...The US dollar had roughly 25 times the purchasing power it has now. In other words, a century ago $4.00 had about the purchasing power that $100.00 have now. That also means that a cent was valued as much as a quarter is now. No wonder we've had to mint billions of cents.
Chew on that. :P
