The FP side of the [Gollum] culture is (back) underway, so let's finally get to the Shadow side as well.
As I mentioned in the Sméagol thread (http://lotrtcgdb.com/forums/index.php?topic=1628.0), in this set, the FP side of the [Gollum] culture will be larger than the Shadow side (reflecting how Sméagol is more helpful than hurtful for much of The Two Towers), but that doesn't mean the Shadow side will be wimpy by any means. There's plenty of the "NOLINKold villain" in the storyline of TTT, especially the novel version, which takes us all the way up to Shelob and Gollum's ultimate act of villainy in leading poor Frodo to near-certain doom in the spider's den.
Anyway, let's get started with the little gangrel creature himself, shall we? :hey:
[2]•Gollum, Brings Nice Food [Gollum]
Minion
Strength: 5
Vitality: 4
Site: 3
When you play Gollum, you may remove X threats (limit 2) to make his twilight cost -X.
Skirmish: Exert Gollum to make a [Gollum] minion strength +1 (or +2 if skirmishing a Ring-bound companion).
“Gollum withdrew himself, and a green glint flickered under his heavy lids. Almost spider-like he looked now, crouched back on his bent limbs, with his protruding eyes.”
Not too sure about the first part...is it too weak to really make a difference? I considered just removing a threat to make him free, but I thought that would probably be over the top. I'm happy with how the skirmish ability turned out, though. Sort of like Old Villain reimagined...and a little more useful, methinks. Remember, it works for ANY [Gollum] minion....
[2]•Gollum, Hungry Villain [Gollum]
Minion
Strength: 5
Vitality: 4
Site: 3
When you play Gollum, you may wound a Ring-bound companion (or exhaust Sméagol). The Free Peoples player may add a burden or 2 threats to prevent this.
While you can spot 2 burdens or 2 threats, Gollum is strength +1 for each Ring-bound companion you can spot.
“‘Sméagol or Gollum, he won't change his habits in a hurry, I'll warrant.’”
Plain and simple Ring-bound hate, which will be a fun little contrast to Sméagol's Ring-bound boosting. This is especially mean to Sméagol himself, too. So yes, kind of specialized, but at worst at least you can beat up the Ring-bearer a bit.

lem0nhead, Brings Nice Reviews. :) Why would you not let the shadow remove more than 2 threats even if they wanted to waste them. Just as a matter of interest. Id put the parenthesis after -X and say (minimum 0). His skirmish ability isnt amazing. Is he the rare?

Fair enough.

I think I'd rather go for something like "When you play Gollum, you may remove 2 threats to make his twilight cost -2." Or perhaps a simple reduction when you can spot a certain number of threats. Not the most powerful Gollum, but he seems fair enough.

I think I'd still keep him at strength 5. This guys seems powerful if only because he comes into play and wounds the Ring-bearer, which seems fair enough to me. He might be especially good against Bearer of Secrets, though...

I like em both.

Brings Nice Food would seem to me to be more fitting on Smeagol, but it's probably okay. Besides that, I'll echo SoP.
-
Just some NOLINKnasty little events for today. I don't think it will take too long for you smart reviewers to figure out Gollum's overall theme in this set. I guess the overall question is whether any of these are TOO mean....
(0) More Than Bargained For [Gollum]
Event • Skirmish
Spot Gollum (or exert Sméagol) and remove a threat to make a minion strength +3.
“‘He's much more dangerous than he looks.’”
[2] Filthy Little Thieves [Gollum]
Event • Skirmish
Cancel a skirmish involving Gollum to wound the Ring-bearer. The Free Peoples player may make Gollum strength +3 and fierce until the regroup phase to prevent this.
“‘NOLINKWhere are they with my Precious? Curse them! NOLINKWe hates them.’”
[2] More Haste Less Speed [Gollum]
Event • Maneuver
Search.
Discard Gollum to exert each unbound companion. The Free Peoples player may add 2 threats to prevent this.
“‘We musstn't rissk our neck, musst we, precious?’”

“‘He's much more dangerous than he looks.’”
On the contrary, I think this is underpowered. For removing a threat, I could see this spotting Gollum to pump any minion. Doesn't have to, of course, but it could.

