Title: Cost of starting fellowship
Post by: Olorin on January 03, 2009, 12:50:15 AM
Hi everybody,

am I allowed to play following starting fellowship?

•Faramir, Bearer of Quality, Ranger of the White Tree (17S33), Ranger of the White Tree (17S33)

How does the cost reduction works?  ??? which companion costs how much?

You can. One of the Rangers is played first at twilight cost 3, for Faramir is ring-bound. The other Ranger has a reduction of 2 for he does spot an unbound companion of 3, so he costs 1, total of 4 and you're done!

Thank's GE! But as it seems I made a mistake; I meant the following starting:

Random Ringbearer; Starting: •Faramir, Captain of Ithilien, Ranger of the White Tree, Ranger of the White Tree

Hmm, I was thinking, can't this weird Austrian do his maths...hahaha...:D. But now I see your problem. I think you can,...for Faramirs cost is 3.....

I can see where the confusion comes from, Faramir's twilight reduction only appies when you play him, so he is 2 when you play him, but 3 afterwards, so your rangers can spot a 3 twilight comp.

Play Boromir Bearer of Council as the Ring Bearer Then you could play something like Faramir Prince of Ithilien, then Ranger of the white tree and Ranger of the white tree. That should work I think because all Faramir needs to do is spot Boromir to have a reduction of 1, but still 3 for the purpose of the Rangers.

You can have a 9-companion starting fellowship. Faramir, Captain of Gondor, Aragorn, Strider, Madril, Defender of Osgiliath, Halbarad, Ranger of the North, and 4 copies of Ranger of the White Tree.

Wow hard to wrap my head around this one. I have often played Faramir CoG with one other and Strider for free, but never thought about all of this. I know Madril DoO plays for free. but still wrapping my head around the rest.

OK call me Dumb... Faramir and Halbarad make up the 4 while Aragorn and Madril are 0 how does the 4 Rangers of the White Tree fit in they would have to be all 0 and they are not?

Faramir is 3, Aragorn is 0 (1-1), Halbarad is 1 (3-1-1), Madril is 0 (2-2), and the Rangers are 0 (3-2-1).

I am sorry I get the first 4 perfectly, but I still am not seeing how the Rangers of the White Tree are 0. We already established our 4 twilight and two freebees if we are sticking to that order and the 4 Rangers of the White Tree go last what kicks them off to be 0 to start with with Twilight of 3 each.

I understand if you don't want to take the time to explain further, maybe it will hit me at some point, but rest assured I do like the idea anyway.

You're fine. They are -1 from Faramir, and -2 with their own text, spotting Halbarad.

The rangers spot Halbarad for their cost reduction.
