Title: The Football thread (EPL)
Post by: TheJord on December 26, 2008, 09:29:43 AM
I think we need to dedicate a thread to our national pastime in the UK.

Any predictions? Or comments?

Such as the demise of Arsenal this season, Manchester City becoming the richest club in the world and Liverpool making their first genuine title challenge in 10 years.

Man City? I hope to sense some sarcasm there...they are doing appaling, to say at least. Or is it your fellow brasilian Robinho that makes you say that? Anyway, I think Man U will once again win the title...I just think they have the best balanced team. I hope Van Persie can lead the gunners to a high result, but the past has proven that Arsenal do well during the start of the season, and that they tend to lose their grip in the middle...sigh. But all the top-teams have lost points last weeks, so we'll see....

Well, it just bothers me to see Cristiano Ronaldo winning, I hate that guy! He ACTUALLY said in an interview before the frindly match vs. Brazil 1 month ago or so that his choices for best player in the world, 2nd best and 3rd best would ALL be "him". And then they lost 5-2. :D

Post by: Gil-Estel on December 28, 2008, 08:09:06 AM
Well, a little sarcasm from his side was added in that statement, but I think the case of Christiano Ronaldo proves the quality of the Man U squad. In the Portuguese team he isn't quite as big as he is with Man U. Due to the support of 'his' team he is able to rise above others, because his quality is unquestionable IMHO. There are other good players as well though...I already named Van Persie..:D

You are all forgetting Jimmy Bullard...what a legend

Cristiano is a great player, and I think if he went to Real Madrid his ego would be allowed to engulf the Iberian peninsula; I think Fergie keeps him (mostly) in check.

Well as an Arsenal fan i can't wait to wave goodbye to 2008. At the start of the year we were in all competitions and leading the prem by 8 points.................then everything that could have gone wrong did. Still I can take solace in the fact that as bad as it is to be an Arsenal fan at the moment, its worse to be a Spurs fan.

Not even close to looking forward to it matey.

I got my other worries of my own with my local team Stoke City. Got a season ticket and we got liverpool at home this sat. Crap.

Eventhough Dirk Kuyt plays at Liverpool, I will cheer for Stoke mate. Not a fan of Kuyt, and not of Liverpool somehow. I cannot imagine why people are not all fan of Arsenal? Haven't you seen Bergkamp? I mean....come on!!!!

well... the UK is the "home of football", but there's one question which confuses me, maybe you can help me to answer it: why does the best football league of the world has actually no (really) good goal keeper (like germany has)... ? :D
Title: Re: The Football thread (EPL)
Post by: turin08 on January 08, 2009, 01:19:11 PM
Do you mean good English keepers or good keepers in the English league? Cos there are plenty of good keepers in the league such as Cech, Reina, Given and Freidel. Its not a great time for English keepers at the moment but there are several good young guys coming up like Carson and Hart.

@turin: i thought about ENGLISH goal keepers.

this topic makes me rembering of oliver kahn - the greates goal keeper ever...  :(
Title: Re: The Football thread (EPL)

The greatest ever?....not Kahn...not only was he ugly, but he sure wasn't the best. There have been better goalkeepers. He had personality -not sure whether it was a good one, but I don't know him in person- and that gave him something extra. But I have seen errors that other keepers rarely make....

although this is the wrong thread... kahn was THE BEST. it doesn't matter if you like, dislike or hate him. didn't you watch the WC 2002?! oder CL final 2001 (bayern münchen versus fc valencia)?? he got the "best goal keeper of the world" award four times. i know that e.g. buffon got it 5 times BUT it was buffon, maybe the best goal keeper now a days, who said:
"kahn at it's best (late 90's and early 2000's) was better then all of us at our best's"!!
think about it  ;)

Peter Schmeichel is also a hero, 1 I like better than Kahn.....When I was younger, a kid, I was a goalkeeper myself and I wanted to be Schmeichel, so from early age I already had an eye for extraordinary talent...haha

No I haven't only watched the final....I remember your way to the final, or should I say walk in the parc....man at the start of the tourney it was almost obvious that you would get into the final...no real opponents....:(
Well, maybe I'm a bit frustrated, cause eventhough I carry no hate vs my eastern neighbours what so ever, when it comes to football, well, I can get somewhat emotional..hahaha. Allthough we are better according FIFA rankings.....

Yeah that was shockingly one sided wasn't it. Chelsea just don't look very good at the moment do they. Its all good for me cos now it looks like Arsenal might just be able to catch up with Chelsea and Liverpool dropping points.

LOL. Yeah i reckon schmeichel was better than anyone. Im not really fussed what buffon said, kahn wasnt the best ever. He was great, and ugly but not all time best.

Stupid Chelsea. Wtf are they doing at the moment. Its a good job i had the consolation of watching stoke take the game to liverpool and deserve to win it! Scummy scousers. Take that!