Cancel a skirmish involving Gollum to wound the Ring-bearer. The Free Peoples player may make Gollum strength +3 and fierce until the regroup phase to prevent this.

I love this card, very funny.

Search.

“‘We musstn't rissk our neck, musst we, precious?’”
I feel like this could cost less as it's fairly easy to prevent. Then again with Threatening Guide, Plotting... Not sure.

-
ok, I can't remember the canceling rules, in the second card gollums skirmish would be canceled but he'd be 8 and fierce correct? and in the second one, he'd be discarded but would add 2 threats?
and I agree with thran on the first one.
-
Tweaked MTBF...still too weak? Should I go +3/+4?
-
(0) More Than Bargained For [Gollum]
Event • Skirmish
Spot Gollum and remove a threat to make a minion strength +2 (or +3 if that minion is a [Gollum] minion).
“‘He's much more dangerous than he looks.’”
I think it would be ok as a flat +3.
Niiiiice, very cool.

“‘We musstn't rissk our neck, musst we, precious?’”
Sweet as well.

Why don't you give the first Gollum the hunter-keyword... After all he's hunting to get the ring back and to get some fish, rabbits, hobitsses.....
Like the cards... Maybe some extra creatures to? Some giant spiders?

(0) More Than Bargained For [Gollum]
Event • Skirmish
Spot Gollum and remove a threat to make a minion strength +2 (or +3 if that minion is a [Gollum] minion).
“‘He's much more dangerous than he looks.’”
I think it would be ok as a flat +3.
I'm reluctant to do that, lest I overshadow cards like No End of Wickedness, Cunningly Hidden, and Hobbitses Are Dead. If you think it would be okay at a flat +3 when stacked up against those (I'm iffy, personally), then consider it done. Just lemme know....
Hunter is actually not a bad idea, Smeagollum, since this is my set that probably features it the most. :-k I'll have to think more on that. I may go back and tweak one of the Gollums (and probably a Sméagol, too) to include a little of that. Good thought! :gp:
Anyway, new cards! Enjoy!
[2]•Evil Marshes [Gollum]
Condition • Support Area
To play, spot Gollum (or Sméagol).
Each time the fellowship moves to a marsh, add a burden (or 2 burdens if you can spot Gollum or Sméagol). The Free Peoples player may add 2 threats to prevent this.
“‘Careful now, or hobbits go down to join the dead ones and light little candles of their own....’” Yet another way to pile on the burdens and/or threats and NOLINKset up cards like More Than Bargained For and both versions of Gollum himself (especially Hungry Villain). Of course, you need a little sitepath control, which Gollum can already do but which this set will reinforce a bit soon.
[2]•Black Crawling Shape [Gollum]
Condition • Support Area
Each time the fellowship moves to the next site, you may remove a threat to return a [Gollum] minion to its owner's hand.
At the end of each of your Shadow phases, if you cannot spot a [Gollum] minion, discard this condition.
“‘Look at him! Like a nasty crawling spider on a wall.’”
...oh, and to set the table for this card as well. Yes, it might pale a bit in comparison to the awesomeness that is Captured By The Ring, but keep two things in mind: 1.) this doesn't require multiple slots in your precious deck size to work again and again like CbtR does, and 2.) this allows replaying Gollum after a double-move...fully healed, which is just evil when paired with versions like Skulker, Vile Creature, and especially Dark As Darkness. Yowch!

I'm thinking just a flat burden, no option to make it 2.

At the end of the regroup phase, you may remove a threat to return a [Gollum] minion to its owner's hand.
At the end of each of your Shadow phases, if you cannot spot a [Gollum] minion, discard this condition.

fine.

To be honest, I think those are all bad cards that I would not consider using in a deck. +3 on yours seems like I might, but a threat is still a steep cost.

Fair enough. SoP may have a point, I could see it more easily at 1 burden and cost [1].

At the end of each of your Shadow phases, if you cannot spot a [Gollum] minion, discard this condition.
“‘Look at him! Like a nasty crawling spider on a wall.’”
I think you might as well phrase the first line "Each time the fellowship moves to the next site...", but otherwise, a fine card. Perhaps could cost [1].

