As I said, love the idea.

I'm currently based in Manchester but am often in London.

I live in Camberley in Surrey and I have very little travelling ability (I don't drive and don't have a lot of money at the moment.) London would be ideal for me.

So, what is the net result of this discussion? Are we all too lazy/poor to make a commute across the country? My inclination is to say that London or Manchester are the obvious choices.

Manchester: reasonably convenient for me, Thranduil and Lem0n (? My geography is terrible).
London: reasonably convenient for me, Thranduil and Turin.

Any other suggestions? I know of a great place to meet in Manchester - I think the local game shop would be really helpful. I could also probably find a pub in central London if need be.

Let's get this rolling! I haven't played LotR properly for ages.

I would like to join, but I'm way up in Edinburgh.  And I don't know if I would be able to find a babysitter for that long a time.   :(

Would this be on a weekend?  If it were to be in Manchester, would it be far away from the train station (train would probably be quicker than the car)?

You know what would be ideal? That I take my wife on a weekend to London and that you guys would have this tournement then...I would bring a deck....Please keep me up to date

London is a heft commute from scotland for poor old Sm itd take her most of the day get there and no time for a tournament. Manchester is cool with me, Sm there are several stations in Manc and i know the city well enough i can meet you at wherever you get off.

I currently live in London but from September I'll be in Manchester. Plus I go up there reasonably frequently to see my mysterious brother who will remain completely nameless... ;)

The gaming place Anvar is talking about I think is near Manchester Piccadilly.

It's actually really nice, mainly because the IRA blew up most of the city centre in the 90s...

You think Manc is nice? Wow. LOL i guess its ok. Good for shopping GE, you can tell your wife they have at least 2 major retail venues.

Picadilly is usually the station i goto from Stoke. I have a feeling i might know where this place is... Whats the store name. I have played in a Decipher tournament once there and met a decipher employee cant remember his name.

Hhhmmm...I'm actually thinking about doing this, taking a train ride down to Manchester and playing some games with you guys!  When would it be?  A Saturday or Sunday would be best for me, as my babysitter would only be available on those days.
Title: Re: Uk Tournament?
Post by: Anvar on May 29, 2008, 05:00:40 AM
The place I'm thinking of is very near to both Picadilly and Victoria stations in Manchester. Perhaps we should add a poll to this thread with options of Manchester, London, either or other, so we can see what the majority want. If the poll is split, we could always hold two get-togethers.

As for date, I would suggest that a Sunday is best for me, probably in late July or August, but perhaps we can work that out after we have a city chosen.

I was thinking of Fanboy3. Obviously, I'd have to ask them, but unless they have a busy prerelease on the day we want I think they'd be fine (and might even support the event...)

Ok, poll added. I marked it to allow for users to change votes, in case it becomes easier to go to another place than the previously selected one. I also didn't want to let it run forever, since the idea is PROBABLY gathering you guys as soon as possible, so I let it run for 30 days, starting today. Soooo, vote away! :D

Hi,
Now I'm back from Poland I thought I'd bump this thread. So far it looks like a hefty vote for Manchester. If no one else chimes in, we can start considering dates and times.

Anvar
Title: Re: Uk Tournament?
Post by: Anvar on June 11, 2008, 02:18:23 PM
Ok, looks like that's all we're going to get. So with 3 votes for manchester and 3 for either, I propose that our tournament should be !held in Manchester, which I am happy to host/help organise. Looking in my diary, at the moment it looks like the best bet for me would be a weekend in August, preferably either the 3rd or 17th.

If we want to play at Fanboy3 then I need to run dates by the guys there, but since it doesn't look like there will be hordes of us I reckon we'll be alright.

So how does a Sunday in August sound?

Ok, I say that this tournament should go ahead on the 17th of August in Manchester.

I need to check with Fanboy3 to see if they are able/willing to host us. I'm guessing that we'll be maximum 8 players so shouldn't take up that much room.

As to time of day, I would suggest something like 12pm for a 1pm start. That should give people a chance to get there but still give time for playing several rounds and perhaps some friendly games, as well as a chance to draft Magic in the evening (starts at 7pm for those who have the time/money). Let me know if anyone would prefer a later or earlier start, as I'm not sure how far everyone is traveling.