Our chants to gerrard were priceless :D

Woohoo, Stoke all the way. Eventhough City did a very good buy with Nigel de Jong, still they've won. Beattie is a very good player for Stoke I assume.
Btw when it comes to goalkeepers, I thought Edwin van der Sar has a record in the UK, as the keeper that has the longest clean sheet!! He is 4th overall in Europe.

To give a little more spice in here.......BARCA Rules.... and Dida is the best keeper for me   \:D/

Dida surely is amazing. I remember we had 2 different television ads with him here in Brazil, one for a car named Gol (same as "goal" in soccer language), and Dida was sitting in there and everyone screamed "Leave the Gol!" (like when a goalkeeper leave the goal area in a corner kick, for instance, which Dida NEVER does), and another one actually showed Dida SMILING! :D LOL

I seem to remeber a certain incident with Dida when a Celtic fan slapped him and about 5 seconds later Dida acted like he had been knifed!

To be honest as an Arsenal fan its now less of a case of trying to catch Villa for fourth place but trying to catch Chelski for fourth place. They look a lot more likely than Villa to drop points. Not that we're doing a great job of catching anyone at the moment.

Yeah it was lame, we never looked like doing anything good. Downing was hopeless and his selection on the left still mystifies me when hes clearly shite. Shouldve played ashley young who is no doubt one of the finest wingers and most inform in the premiership. And carrick? Gees what a loser, he was wank.

I cant stand heskey but he had a moderately good game but without owen, rooney or defoe we didnt look threatening. Plus they were top draw.
Title: Re: The Football thread (EPL)
Post by: turin08 on February 13, 2009, 03:59:23 AM
Yeah we weren't great but you have to say that we weren't even nearly full strength and Spain were. Plus Spain are a pretty amazing team. I mean their passing and close control in the midfield are superb and they probably have the two best strikers in international football. Plus their defence is solid. Big admirer of Spain.

Have to chuckle when I think normally I wouldnt mind having Barry and Carrick... but then you see Spain have Xavi and Iniesta >:(

Van der Sar was trying to beat the European record for the amount of time without conceding a goal. 9 minutes on the pitch he fumbles the ball and Newcastle score... #-o

Well well well, just watched Ronaldo Nazario getting back to playing once again, he got in at 67:00 minutes, got a few plays, and even managed to serve for a goal, although the ref. stopped the play for a foul that never happened. He's still WAAAAY too slow, and overweight, but it was really nice seeing the crowd cheering for him, even from the other team!
Title: Re: The Football thread (EPL)
Post by: TheJord on March 10, 2009, 04:24:24 PM
Well I just watched Chelsea force their way past Juventus, Liverpool walk over Real Madrid and Bayern Munich DEMOLISH Sporting Lisbon.

As a Man Utd fan I am concerned by Bayern... but then again we beat Roma 7-1 and then lost to Milan.
Title: Re: The Football thread (EPL)
Post by: Gil-Estel on March 11, 2009, 12:35:08 AM
Well, I guess this result means more to Sporting than to Bayern. Bayern are not doing too well in the competition, so I don't think they are the #1 contenders when it comes to winning the CL. I think other teams are better, stronger and more suited to do so. Both Man U and Inter, Liverpool and Chelsea are better than Bayern I think....

Nothing wrong with arsenals result, a draw away from home with an away goal is respectable. Man U screwed up though letting 2 in at home. Snigger.
Title: Re: The Football thread (EPL)

Title: Re: The Football thread (EPL)
Post by: Gil-Estel on April 08, 2009, 07:14:41 AM
I think Man U have enough quality to fix this. They just need to focus. And King, 4 UK teams in the last phase of the Champions League, that is good. I assume Arsenal will make it to the semi-final, as will Man U. Chelsea Liverpool is interesting. I really don't know who is going to win that.

awesome game, rarely seen such great football
I have to tell, that most guys in germany (like me) hate the fc bayern München. They are more than arrogant and not very famous around. I was sooo happy to see them getting kicked #$&*@!
Title: Re: The Football thread (EPL)
Post by: King89 on April 09, 2009, 06:40:20 AM
contratualtiones to all fc bayern munic haters... although barca played a wonderful wonderful football, i'm p**** of that almost every one from germany hates the fcb because they were that succsessful. and, believe it or not, every team in the world which became succsessful over a long periode gets arrogant, even barca will!
Title: Re: The Football thread (EPL)
Post by: lem0nhead on April 09, 2009, 06:54:31 AM
As an impartial outsider, i have to say i had no idea that germany hated Bayern. Id always assumed you would have pride in your supposedly best team.

Though having said that Man Utd are arguably the most succesful team in England and everyone hates them apart from the considerable number of people living down south who "support" them because they win everything.