Going back two updates ago, I went back and tweaked More Than Bargained For. It is now a flat +3 booster, with something completely different thrown in for [Gollum] minions....
-
I know I'm being difficult, but it seems a bit much to me now! :P I think flat +3 with no icing would make a pretty decent card (perhaps you could make it: "Spot Gollum (or exert Sméagol)..." then it could have the chance to do a little bit more).

I'm not sure about evil marshes- would this dc set be used in the same format as evil smelling fens? Besides that, looks good as marshes are uncommon.

Id say 2 burdens if you spot both, or just gollum.

Sound by me, very well thought out.
-
to second what old took said, evil smelling fens plus evil marshes would be a bit much I think.
-
Ah, how could I forget Evil-smelling Fens?! Blast. I'll have to tinker with it a bit, then. Perhaps "moves to a marsh site from a non-marsh site" or something? Or "moves to a site with marsh in its gametext?" What do you think?
While I ponder that, here are some cards for YOU to further ponder. Enjoy!
[2] Our Preciousss [Gollum]
Condition • Support Area
Each time a burden is added, you may exert Gollum twice to add another burden.
Response: If the Ring-bearer puts on The One Ring, spot Gollum and discard this condition to heal Gollum and, if you cannot spot 5 burdens, add a burden.
“‘Sooo bright. Sooo beautiful....’”
Not so much in the [Gollum] culture about making the Ring be worn, but there WAS some back in my The Hobbit-based set Lasting Alliances and will be at least one more such card in my next set The End Of All Things. A good burden adder even outside of that though, don't you think?
(0) A Dark Way [Gollum]
Event • Shadow
Spot Gollum (or Sméagol) to add [1] for each [Gollum] character you can spot and replace a site in the fellowship's current region with a mountain or underground site from your adventure deck.
“‘There’s a path, and some stairs, and then...a tunnel.’”
Sort of a mesh between There's Another Way and Led Astray. Limited to mountains and underground sites, yes, but considering the many [Gollum] cards that key off those sites in Decipher's set and my own, I think that's alright. How about you?
-
[2] Our Preciousss [Gollum]
Condition • Support Area
Each time a burden is added, you may exert Gollum twice to add another burden.
Response: If the Ring-bearer puts on The One Ring, spot Gollum and discard this condition to heal Gollum and add a burden.
“‘Sooo bright. Sooo beautiful....’”
Interesting. I think this needs to be unique for the response action (you could have 4 of them, with a total of, I think, 8 burdens from wearing the ring once due to healing Gollum making the "each time" ability possible again), but other than that is very awesome.
Yeah, seems fine. My only issue is that once you're making a card that is very similar to Led Astray, it might as well be Led Astray.

Niceness, well balanced.

Fine by me.

No issues? Wow. Hey, I ain't complaining.
Time for a little LOTR TCG trivia. How many [Gollum] Shadow cards did Decipher make that can hold [Gollum] tokens? The answer is below...
...give up?
I'll tell you then. The answer is: one. Yes, really. Larder is the ONLY one. Interestingly, Decipher took the time to make a Shadow card ten sets later that reinforces [Gollum] tokens (Enemy In Your Midst), and those two cards have the distinction of being the only Shadow [Gollum] token cards in LOTR TCG.
Surprised? I certainly was. But I bet you will NOT be surprised that I decided to do something about this. And it starts below. Enjoy!
[3]•A Wicked Creature [Gollum]
Condition • Support Area
Each time the fellowship moves, spot 4 [Gollum] cards to add X [Gollum] tokens here, where X is the current region number.
Shadow: Exert Gollum and remove a [Gollum] token from here to add a threat.
Regroup: Exert Gollum and remove a [Gollum] token from here to make the Free Peoples player choose to either add a burden or wound a Ring-bound companion.
“‘Not wholly, perhaps, but NOLINKmalice eats it like a canker, and the evil is growing. He will lead you to no good.’”
Now THAT is a worthy token card, eh? Super-versatile as a burden adder, threat adder, wounder, and double-move discourager...er. Er?
[2]•Wicked, Tricksy, False [Gollum]
Condition • Support Area
Each time a [Gollum] minion wins a skirmish, add a [Gollum] token here.
Skirmish: Remove a [Gollum] token from here to heal a [Gollum] minion. Limit once per skirmish.
Skirmish: Exert a [Gollum] minion and remove a [Gollum] token from here to exert a companion skirmishing Gollum (or wound that companion if he or she is Ring-bound).
“‘Kill him! Kill him! Kill them both. And then we take the precious and we be NOLINKthe master.’”
Here, however, things are a little more clear-cut. Skirmish exerting/wounding is a Gollum staple, and the healing can really make other such cards (or other nasties like Dark As Darkness) REALLY hum along.
I guess I'm in an evil mood today.... Are these TOO good, or just the right blend of balance and viciousness?

