Title: Future of these forums - Speak now or forever hold your peace!
Post by: Kralik on May 05, 2008, 04:10:33 PM
Well, this may seem like a silly question, but I think it's a valid one.

I am still waiting for Conor's response to set up the old CC database. While in this state of flux, I am somewhat reluctant to put much effort into customizing this particular forum since I know it is going to expire anyway. Smileys, themes, plugins, etc all take work that may not be worthwhile. Plus, should I go to the effort in posting helpful stickies (for example, a list of LotR computer programs like SdA/Zorbec's/Lackey) if it's not going to be permanent? What about other posts? (Thranduil is currently asking this about DC's) Deck designs? If restoring CC takes over a week, what should be happening in the meantime?

Now, rest assured that I have full intentions of doing everything I can to get the old CC back. But here's my question: Would it be better to move on with these boards, starting from scratch, and then link to the original CC once it gets working?

Conor said that he was having problems with CC taking over the server's resources and bogging it down, which was the cause of his account being suspended. I have the same host as he does -- who's to say it wouldn't happen again? When I set up the forums here, I chose SMF vs. phpBB because it has a reputation (though debatable) of being more secure. Were problems in CC's outdated phpBB (in Conor's words) "possibly the result of hacker attacks"? I have other accounts via the same hosting that I can't afford to go down with lotrtcgdb.com.

Notice that I now have, for fun, 1000+ posts and 1000+ gold. So editing those numbers is not an issue, and I would be more than willing to tally up the totals for veteran CC users. I'm just looking for some food for thought. Please leave your comments! Whichever forum is not being used will end up being both readable and searchable.

EDIT: Changed post and gold count back to normal. ;)

No, try to get CC back... I don't want to spend forever making another trade list.

I will do everything I can to get the old CC back! But I take your post to mean that once it is up, you wouldn't want to have to cut and paste your old trade list over to a new spot?

Hey, as long as I can get all that stuff back somehow, I'll be happy.  ;)

Well, I just realized there may be a better option. Turns out that SMF has a phpBB2-->SMF converter, so I think it would be safe to plan on developing these forums and then importing the posts from CC once they are ready. Everything would then be in one place! What do y'all think?

One thing to keep in mind is that even though I would have the phpBB database from Conor, it wouldn't include custom mods like the shop, so they would have to be done over again anyway.

Awesome possum. The conversion gets my vote...though I think we should definately incorporate the old CC banner and name into the forums somehow once we're able to get all that data pulled back in. Maybe modify post counts and GP and all to be more reflective of the old CC boards, too. But that's all easy stuff.

So, yes...I vote for the conversion, personally.
Title: Re: Future of these forums

convert it I would say!

I'll ask Conor if he has a backup copy of the graphics. :)

Well I'd say yes for data and no for graphics :D I was never fond of CC's style lol this one looks a lot better IMO. The logo would be OK, tho.

But whatever the deal is, I'm in. Even if it stays as it is now!
Title: Re: Future of these forums
Post by: Hobbit_Pizza on May 06, 2008, 12:51:24 PM
Convert it, import the posts, continue with new mods and fresh ideas as we move along.

Good luck with the conversion/import.

I also like the idea of transfering gold/post counts from the previous forum, but if not then no biggie.

RE: Voting for CC / TLHH

CC as the name/theme doesn't make sense unless you obtain the domain.
I think that TLHH is okay, but the name/theme should be consistant with the lotrtcgdb (or however you plan to integrate the two).
Title: Re: Future of these forums
Post by: DáinIronfoot on May 06, 2008, 01:30:43 PM
The logo is what I meant, not "graphics". :-[ If we can get ahold of it, I may even be able to tweak it a little for the purposes of the new forums.
Title: Re: Future of these forums
Post by: Kralik on May 06, 2008, 04:22:22 PM
HP - I agree that the CC as a name wouldn't make sense without the domain. I'd have to see if Conor wanted to sell it, but even then... I'm not Cobra! As for "the" LotR TCG DB theme... there is none! It's just stark white! Honestly I'm not very creative when it comes to colors and stylesheets, so hopefully another person (you? ;)) could fill that gap.

Dain - "graphics" could include smilies and twilight symbols, no?

I like this new forum layout.  :) I'm happy with having access to our history, while posting here, as long as we get our old gp's and post counts back.  And it would be nice to copy and paste my tradelist over to here.  I've been considering posting my non-mint tradelist here, but I've been procrastinating because it's such a huge task!  I suppose I could post a link to my Mahas page, though.  :-\

Love the new name, like the new forums.  Again just would like access to the old info.  I didn't have much of a post count or anything at CC, but I realize why others would want those numbers back.

