My wife and I just discovered Euro board games a year or so ago. We started out on Catan, Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride. The current favorite when we have a group get together is Stone Age, but I hope to play my first 4 player game of Power Grid this weekend. I'm trying to work my way up to us playing War of the Ring, although I need to paint the figures first. ;D I'm also looking forward to playing Shadows Over Camelot, El Grande, Pillars of the Earth, Tomb, Talisman 4th Edition, Thebes and Last Night on Earth. I've had those games for awhile, but I have to wait to play them until everyone gets off their Stone Age kick first.
Current Favorites:
1. Kingsburg
2. Formula De
3. Power Grid
4. Stone Age
5. Battue
What are some of your current or all-time favorites?
(I am also going to teach two people how to play LoTR TCG tomorrow)
-
Lotr Risk
War of the ring
Settlers of Catan
Alhambra
Bolt and Thunder
-
I just got the Risk LoTR Trilogy Edition about two weeks ago. I got it for a steal at $22. Of course I haven't had a chance to play it yet. So you like it pretty well?
-
Yes, I like it. Although I had to change some rules...
-
What rule changes did you make? Does it improve the game? I haven't read the rules yet, but if your variant is more fun then I may try it the first time I play.
-
1. Settlers of Catan
2. Cathedral
3. Risk 2210
4. Shadows Over Camelot
5. Ticket to Ride
And has anyone here played the game "Kill Dr. Lucky"? Or with it's expansion "And His Little Dog, too?" It seems intriguing but I want input from anyone thats played it.
-
chess
catan
many versions of risk, lotr and 2210 are the best
strategio
-
lame...
Axis and Allies
Period. No more questions. Ultimate answer has been given, thread locked.
-
Diplomacy rules over all other army/conquest based games. Risk 2210 is awesome. Settlers of Catan is cool.
-
yeah, i haven't played diplomacy yet. but i want to.
chess is probably my favorite because it is pure strategy, there isn't any dice. and it doesn't take 5 days to finish like some games.

There are two versions: the one with the one ring and the normal versions with any lotr rules.
I try to keep it as simple as possible. If you play with the one ring, it is leaving the shire (with fellowship) and approaches Mount Doom every turn. If it reaches the last region on the map, the game is over and the preson with most points wins the game. (You get points for mighty events you played during game etc...)
Although there are cards, like the Balrog, that stop the fellowship, it is really soon over (about 30 - 75 minutes).
The first game is a bit complicated, I think. Maybe you play the first one after the original rules!
My changes:
Do not use the one ring! Otherwise the game is too fast over.
Remove cards, that stop the fellowship. They are now useless.
The person, who is the only one remaining wins the game
--Disadventage: Now it is lasting very long (3-6 hours!)
Now, the interesting things! You can create your own cards, for those you removed!
Swanship of the Galadhrim Play at the start of your skirmish phase. You may cross a river.
The eagles are coming Play at the start of the moving phase.
You may move up to three of your units to another region.
The mirror of Galadriel Play at the start of your turns.
You may look at the top three cards of the event deck. Take one into hand.
Saruman's Power Play at the start of your turn.
You may remove x cards from hand to make each other player remove x cards from
hand.
Sauron's gaze Play at the start of your turn.
You may reveal the top three cards of the territory deck. Remove two unites of the
revealed territories (one must remain).
(and some more, like forearmed ... :uh-huh: )
If the decks have no cards left, you shuffle your discard pile and use it now as deck.

Order of the Stick: Dungeon of Dorukan. Takes forever to play a game, but it's FUN!
-
Thanks for the info Elrohir. I'll take your advice and play with the original rules first. We are having a board game marathon today from around 10:30AM through about 3AM tomorrow morning. I have several LoTR games that I've been eager to play LoTR: The Confrontation Deluxe Edition, Lord of the Rings and Risk Lord of The Rings Trilogy Edition. Hopefully we will get to fit at least one of them in today. I hope to have enough for 2 groups of 4. So far on the schedule.
Group 1
Ticket to Ride
Stone Age
Power Grid
Formula De'
Group 2 (my group)
Lord of the Rings TCG - Teaching a couple of people how to play. We may end up playing this all 15 hours.
Settlers of Catan - I haven't played this in awhile.
Hope to squeeze in:
LOTR Trilogy Edition
Shadows over Camelot
Kingsburg
Also for any one who is interested in board games be sure to check out:

Order of the Stick: Dungeon of Dorukan. Takes forever to play a game, but it's FUN!
I like the artwork! I bought card game called Munchkin that's seems like it would be a simple FUN dungeon crawl type game.
-
Settlers of Cataan. expansions ARE cool, but original is best.
ticket to ride is ok.
LOTR risk is good, but 2210 is better. We play like Elrohir, but without the extra cards.
problem with risk, is if you are doing 3 player it will take forever.
One fun game I started but never finished was Battle of the bulge. I played for something like 3 hours and was scxarcely halfway done, but boy was it fun. The ultimate strategic game.
-
I have several LoTR games that I've been eager to play LoTR: The Confrontation Deluxe Edition, Lord of the Rings and Risk Lord of The Rings Trilogy Edition.
I have to admit that I have not played the Triology risk Edition. Maybe the game last longer with the expansion map of Gondor & Mordor.
Hope you enjoy
-
Oh yeah, Munchkin is awesome. Gotta love the Horny Helmet.

Expansions make the game so much more interesting. Don't know what the expansions are called in English, but by far the best expansion is City's and Knights. It adds so much to the game. You need to develop your city, and defend it at the same time. You can do nasty things to your opponent -which is always nice- and you have a lot of ways to win.
Last Friday I played 6 games of Catan -vacation, a man has got to do something- and won 4 of them, woohoo. Most of the time we play the first two expansions at the same time. so City's and Knights and the one with the boats. We build one board with multiple islands and just play. Most of the time our games last like an hour. Without expansions, we're done within half an hour. Occasionally we play Large Catan, and that is master!! 18 points, sometimes more and a game of at least 2 and an half hour.....
Yeah, Catan is cool........
-
Settlers with both Cities and Knights and Seafarers is pretty epic.
-
and soooo cool
-
I haven't played with the Cities and Knights expansion yet. I have it, but I hardly ever get a chance to play Catan as it is. Most of the games my wife like are fun, but there is not too much direct competition. Catan is a very cutthroat game and I can't just let people win. :)
Last night I did get a chance to introduce two new players to Catan and it went over very well. One of the players declared that it was the best game he has ever played. I didn't do that well in the game I ended up second. I thought I was setup nicely in the beginning with a settlement setting on a brick (value 6) and pretty good values on wood and ore. The problem I had was 6 was only rolled 1 time over the course of the entire game and one of the guys I was playing with didn't get the concept of not trading with the leader of the game. He would give the leader 2 or 3 resources for 1 brick. ??? The leader had a sheep factory (two settlements on a sheep-8 hex) and the sheep port, while no one else seemed to ever have any brick besides the leader due to a brick-9 hex that seemed to be rolled once each round. I knew the game was slipping away early, but I couldn't convince the other player of that fact. He decided that I was just trying to manipulate him, so he started attacking me when he had a knight developement card. ](*,) After the leader had 2 cities built on his sheep hex, the longest road, 2 other settlements (1 on the same sheep hex) and a development card that had been face down for the majority of the game, he decided that we may need to work together. #-o I told him it was too late at that point and there was nothing that could be done. He then realized the error of his ways. =D> Final Score: Winner 10, Me 6 and mr late realization 4.
It was a rowdy game with a whole lot of screaming and finger pointing. Good times. I figure a couple of more games with the basic game and we'll be ready for Cities and Knights. :uh-huh:
-
and if you are my good friend, it will be amazing! Sorry, but I'm a diehard Catan player for over 8 years....and I still love it!
-
I just like basic cataan more. Whats really fun is 4 player with the 5 and six expansion to say, 12-14 points.
I hate seafarers, cities and knights is kewl though.
oh and I think original risk is purty kewl too.
-
No one has mentioned Monopoly... this upsets me greatly
Also are there any Atmosfear (Nightmare in the USA) fans here? Any other VCR/DVD games anyone plays?
-
Catan is the best. My old LotR buddies brought it over about a month ago and I'm addicted. Haven't played any of the expansions, though.

Munhckin is awesome i got a few of the games myself. I saw this weekend in a shop that you can buy a board game of it now, which i wanna get, looks sweet.