Not bad. I like the versatility, but I don't like the complicated token adding clause - I'd love it to be simpler.

I don't think it needs the parentheses - I think it's much clearer and perfectly fine without it.

-
Thrans all over them, IS there anyway to simplify the token adding? I'd make it one requirement or the other.
-
Simplified A Wicked Creature's token adding a bit. Still too much? I wanted it to be tied to moving down the sitepath, signifying how Gollum becomes more and more Gollum-like as the journey goes on....

Like the cards! Nice combo-interaction with Fishingboat (if your opponent plays it that is).
Game Text: Bearer must be Smeagol. When you play Fishing Boat, you may reinforce a [GOLLUM] token. Each time Smeagol is about to be overwhelmed in a skirmish, you may remove 2 [GOLLUM] tokens to make him strength +2 until the end of that skirmish.
So when your opponent plays with Smeag and Fishing boat he can use the shadowtokens as well. Very nice interaction.

Whoops! Good catch.
No new FP [Gollum] cards ready for today, but I DO have some for this thread.
With Mother's Day still close in the rear view mirror, let's dive into one of the few mothers represented in LOTR TCG. Not that her children probably call or send flowers and cards on her special day, since she tends to eat them if they hang around too long.
If you haven't figured out who I'm talking about by now...well, either you've got a MAJOR case of the "Mondays" or had a very, very rough childhood. :P
[6]•Shelob, Dark Terror of Cirith Ungol [Gollum]
Minion • Spider
Strength: 8
Vitality: 8
Site: 8
Enduring. Fierce. Toil 2.
While you can spot threats equal to the number of Ring-bound companions in play, Shelob is damage +1.
Each time Shelob wins a skirmish, you may exert or heal her.
“‘We could let her do it....And then we takes it once they’re dead.’”
I know, I know...Shelob seems to be appearing early, with this being a Two Towers set and all. But keep in mind that in the novel, Frodo and Sam's journey is actually detailed all the way up to Frodo's capture and the Tower of Cirith Ungol, whereas in the film, it cuts off while they're still in Ithilien. Since Decipher tended to follow more along the lines of the film versions in the Fellowship, Tower, and King blocks, I have tended to do the same...but this is a rare exception. After all, Shelob is teased extensively throughout even the film version of The Two Towers. So while most of the Frodo/Sam/Gollum events from Ithilien on will still wait until the next, RotK-based set The End Of All Things, Shelob makes a small bonus appearance here as well.
As for this actual DC, it's a pretty simplistic Shelob. No fancy tricks like Her Ladyship and Menace. Just a nice beatstick version that ties in nicely with the threat and Ring-bound themes Gollum lives for in this set. And with the toil, she obviously pairs especially well with Gollum himself. :uh-huh:
[2]•Torech Ungol [Gollum]
Condition • Support Area
Each [Gollum] minion at a mountain or underground site gains ambush [2] (or ambush [3] if roaming).
Shadow: If the fellowship is in region 3, play Shelob from your hand or discard pile; her twilight cost is -1 for each threat you can spot. Discard this condition.
“‘But there is some dark terror that dwells in the passes above Minas Morgul.’”
Always thought Gollum, Shelob, and ambush seemed like a match made in heaven. Or in...someplace else.
[1]•Dreadful and Perilous [Gollum]
Condition • Support Area
Each time a [Gollum] minion is played, you may discard a tale or stealth card.
“Its name was Cirith Ungol, a name of dreadful rumour. Aragorn could perhaps have told them that name and its significance: Gandalf would have warned them. But they were alone....”
Not much to say here except to remind folks that there are several potent stealth conditions scattered throughout my sets (and over half a dozen in this set alone), so that part might not be as worthless as it appears at first glance. Of course, this already hurts old favorites like A Talent For Not Being Seen and Escape anyway, so maybe I didn't need to say anything at all.

