On Merry and Pippin, ITBOH it says 'add one to the number of Ents'. What does that mean? ???

The important part is "...you can spot." Good for cards like Ent Draught and Momentous Gathering; even if you don't have any Ents in your fellowship, if you have Merry/Pippin you can still play those. Opens up deck possibilities.

As a caveat, the Hobbits give you Ents to spot, but not Ent companions. So for example, they don't help play Ent Horde, but do double dip for its twilight reduction.

Ok take 2 hypothetical examples of cards

1. Says "to play spot 3 ents".
2. Says "for each ent you spot each companion is strength +1".

If you have merry and pippin out with an ent. You can spot 3 ents even though theres only 1. So in the above cases you would be able to play the first condition and in the second case each companion would be +3 strength.

Ok?

that means, you can, in fact spot 1 or 2 (if both pippin and merry are in ) ents more, than you really have, great for cards, like Leaflock, finglas or every other card, that requires to spot an ent. it is really evil with ent draught, cause you not even need to play ents in the deck, then :) these ents you spot virtually, so you do not need to pay twilight for them if you move, it is just for spotting