So i guess maybe i can see where theyre coming from. Has nothing to do with arrogance though. Man Utd arent automatically arrogant because they happen to win everything its just their manager is admittedly a genius but is flawed (and his lapdog second in command, the tool that is Mike Phelan) by his pathetic rants and inability to agree with a cast iron refeering decisions. In fact thats also why everyone hates their best player (and the 2nd best player in the world after messi), Ronaldo; his diving, loser antics and his insisitence that a.) he was fouled when he wasnt and b.) he is terribly injured as a result of said 'offence'.
Plus everyone has to have a team they like to hate especially the more succesful ones who have millions of pounds at their disposal to buy all the best players.

The rest is down to the fact you wont find a single manchester united supporter in manchester, they all support city because they dont 'glory hunt' like a lot of the population of outlying england!

I would like to see Boro survive because I think Southgate has done well with what he has, and the club has always stood by him despite any downturn, unlike most clubs who would have booted him out at the first sign of trouble **Man City**

WBA are surely down already even with their win over sunderland. I really hope the geordies go down, and as much as i would like to see boro down id prefer hull. I HATE hull. Well rather their absolute tosser of a manager and his wanky assistant. Hopefully will be baggies, magpies and the tango man's wankers.

Yup, though it didnt half give me a laugh. First of all fabregas spat on horton, then he spat at horton, then he spat somewhere near horton. LOL. Then he accuses cesc of "entering the pitch dressed inappropriately formal". What a nutter! Since when has congratulating your team mates after the game in a suit been a crime.

Retard.

Not to mention giving your own players a bollocking in front of the fans at half time. I bet that helped his plummet to the drop zone!

Least to say there were some moments we can debate about....Hiddink has shown once more that he is a tactical genious. Where was Messi?...nonetheless they should have decided it during the match. If Drogba made that goal, which should have been a goal, they would have won....

Should have been 3 penalties, simple as that, chelsea stopped barcelona in their tracks and deserved more from that game than a f****n appaling referee.

Gutted, but not at the performance, but the sad officiating of the game.

rather: WHO is messi? (just kidding) but after the match versus real madrid, wasn't he the one who said that barca will overrun chelsea like a steam roll?!... argh! i'm so angry that these arrogant footballers joined the cl final in this way.

What with it being United v Barca the amount of arrogance on show will be huge. I wouldn't be surprised if the match doesn't happen cos all the players are too busy looking at their reflections in the trophy when they walk on.

Wow...incredible. Real Madrid bought Benzema as well....Crazy, crazy, crazy. Well I guess that is the end of the Dutch players, Ruud back to Manchester? ;). Sigh, what a madness....

Wasn't Ruud linked with Villa?  I guess that rumor-mill has shut down.  Is there anyone that Real won't buy?  I was hoping Arsenal would get Benzema and sell Adebayor to Milan.  They need Bergkamp back!!!  Will Barca sell Eto'o to Man City?  So many questions still to be answered, oh the humanity ...

A sad day for the football world.

Did anyone see the foul Adabayor comitted on Van Persie yesterday? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-c4A5UxzrCg
I hope not only FA will react to it, but this seems almost a case for justice. If I do this at the street I will be arrested...what a dude :S

What a way to treat your former teammate.  Inexecusable.  I agree with you Gil, I hope the FA come down hard on him.  If Eduardo gets 2 matches for diving, Adebayor should at least get that much for this deliberate foul.  Perhaps UEFA and FIFA should be looking at this too, but I'm sure they won't.

That wasnt the only thing he did, despite needed banning for 6 months for such a malicious stamp, he also scored and ran the entire length of the pitch to the arsenal fans and celebrated on his knees in front of him. What a complete #$&*@!. The fans were going mental throwing stuff and trying to get at him and although this is another sad side of football; the hooliganism, i sympathise with them. if thats not inciting a riot i dont know what is.

I'm an Arsenal fan and you have no idea the hatred that man inspires. He's definately overtaken Ashley Cole as our object of hatred. If I was at the game I don't know if I could have controlled myself any more than those fans. And I'm a really mild mannered person. He'd better get the book thrown at him.

nope, sorry, that is, not me. I can't judge cause I don't know it. I have seen Arsenal play football yesterday the way it is supposed to. Man, they were so awesome. If they could only keep it up for a whole season...sigh

I didn't see them but was following a text transcript as it happened.  Sounds like it was total domination.  Maybe the 2 losses scared them a bit so they're playing better.  I can wish, can't I  :D

I saw Real Madrid dispatch Olympique Marseille yesterday. Awesome game, finished in 7 minutes. 3 goals in 7 minutes, Cristiano Ronaldo after a long pass, incredibly calm as he kicked the ball in; Cristiano Ronaldo, being fouled, resulting in a penalty kick converted by Kaká; Cristiano Ronaldo, after an amazing play between Kaká and Benzema.