Then we need to decide the format for the tournament. I would suggest using some sort of new standard, where you can use cards from 3 sequential blocks. X-list and R-list from Expanded, sites from Shadows onwards. Again, I'm open to playing straight Standard or Expanded if people prefer. Let me know your thoughts.

I seem to have somewhat taken over the organising of this event, but as I live in Manchester and very much want this to go ahead perhaps I'm justified. Apologies if I've stepped on someone else's toes here (lemon's mainly).

Title: Re: Uk Tournament?
Post by: Anvar on July 19, 2008, 03:41:24 PM
Right then, I have spoken to Fanboy3, and Dave (the owner) sounded really excited about hosting us on the 17th. He's going to advertise it in his monthly e-mail, and says he will try to sort out prize support! All very exciting news I'm sure you will agree.

So now we need to agree time and format.

Again, I suggest 12pm for 1pm start, and 3 sequential blocks with standard sites.

Let's here some opinions from those who are supposed to be coming.

Balls. Four is not exactly a Uk tournament is it? It wanes my enthusiasm slightly. Are all of thes issues, location, time or money problems? Cos we can wait which would resolve the time and money thing....
Title: Re: Uk Tournament?
Post by: Anvar on July 22, 2008, 05:42:51 AM
The main trouble seems to be financial, so I'm not sure how much delaying the tournament would help.

Btw, who are the other people who voted on location?
Title: Re: Uk Tournament?
Post by: Anvar on July 23, 2008, 02:38:36 PM
So here's the deal, the guy who runs Fanboy3 just sent out an e-mail to their whole mailing list with the following excerpt:

Quote
Sunday August 17th
(noon) our first Lord of the Rings TCG tournament in over three years, with promo prizes and boosters for everyone!

I think we should press ahead with only 4 people, as long as everyone concerned is happy to come. More may randomly turn up, and we would all be getting prize support.

Let me know what you think.
Title: Re: Uk Tournament?

Thranduil
Title: Re: Uk Tournament?
Post by: lem0nhead on July 24, 2008, 01:09:36 AM
*Sigh* FOUR? Thats really pants for a "tournament", but i too will come if only to meet the brothers grim and... who is the fourth person?

Also what format? I only have standard decks and im not making an expanded deck as i hate the brokeness potential of some of the combos from expanded and would take me too long to find a good one to make and put it together.

So i can play any sort of draft plus standard...
Title: Re: Uk Tournament?
Post by: Anvar on July 24, 2008, 03:29:15 AM
4th is Turin or TheJord. Hoping that at least one of them will make it. Of course, if they both become definite nos, then we may need to think again.

And I think the format would be standard, but if some randomer turns up with a towers block deck, I don't think we would send him away...
Title: Re: Uk Tournament?
Post by: lem0nhead on July 24, 2008, 03:31:22 AM

Haha its because i was a n00b and gave all my good Elf cards to my friend.... for crappy Gondor cards. The best Shadow deck I have is standard. But my FP would get gobbled pretty quick.

Thats it. I'm coming. I'm going to talk to the wife and explain that I need to be in Manchester on the 17th.

Title: Re: Uk Tournament?
Post by: Anvar on July 24, 2008, 04:37:36 AM
Woohoo! We're on for the 17th then. As for decks, I assume that since we're all nice guys none of us will bring anything stupidly broken or ridiculously powerful (I will be leaving my Forest Nazgul deck at home, for example).

If anyone wants to borrow cards/decks, I am more than happy to lend out. I have a stupid number of decks (around 40, 20 of which are standard), and most power cards from before Hunters block. Let me know if you want to borrow anything.
Title: Re: Uk Tournament?

I dont have any of the stupid decks like ents, forestguls dwarf NPE etc... So have no fear!

I too have a large number of decks but its too many to lug on the train so ill just be bringing a few.

If I can borrow cards to make my Knights standard I will be ok.
Title: Re: Uk Tournament?
Post by: Anvar on July 24, 2008, 04:51:20 AM
OK, so assuming we play standard, with only 4 people we get 2 round contests until we have a clear winner. At an hour per match, a standard tournie can be finished by 3pm.

