one. But it IS helpful for what NB wants it for...clarification of mod duties and responsibilities.
-
I was able to spy on the mod lounge at CC. If this is anything like it, there won't be a problem.
-
I'm kind of worried about over-modding, actually. Like on the deck design forums, I think noting the format is a great idea, but asking folks to state whether it's Free Peoples or Shadows (usually obvious), and even going down to what icons we should use for our posts, is going a bit much, IMO. *feels like the Hobbbits returning to the Shire. o.O*
Just wanted to bring this up earlier than later.
-
Gotta agree, actually.
At some level, anyway. Actually, I feel sorta superfluous, myself. Not that I'm saying I want my modpowers taken away, but how necessary am I really?
Ah, well. We're just getting started off here. We'll have a few stupid administrative mistakes. Overall, I'm surprised things are getting together as smoothly as they are as it is.
Here's to TLHH!
-
A mod Forum IS necessary for that kind of stuff, and it MIGHT be needed if we ever get to someone being reported of abuse, so as to discuss the case and all without creating a fuss on the boards. I know it's a pessimistic point of view, but the reporting function IS there, so we might as well be prepared to use it someday.
-
If there's one thing I've learned about forum communities over the years, it's that eventually, some idiot WILL break onto the scene wanting to stir up trouble..."lamers", as they're usually called. I'm shocked that CC seemed to stay lamer-free for as long as it did...though I ALSO suspect that some type of attack we never saw was responsible for the overuse of resources that led to the site's downfall.
I don't want to have this place over-moderated either, but I think it's safest to have at least one mod per forum so we can catch any potential problems as quickly as possible. Lamers like to bring their buddies along for the ride too, so we need to keep them from ever getting a good foothold. You all know I'm pretty active, but even I'm not around ALL the time.
I've literally lost entire communities to such people before. I do NOT want to go through that again.

yeah it was called mr lurtzy ;)
NB and I did our best too ;)

I believe it is MR. Lurtzy. ;D

I think maybe I didn't explain myself too well the first time, but I meant over-modding as in wanton modding, not too many moderators. Agreed with what you said there!

I noticed that one post got moderated for "spelling." I think it would be best to little things like that pass and only step in when dealing with inappropriate material, moving threads to a correct forum, etc.

Okay, I see the point. Maybe nobody would object to me inserting icons and clarifying titles to keep the area neat?

ah...your no fun...what if i didn't leave any message and just edited it? would that be ok?
-
Well, but the message will still say that you edited the post.
So it's not exactly like you'd sucessfully be "stealth modding."
But then again, how else are we going to teach people how to spell properly?

Have a [steal gold] option next to [give gold], and encourage removal of GP for each spelling mistake (or worthless spam message). Then ban whoever gets to -10 gold! Ha! ;)
Maybe encourage people to use Firefox, since it has a built-in spell check? Many people get used to ignoring the red underlines, though.
-
Wow we are going to ban people for spelling mistakes.
-
that would be awesome! I'd be gone in a week ;) yeah firefox works nicely...but editing for spelling is Fine IMSO, casts light on your bad social life if it is the best thing you can find to do with your time, but still...
-

I might suggest leaving the actual name alone for now (e.g. not changing "Beasterling" to "Easterling Beatdown"), and maybe "Shadows" can be abbreviated to "SH" so that it doesn't seem so cluttered. Just a thought. I'll try to keep my titles in line as well.
As for the edit messages, it was nice being able to edit spelling and grammar in peace on CC without people going "What's his problem?!" *LOL* Except that depending on the changes, they might make posts further down look awkward. "Who are you talking to? Hey, didn't that guy up there say exactly the same thing you did?" Saw that a few times on CC and while it wasn't done maliciously, I had a good laugh or three.
But if "stealth modding" is used, I'd still appreciate it if a quick edit note could be added, because otherwise it'd be like posting in someone else's name. ;)

Lucky, I'd be gone in a few hours. ;D

As far as a private forum for mods/admins, it seems way too exclusive, do to the fact that half of all the members here are mods to begin with, or at least assigned one forum to moderate. Doesn't seem quite fair or necessary.
To address over-modding, this could turn into quite an issue. Wise discernment should be used here, regarding not approaching problems to aggressively.
-
I agree with Celebrimbor. I would vote for the removal of the White Council area.

-
I disagree with the above. Everyone makes such a big deal of things. Stop getting in a stress over a forum. Argh its happening again!
-
LOL too true...just let us be. AP was about as elitist as you could get and you punks never complained.

Actually, I did. If you remember, I left the Chosen Ones because of it!
Thranduil
-
Yeah and then i left cos everyone made a big deal of things on both sides. Just dont start the complaining, nothing is a big deal, then it doesnt escalate from a molehill to a mountain. Its a forum, not a war cabinet for nato.
-
no but he was an elitist mod, not just an elitist period. no one complained bout his modding...aside from lem0n and me and hippo ;) privately

As I explained before, a Mod Lounge IS necessary for the future. If we remove it now and re-create it when trouble actually DOES arrive, we will THEN be stirring up some unnecessary ruckus, since people will argue that the Lounge is being created because someone messed up on the boards, and discussions on who did it will arrive, so on, so forth. I say let the forum be, and after a while, new users won't even know it exists.
-
I think it's necessary for admins/mods to be able to converse without the general board peeking in and discussing their every move. I mean they can always take it to an instant messenger chat, and it's not like we can demand a transcript of their conversation. The mod lounge just happens to be more convenient.
So yes, they probably have secrets... and no we can't join in on any of their fun conversations. But hey, we have the rest of the forum to discuss LotR and have some fun ourselves--what we're here for, right?
-
Good man socks!
-
We actually discuss merely boring, "working" stuff there. Our "fun" discussions are usually reserved to the CoC (we REALLY need a new name for the area...) or the appropriate Board.
-
Yeah. Things like "how do I do <insert mod ability here>?" and explanations of why we moved or split a particular topic and our plans to take over the known universe....
Oh, wait. Scratch that last one.
-
"How do I ban someone?"
"Can I set my account to automatically delete each post by X user as soon as he posts?"
"How do you delete this forum?"
Just stuff like that.
-
Set your sights higher! Post "How do I take over the world?"!
Anyway, just noticed the decks are in their proper child boards now. Thanks, NBarden.