So conversion vote here.  Thank you for all your work Kralik!

Captain obvious strikes again. I would NEVER have guessed lol.

But i did like having 4 red stars and savant. Will savant carry over? Being as its largely irrelevant?

What will gold be used for on this site?

Perhaps what we can do is have multiple themes you can choose from--which is already the case, if you check your profile--and have one of them be identical (or at least very close) to the old-school CC layout. Then everyone would be happy, because they could pick the look they wanted.

Sounds good Dain. Id probably be fine with that.

If anyone is artistically gifted and wants to choose a premade theme, here are a few options (http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/). Let me know if you find a good one. H_P might be making one as well. :)

I personally like how clean-looking this format is.  Being able to choose would be really cool.  Alas my "skills of an artist" are not up to the task.

Ive changed my theme to LOTR but most of the icons dont load in the forums. In this thread alone all the buttons like reply or quote etc... had the classic red X where and image hasnt loaded. Any thoughts? The normal theme works...
Title: Re: Future of these forums

The LotR theme is ugly? :P
Title: Re: Future of these forums
Post by: DáinIronfoot on May 07, 2008, 07:09:15 AM
Yeah, I noticed that too, lem0n. I was all excited when I found the theme...until I actually saw it. :P

I'll scour the net when I have time and see what else I can find...and try to figure out how I might be able to recreate something like the old CC theme. Hopefully that will become much easier should Kralik be able to convert its phpBB format to the SMF format we have here. Might do all the work for us.
Title: Re: Future of these forums

If we get a CC theme thats the one id go for without doubt.

Well, the bad news is that the phpBB2 database will not include any graphics or theme settings, since those are all stored in external files. Unless Conor can send me a copy of the base directory, we're sort of stuck. OTOH, you might be able to get some basic color ideas if the Internet Archive has any old copies of CC.

As much as I'd like to play around with themes, I'm starting to get attached to this simple blue layout...and most importantly it works!

I agree with Pizza. I actually sorta like this appearance and layout, the more I use it. It's not exactly the old CC, but then again... it's not CC. If that makes any sense at all.

I think it would be cool to all have custom ranks based on what we love most about the game, or what we are best known for

i.e. Thranduil would have a title to do with DC's, NBarden with broken combos, SoP with spamming, Lurtzy with meaningless spam etc etc
Title: Re: Future of these forums
Post by: Kralik on May 08, 2008, 06:32:55 AM
Dain, do you remember some of the old titles?
We can set it up.
Title: Re: Future of these forums
Post by: DáinIronfoot on May 08, 2008, 07:19:31 AM
Personally, what I'd like is to set up a gold system again where you can purchase things like custom titles and perhaps slightly larger avatars and the like. That would make gold have a real purpose again, whereas at CC it had become all but irrelevant for most of the old-timers, since they'd purchased everything already. Might be difficult to pull off, though, at least automatically. We could certainly do it manually, where users could PM and admin and have us go into the admin panel and do it for their profile, deducting the right amount of gold in the process.

OR perhaps have it so you can set your own title once you get a certain number of posts.

I dunno. Still getting used to what these SMF forums can and can't do.
Title: Re: Future of these forums
Post by: Kralik on May 08, 2008, 08:40:46 AM
You'd have to add a shop mod... on my list of things to do. ;)

Maybe this one (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=65)?

The old shop mod that CC was using for phpBB has been discontinued.

I think we can make things like that free, sure. But other goodies, like custom titles, are perfect for purchasing, methinks. Won't be as expensive as CC, though...some of those took FOREVER to get.

I have a few ideas. Kralik and I can talk about it.

As long as we're putting together a wishlist for the gold system, perhaps some sort of "donation" feature where we can give some amount of our own gold to someone else?
I dunno if that would be too difficult to figure out, though.

Updates: Old CC is now available.
I ran the conversion, and ran into some problems:

1) It does not add to the posts here, but wipes them clean while it copies the other (phpBB) posts.
2) It did not successfully copy all posts, and
3) There were numerous other bugs (for example: it would show 54 pages of posts but all except for page 1 were blank).

I don't think the conversion is going to work.
So, it's back to the original question... ditch THLL and switch? Or leave CC for reference?

Note the following:
-All avatars and smilies are lost
-Special mods (shop mod, etc) are lost
-The original theme is lost or doesn't work with the newest version of phpBB2
-I now know the old version number that Cobra used but will not install it due to security considerations

I could possibly take the old CC, try to fix any database errors, and work on getting it upgraded to phpBB3. However, there is a lot of junk in the database, and all links to cobracards.com are broken, which messes up many things.