This would allow for more fun and games afterwards. Some thoughts:
1] Repeat the tournament, changing decks around.
2] Multiplayer free-for-all - all 4 of us play a single game.
3] Sealed deck - I look into finding us some cheap starter decks/booster packs/ages end. Using the cards we build decks and let them loose on each other. If I was going to do this, I would probably ask for some money to cover the cards (then you get to keep them at the end).
4] Draft LotR - I've never done this before and I can see several problems with it (namely having enough minions/companions) especially since EME is so hard to get hold of. My thought would be to do something crazy like each of us start with a box of Ages End (which we keep) and three random packs from the whole range of LotR (depending on what I can get at short notice) and then draft the packs. Again, I would need to ask for some money for the cards, which you would keep.
5] Sealed or Draft as above - but the game itself is multiplayer free-for-all.

Let me know what you fancy, especially since ideas 3-5 would require me buying cards in the next few days (unless anyone has a shop near them that still stocks LotR).

Quick update on the tournament:

1] I met a random guy in the club today who said he was keen to come along. He hasn't played since fellowship of the ring as far as I can tell (or possibly 2 towers(, and so it might be a steep learning curve for him. I said that he would be welcome to join us and we would help him out (I mentioned that he would probably need new sites). I figure that he probably doesn't know anything about the X-list or R-list, but we probably shouldn't complain too much, especially if he doesn't really know any of the cards we'll probably be using. Do you guys agree with me about this issue?

2] I found some ridiculously priced boxes of Ages End, so I bought 6 with the intention of using them as a basis of drafting/sealed. The 6 boxes set me back £30 total, £5 each. I figure that if you want to keep the boxes, pay me the £5. If not, I'll keep them.

3] In addition, Dave, the guy who runs fanboy 3 has ordered 3 booster displays of LotR! One each of Shadows, Black Rider and Bloodlines.  He has suggested that we pay £10 to the shop for the day, use the boosters as we see fit, and at the end of the day we will have split all the boosters! We can use them as prize support, and to draft with.

4] My suggestion then, for maximum entertainment value, is that we draft the boosters - 3 packs each, 1 from each set, with sealed Ages End to complete the decks and build around. Ages End gives ringbearer, ring, 19 FP and 19 Shadow cards. Since draft decks need only be 40 cards big (you reshuffle once), it should be easy to make playable legal decks. The only thing we would need would be sites, which we can always use our main deck sites for, or come prepared with a selection of 9 sites you would want.

5I love draft very very much, and have never drafted LotR at all, and would really love to give it a go. If the rest of you disagree with me, we could do the same thing but sealed with the booster packs. Perhaps Ages End plus 6 packs, 2 from each set, would make a good limited environment, again, with added sites.

Either way, I suggest that you keep what you open and we use the rest of the packs for prize support in the 2 events.

6] I hope we will be able to get at least 6 players, but if there is an odd number, then I will drop out of the main event to allow everyone else to play.

Let's have votes for sealed vs. draft, and then we can think about distribution of prize support.

Oh man I'm so excited... I will follow your lead Anvar on this, I have never attended a tournament before, so I will let the pros handle the decisions.

PS. can someone PM me the directions to the store?

Age's End always gives the same cards? That's kinda of a bummer. Messes up a lot of the draft strategy. Anyway, if I were you guys, I'd draft.

As I'm a tournament n00b can someone let me know the procedure. Will we need to provide decklists, and other tournamenty protocol...?

Actually, with Ages End being fixed, it opens up the possibility of drafting just about every culture! I'll let you know how it goes.

As to tournament procedure, we'll be quite informal about it. No decklists or deck checks or anything like that. I imagine though that we will stick to the rules of timing. From the time you start the game you have an hour to finish. After an hour, you play until the regroup phase. Whoever is ahead on the site path at that point wins. If you're at the same site, the player with the highest resistance ring-bearer wins. This is just useful to make sure we don't run out of time on the day - I don't think we'll be that strict about it if it is obvious that a game is coming to its end.

Apart from that, there isn't much more to say. I'm not a qualified Decipher judge or anything, but I know the rules qute well. Hopefully we'll be able to resolve any rules disputes.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Bring a deck. We'll do standard first.

And what time are we starting?
12pm for 1pm start of play

Can i bring ppl if i can get them to come?
Please do. That would be brilliant.

Total cash required 15£?
If you want to buy Ages End off me. If not, then just £10

Hope that clears things up.

Well, Thranduil and I will certainly be there, and we may yet get some randomers from the club. Hopefully Lemon will make it. But regardless, LotR will be played.