[6]•Shelob, Dark Terror of Cirith Ungol [Gollum]
Minion • Spider
Strength: 8
Vitality: 8
Site: 8
Enduring. Fierce. Toil 2.
While you can spot threats equal to the number of Ring-bound companions in play, Shelob is damage +1.
Each time Shelob wins a skirmish, you may exert or heal her.
“‘We could let her do it....And then we takes it once they’re dead.’”
Toil Shelob is AWESOME (if not especially useful, given there's only 1 guy you can use to toil her)! :gp: But, I don't like the second line - it seems complicated and not especially good or necessary. I would be happy to play her with just enduring, fierce and her winning trigger. What would be really awesome is if she had toil 4 (so generally half her cost), though this is assuming that you only have Gollum as a [Gollum] minion. Or if not, you could just specify Gollum.
[2]•Torech Ungol [Gollum]
Condition • Support Area
While at a mountain or underground site, each [Gollum] minion gains ambush [2] (or ambush [3] if roaming).
Shadow: If the fellowship is in region 3, play Shelob from your hand or discard pile; her twilight cost is -1 for each threat you can spot. Discard this condition.
“‘But there is some dark terror that dwells in the passes above Minas Morgul.’”
I don't think the roaming ability is particularly flavourful, I might take it out. Otherwise, excellent card.

Yeah, fair enough. Probably could be [1].

Hmmm...would really prefer another review or two before moving on....
-
Are there enough ways to pitch cards? I see a lot of conditions which you only want one down, but playing one in a rather large deck would be nearly-suicidal, but I'm afraid there might be no reward for playing more of them, focusing on them.

all fine by me...I reviewed and than was like...wait I can't add anything. meh.

You know, that's an excellent point. :-k I think I'll make a card or two that you can stack other [Gollum] cards on, which would then allow you to do something with extra copies of these unique conditions. How would that be?
Thanks for the reviews, fellas! :gp:
Much like with the Sméagol thread (http://lotrtcgdb.com/forums/index.php?topic=1628.45), today features some skirmish events. These help make for a solid Gollum/Shelob relationship, and might be the last Shelob cards in this set. (Still deciding how much of her to save for the next set, even though the ideas are flowing right now.) Anyway, enjoy!
[4] Cut Off From Light and Regret [Gollum]
Event • Skirmish
Toil 2.
Spot a [Gollum] minion not assigned to a skirmish to have that minion replace a minion skirmishing a companion.
“...in past days he had bowed and worshipped her, and the darkness of her evil will walked through all the ways of his weariness beside him....”
Just so-so with Gollum or Shelob, but combine them, and this is an easy, free way to bounce the two of them around as desired.
[1] We'll Pay Everyone Back! [Gollum]
Event • Skirmish
Make Gollum strength +2 (or +4 if you can spot Shelob).
“‘...when She throws away the bones and the empty garments, we shall find it, we shall get it, the Precious, a reward for poor Sméagol who brings nice food.’”
An It's My Birthday that YOU have control over. Almost a must in any Gollum/Shelob deck, and quite frankly, I can't believe Big D didn't make a simple card like this already.

Awesome! A bit expensive, but I suppose with Shelob you'll definitely be toiling it at least once.

Yeah, very fair and simple. Could cost (0) though.

should it be replace another gollum minion? or just any minion.

I meant it to be any minion...do you think that's too good?
-
I don't really know...it seems like it definitly could be, especially with cards like orc miscreant + bladed gauntlets. That way they survive to use their evil regroup abilities.
on the other hand, that might be precisely what your after...
-
Well, Gollum does already have Controlled By The Ring, so this is just bringing Shelob into the equation.
-
I think it's coll with Spider Poison (or whatever its called) down. Nice little interaction.

Yeesh this could have some complicated affects.
