Title: Nirvana.
Post by: menace64 on January 17, 2009, 11:59:31 PM
I used to hate music. All music. Through all of elementary school I passionately avoided anything with rhyme, meter or pitch. I guess it was an early form of rebellion since my father was (and always will be) a huge lover of music and a professional singer. I just assumed all music was old, crusty and out of date.

I remember at the onset of sixth grade being invited into my oldest brother's room. He sat me down at his computer and brought up Smells Like Teen Spirit and asked me what I thought of it. I admitted that it was pretty good, despite my inability to understand what the heck the singer was saying.

My brother burned me a mix CD (which, at the time, took a whopping 20 minutes to accomplish) and off I went. That whole year I fell into the Nirvana trap, consuming whatever of it that I could and never looking back. Soon came the rest of the Seattle-based alternative rock bands and their influences like the Pixies.

I couldn't have predicted it then, but Nirvana was the kindling for my musical firestorm. Since that moment over a decade ago I've embraced every element that music has to offer and I've found myself in love with bands that simply escape classical genrefication. I've always held a special honor for what Nirvana did to inspire my journey.

But a sad realization came over me roughly one year ago: I no longer enjoyed listening to Nirvana. I had 'evolved' so much that I'd lost my taste for their sound. It felt like I'd betrayed my oldest friend, kicked them out into the rain, and decided to let my newer, more-polished friends move in with me. I felt horribly guilty.

Tonight, without much in the way of motive, I downloaded their discography. And something is different tonight... it's like my musical-heart is open to them again and Nirvana is, once again, king of music. I can't fathom why, for heaven's sake, I ever turned my back on Nirvana.

So thanks Dave, Krist and Kurt for seriously impacting my life and delivering to my door a precious experience that may never have been otherwise.

Menace...from other posts you've made, it seems that Nirvana is NOT something ya need to listen to right now. That music is flat-out depressing. Do me a favor and check out this song...

And uh...try to ignore the video part of it...haha.

NB, the precious experience of discovery that touched his life is wonderful and respectable. It's not your mission to obstaculate and detain his spiritual growth with your own inmature opinions...

Just kidding

Indeed, I share your opinions NB. I don't know about you, but for me I prefer "merrier" music (NOT pop or tropical-like music, but just merrier), and I find Nirvana a bit depressing. But indeed, their music is just, pppppfffff, INCREDIBLE, man, just great music... it has become a cult-band, and their music is one of the best in their genre, dude, believe me. It's just it's not my taste.

And for menace: Nirvana is cool  ;) Go on, explore other bands, it's great, but I believe Nirvana will be one of those "never to forget" one

Anyway, the main reason I posted here was to annoy NB  ;D

Hope you are annoyed, crying desperately on your bed and calling your mommy...  ;)

Not particularly, actually. I have a little brother, I'm used to annoyance.

Nirvana is a good band, I'm just saying that music can have a tremendous impact of you, and is Nirvana something you want to listen to now? I actually recently had to gut my music playlists of all my Linkin Park stuff because it was making me flat-out depressed (more so than I was already). So...yeah. Take it for what its worth.

That's odd, because I can't remember at any time in my life considering Nirvana's music to be depressing...

Tactless, but probably true, unfortunately.