Now, I have another favourite game:
Ohne Furcht und Adel [engl: Citadels (strange translation indeed :-k)]
Give it a try and tell me what you think!
Notes:
The German game title, for those English speakers who are curious, means without fear or nobility. While this may seem a meaningless title, you must realize that it is a pun on the German phrase ohne Furcht und Tadel. This phrase is itself a translation of the common French phrase sans peur et sans reproche, which means without fear or reproach. It was said of the French Knight Bayard, 1475-5124, who was evidently fearless and irreproachable in his conduct. Apparently the players in this game are equally fearless but more reproachable and less noble than Le Chevalier de Bayard…
-
I also love Munchkin! I just recently purchased Munchin and expansions 1-7. Mucho fun!
Settlers owns, and I own it! Only really like to play the original and expansion though.
Axis and Allies ANNIVERSARY EDITION! A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. Do yourself a favor and look up pictures of this massive game. It lists at $100 though.
-
A&A at the TOP I love that gameI have the old computer version it is awesome! played for hours and hours when I was younger.

Citadels is awesome! Was there only one "expansion" for it?
-
Just one expansion of Citadels: The dark Lands
-
Settlers of Catan is a lot of fun, if you can find someone to play. Chess doesn't really count as a board game, but I like all the strategy in it.
-
dude... chess is THE board game. its been around for like 7 million years.
-
I know, which is why it is beyond the title of just "board game." It shouldn't be used in the same sentence as anything else. :)
-
oh, well then you may live...

No one has mentioned Monopoly... this upsets me greatly

I still have a copy of Nightmare on VHS...haven't played for a long time....was great fun back in the day....Although....I have to say I really enjoyed an old TCG called: WYVERN.
Does anyone remember this, and if so can you still get it anywhere?!
I don't have any of my cards anymore....it was probably about 12-15 years ago.
-
Chess. I will play that almost any day. Risk is great, also. LOTR Risk, anyone?
-
MAJOR bump, but, anyone knows an online shop that will ship The Settlers of Catan to Brazil? Learned to play the game last week, and it's awesome.
-
Shop (http://www.Spiele-offensive.de)
Original Name of Settlers is "Die Siedler von Catan"
-
What language will it come in, though? I can't really speak German. ;)

English and German for sure, but I bet its available in most major languages.

Agricola....great game, love it!
-
dude... chess is THE board game. its been around for like 7 million years.
And to some it's not just a board game... It's their whole life. Like that Anti-American, Jewish, Anti-Semitic, Neo-Nazi, Icelandic-thrice-times-Chess-Grandmaster-Bobby Fisher. Who recently died, btw.

Agricola....great game, love it!
I just started playing Agricola a week or so ago. Awesome game, but there's never enough time to do what I want to do. :) I get this same feeling when I play Kingsburg, it just seems to end before it's time.
I also played Dominion for the first time last night and I liked it also. It's all about deck building and hand management. I taught my wife to play in less than 5 minutes. I'll throw in a different mix of kingdom cards next time to see how it changes up the game.
Today I purchased:
Alhambra
Puerto Rico
Citadels
La Havre

Go.

It is indeed frustrating to have so many options and so little time to choose. The key strategy is obvious, get as many family members as possibly ASAP! The more actions, the better it is, haha. But that is easier said as done... It reminds me of poker somehow in this way: not difficult to learn, hard to master! But I love it and I'm converting all the people in my surrounding! :D
-
I have never heared of Agricola. Can anyone explain me what it is about? How are the mechanics?
-
You have to maintain your own farm. You get a plate with 15 squares on it. Each square is worth points when you built it. 2 are already taken by your house, with 2 rooms. You can axpand your house, grow grain, vegetables and have some lifestock, such as sheep, pigs and cows.
You start with 2 familymembers, and both of them get one action. The centerboard has all these actionfields from which you can choose actions. The game is devided in rounds, each of them lasts a shorter amount of time. At the end of each round you have to support your family with food.
Then there are a milion ways to gain points and to win the game. It is fun, most definately. Game of the year 2008.
-
Monopoly
LoTR Risk
Chess
I've always wanted to try Axis and Allies too
-
You should its a really great game   =D>
-
I so want the A&A Anniversary Edition
-
I lost track of all the board games I played but here are a few that I really like:
Age of Reinassance
War of the Ring
Junta
Diplomacy
Tide of Iron
and of course much much more....