Wow what a tournament. First time I have drafted and it was hilarious. 4 player drafting mayhem. I will wait for Anvar to post the official results.

So a great time was had by all. We were a little thin on the ground, but this meant we all got a lot more packs of cards than we would have done had the rest of you turned up, so that wasn't such a bag thing.

The first round was standard constructed event, with the bizarre result being that the guy who I brought along to make up numbers, and who had only played LotR twice before, ended up winning with a deck he borrowed from me. And both TheJord and I were one card away from shadow kills! The results were:
1] Daniel - 3 Hunters + Uruk Hunters
2] Anvar - Rohan Tokens + [Men] Archery
3] Thranduil - Dwarves + Morc Archery
4] TheJord - Knights + Besiegers

After giving out prize support, we moved on to a draft. Unfortunately, the box of Bloodlines hadn't arrived in the shop, so each of us started with a box of Ages End, and then we drafted 2 packs of Shadows and 2 packs of Black Rider, before playing 4 way multiplayer.

Ages End is great to draft from as it comes with so many great minions and companions, that you don't need much to bolster your deck. Also, Frodo with the Great Ring is a real beast, and ended up taking on Nazgul after Nazgul.

In the end, I tried to double to 9 after losing almost all my companions, and lost my last two under a mass of Nazgul. Daniel was next to make the attempt and died under similar circumstances, leaving Thranduil to move to site 9 under very little threat as TheJord had run out of cards.

End results:
1] Thranduil - Gandalf/[Men]
2] TheJord - Rainbow/[Orc]&[Uruk]
3] Daniel - Rainbow/[Orc]
4] Anvar - Dwarf&Elf/[Uruk]&[Wraith]

Though having said that, we all played lots of Wraiths, Lurtz and the Balrog, we all played Legolas and so on.

So it was lots of fun for all who came. I think we converted Daniel to playing LotR, though he doesn't plan on making his own decks. Also, for £15, those who came received a box of Ages End and the equivalent of half a box of booster packs. Good value in anyone's books.

I am really keen on running this sort of event again in Manchester, but I think I will only do so if people are actually going to show up - 6 players would be much better than 4. I can't guarantee that we'll be able to draft again like we did yesterday (I don't think I'll ever find Ages End as cheap again) some sort of constructed event with a draft would be great fun.

My initial thought would be to try to run an event either in October or early January (I need to hit school holidays as I start teaching in September).

Let me know if there is interest and then we can plan a date.

Anvar

ps. In my packs I pulled a Goblin Hordes, a Cot9R and a foil Foe Hammer! A good day's work.

I pulled a foil Black Lord, Fletcher and Legolas, WE so not too bad. I also drafted the only Dark Approach, thanks to Anvar

I managed to get Witness to History which I really needed for one of my decks! :hey: Also another Foe-hammer to add to my 3.

It's a shame we didn't get Bloodlines though as most of the cards I wanted were from there.

Hopefully next time everyone will come!

I'd def be interested in popping over from N.I sometime if I can find time out from my Masters degree, my own collection is only sets 1-10 but I'm sure someone could lend me a deck/2 for other formats, and I don't mind losing ;D Or maybe i could persuade you all to have a retro day ;) FOTR Block: still the best! But yeah I live near Belfast, so wherever I can fly cheaply to, Manchester's a bit better than London. I'll keep my eyes peeled...glad you guys had fun!

Cave Troll Counsellour I live on the North Wales coast so if you do plan on coming, make it to my house (I live right by a train station, the ferry from Dublin lands in Holyhead not far from me so you can catch a train there). I will drive you the rest of the way. If its in Manchester that is!

Cant wait to do it again.

Since Thranduil is moving to Manchester in September, I don't see any reason to try to gather anywhere else. So Manchester it is. Once september rolls around and I get a sense of where I'm at with my new job, I'll post some dates and see when we can do this again.

And welcome CaveTrollCounsellor! Great to have you onboard.

Thanks  :P

Yep I've done the Holyhead ferry couple of times, that could work, tho 2hrs bus to Dublin + 2hrs Ferry + X hrs drive = I might fly instead! If I can book in advance it shouldn't be too expensive. But thanks for the offer, TJ

Looking forward to it, I might bring my bro, too. He's my real life opponent!
