Title: The Ultra Mana-Fix Deck! (Just naya with rhox war-monk xD)
Post by: Yanko Markovic on January 16, 2009, 06:59:31 PM
Ok, built it for the tournament tomorrow at my local mtg shop:

Lands (I know I need the dual ones but they are so expensive!)

10 Forest
2 Plains
2 Mountain
2 Island
4 Jungle Shrine
4 Terramorphic Expanse
-----------------------

Creatures

4 Wild Nacatl
4 Woolly Thoctar
4 Rhox War-Monk
4 Civic Wayfinder
2 Bull Cerodon
2 Mosstodon
-----------------------

Other Spells

4 Soul's Fire
4 Lash Out (Planning on putting Incinerate instead)
4 Gift of the Gargantuan
4 Rampant Growth (Planning on cutting one for some Godsire or something for God's sake)

I've played this deck many times today, I will post the most memorable ones only...

First, lost to an annoying deck that played a huge creature when I was at 23 life and he was at 4... he left me with 1 life ¬¬

Then played against some kind of weird control deck. he countered my 2 cerodons with cryptic and killed my war-monks with evoked shriekmaws... I still won  \:D/ because I had gained a lot of life and killed him with thoctars and wayfinders

Then I lost to a guy that played darksteel colossus for free and, well, you know... he beat me...

Then I won to some guy that never got lands and I killed him with creatures and burn (duh)

AND THE MOST MEMORABLE ONE was a game where there was a guy that played pandemonium, and I was like at 6 or 7 life, he was at 14 or something, he had strong creatures, and I was only getting land after land... finally, I got 2 cerodons and 2 soul's fire. I was going to play the second cerodon for the win when my brother called me by cellphone, and I put my hand face down on the table to answer. He thought I was quitting the game and he started to shuffle up all his cards. I won because he surrendered  :o :hey: ........

Ahhhh... love story-telling  :uh-huh:. Now comment on my deck  :P

This is an Extended deck? It's Standard. Should I move it, or did you forget to list something that makes it Extended?

I will suggest stuff that will probably be out of the price range but anyway...

Cut the Rampant Growth, Gift of the Gargantuan (maybe keep 1 or 2) for some Garruk Wildspeaker and Fertile Ground. Garruk will fix mana and improve your beaters... then hitting them with Soul's Fire on a 7/6 Rhox War Monk and swinging with him... lots of life.

Considering your mad life gain, finding a (B) outlet, ie some of those expensive lands, fixlands, painlands could open up the option of Bitterblossom and Thoughtseize. BUT, I think you should focus on this hyperspeed aggro instead. Maybe Birds of Paradise for turn 2 Rhox War Monk? I also cant see Chameleon Colossus hurting in this deck, perhaps instead of the Cerodon, hes more versatile when attacking/defending, sick combo with Garruk, prot from Black.

Hope that helps

prefer rampant growth any day over fertile ground. also, combos with bloom tender, and gives more card advantage

Anyway, I'm NOT gonna change the Gift. It's the only source of cycling I (and green) can have, and it let's me grab a land AND a creature! It has done so much for me...

For the colossus, bitterblossom, garruk, birds and the lands, they're WAY TOO expensive... although the birds would be NICE in this deck

thanks anyway TheJord.

Fertile Ground IS superior to Rampant in the sense that it has "combo" potential with Garruk, with a pair of Fertile Grounds, for instance, Garruk comes down for free. Other than that, Rampant Growth would be the superior choice, assuming you won't use duals due to their price. I'm surprised not to see a bit more white in the deck, so you can play Oblivion Ring as a removal (dirt cheap card to acquire, btw), cutting down the number of Soul's Fire (which is not a very reliable spell, I'd only play 1-2 in such a deck, and to be honest, I'd probably play Blaze over those copies anyway), and allowing for more combinations of (G)(W), giving you access to Kitchen Finks and Wilt-Leaf Cavalier. I'd also consider 2-3 Naya Charms maindecked, the rest on the sideboard.

Hey, I'd also say that Steward of Valeron is awesome in this deck. If you're trying to ramp, Steward of Valeron can let you drop the Bull Cerodon a turn sooner, which, ones Bull Cerodon drops, its usually game in my Naya deck.

If you get Garruk, then run Fertile Ground, otherwise, Rampant Growth is good.

I'll see if I can get some garruks.

Yeah, I like the steward and O-Ring. the cavaliers are good as well.

So true about Blaze.

Gotta get some vivid lands here.

I didn't have a good experience with naya charm... hhmm, you gotta convince me.

I actually don't like Steward in this deck very much, as he's a killable form of acceleration, not to mention it doesn't fixes colors. Vivid Lands, as well, might get in the way more than help, and they don't get you basics, which Terramorphic and the fetchlands do, and which is kind of important, so I think you already lose a bit of tempo, and adding MORE CIP tapped lands would make you lsoe a great deal more, hampering the deck's aggressiveness greatly. However, that being said, I think you might have some trouble playing War Monks, since you have very few islands and ways to get them, so you might need to work on this a bit, or consider losing the Monks altogether (not the optimal choice, though). You could most likely scale back on 1 Gift of the Gargantual for a total of 3, and I think in this deck, with a few expensive spells, Lash Out might be better than Incinerate.
My point about Naya Charm is: Versatility. It's a decent spot-removal (and easier to cast in this deck than Flame Javelin, whch would be the optimal choice at 3 mana), but the other abilites are amazing. It gets you back a Expanse to finish setting up your colors, it gets back a Blaze to help pack things up, it gets you back a goo beater to start over after a Wrath effect or similar, AND it breakes stalemates by allowing you to tap down their creatures to swing ftw (or buys you time by tapping them before they declare attackers). Also, it does all of this at INSTANT speed, making it an EVEN MORE versatile card (not to mention, it does BOTH these last things, tapping them beofre they attack you WHILE clearing the path, and even if they drop creatures to block, YOU will get to untap, burn them, and swing anyway). Convincing enough? ;)
PS: You might consider playing Bant Charm as well, since you are packing the colors.

Convinced.

I don't have trouble about the monks. Everything depends on my starting hand really; I usually get either an expanse or a rampant growth, AND either a monk or a woolly thoctar, so, the optimal play of this deck is: playing the expanse on turn 1 (or the shrine), then on turn 2 a forest and a rampant growth, turn 3 either a monk or a thoctar, depending on what I got first.

The wayfinders are for the late game AND early game, to play the cerodon, or the godsire (took 1 mosstodon out for godsire) and make it for little blockers in early game.

THE big problem I have with this deck, is that I can't get good things for early game. I mean, I got wild nacatl like, 3 games or something, and was like at turn 6, I REALLY need something for turn 1 (or 2, if I don't get rampant growth).

Another problem: Woolly thoctar or Rhox war-monk on turn 3? Forget it. The optimal 3 turns I wrote above happened like 5 times, out of 13 or 14. I don't have any problems at playing them, but I can't get them EARLY. The first 4 turns of this deck are WAY too slow, just mana-fix...

So, some turn-1-drop you can recommend me? To complement wild nacatl, which I NEVER get...

edited: skyshroud ranger? nettle sentinel? they look good.

Nettle Sentinel might look awesome, but it's really not. I'd advise Mogg Fanatic, it IS an awesome one-drop, and for turn two either Steward of Valeron, like NBarden suggested, or MAYBE Knight of Meadowgrain if you can afford the double white. Elvish Warrior is not entirely out there, either, if double green is doable, but not nearly as good. Also, you might consider utility spells, perhaps stuff like Cream of the Crop, or Condemn? Rip-Clan Crasher (or whatever it's called) is another nice two-drop to look at.