Thoughts?

Well, I'm going to be out of town this weekend with no computer access (which is a good thing these-a-days ;)) It would be great if y'all could come to a consensus as to which forum to archive, since the conversion didn't succeed. In the meantime, never think of Dain as a sub-Administrator! I hereby give him full rights to do whatever he deems necessary with or without my permission. The only difference is that he doesn't have access to my webhosting backend. For my future role in CC/TLHH, more likely that not I will be able to do some tech work behind the scenes, but I don't have the time to manage every detail or moderate every post. Dain and mods, keep up the good work!

I agree with the sentiment others have expressed, though I surprise even myself in doing so. I thought I'd want the old CC boards back as they were, but I've found that I actually enjoy the fresh start these forums offer instead.

All the same, it WOULD be nice to be able to log into the old forums and grab info that we need and possibly recreate old threads here (like the listings of cards from all my DC sets). Is that proving to be impossible to figure out and unlock? Would asking Conor to kindly come in and set you up as a proper admin help, perhaps, or is it just horribly FUBAR?

I like the way that we can get things done in these new forums. Not that we didn't in the old ones, but these last days WERE kind of annoying, since we didn't have an Admin anymore. Also, well, WE guys were the ones that made CC awesome, so all we have to do is stick around and... keep being awesome?
Yeah, as for Forum Shops, well, I have a TON of ideas, if we plan on implementing those! :D

Is there a reason you need to be able to log in to get your old posts back? Or were you thinking of PM? I already hacked my way into admin, so that's not a problem. Anyway, login is currently broken but I could fix it.

They go to the top when a person posts.

Well, for me, they don't. But a "new" icon appears next to them.

Unread posts retain the "new" icon even when they're shifted down and to other pages, but if it's not that... maybe take a screenshot of this forum? I expect topics are going to be shifted around, but if someone can compare it right after you post, we can see what's going on.

Oh, THAT mayu be the case, actually... They ARE getting bumped after all, just noticed it.

OK, it seems like the general majority wants to retain TLHH. I'm going to go ahead and unsticky this thread. In the meantime, here are some of my plans for the old CC:

Let me know if there's anything else you'd like to see there. :)

Is there a way of getting the culture/twilight symbols back in the old CC? And is there a way that we can edit posts so that we can copy the source text rather than losing the format and symbols?

Those were the two things I was going to ask, so I'll just second that.

Believe me...I understand how THAT goes.

Take your time, man. Just whenever you can get to it. And again, if I can offer any assistance, let me know.

I'd love to get paid for doing this stuff! Of course, maybe it wouldn't be as fun if I had to do it...

Yeah, making it an actual job DOES suck some of the fun out of stuff, it's true. But you're doing one heck of an excelent job so far, you know!

hold that thought...

Anyways I voted to keep TLHH.  It has gone ( and still is going ) under a big amount of activity. I'd like to keep the original CC up for arcival purposes, and also for all the members who have huge trade lists and obviously don't want to re-type them.

sorry but I am out of the loop.
Is there any chance that we could have things like strategy articles put up over here? where are we gonna put the old posts for CC? I don't really care about post count but I really would like to have the strategy articles back...

Tonight's work on CC:

--Got the old theme working!
--Fixed the login issue. You should now be able to log in to view the members lounge (once again members only) and to edit/view your old posts.
--Added a logo to the top.

Let me know what you think! :)

EDIT: Note that the forum is fully functional, but I would prefer that you post on TLHH unless we all decided en masse to move back to CC. Best to keep everything in one place. Eventually I should be able to put the child board mod / shop mod in place.

The links in the CC archive don't work though... ;)

And Kralik has set me up as an admin there, so I'm working on some of the cosmetic stuff, like getting the culture icons and all working again.

OK, I got a large number of them working, but they seem to use two different formats. They should all point to lotrtcgdb.com, I think, but some will give a not found error. Check it out and let me know what you find. :)

They get the right page, but not the right post. The links I had set to specific posts in a thread just take you to the top of the page.

I'm not really complaining, it's awesome what you've done, but I just thought I'd comment.

That remaining halo around the twilight icons has been driving me crazy! (Yes, I've probably been staring at them more than is healthy... but those DC writers deserve only the best!) The culture icons look fine, though; maybe they used a darker matting...

Anyway, no need to hold back replacing them on my account at least. I don't quite remember what CC's was like, but we could always adjust the contrast and font if needed while keeping the base.

Personally, I'd like these forums to say--they're more visual than the old CC's. But the strat articles and such should go back up, and the CC post count, trade lists and such should migrate here. :D
