hello all. let me start off by apologizing if this is elsewhere.
im kind of confused on skirmish events and when who can play what. this is what happened last nite during a game with my opponent: i played two stout and sturdy 's and then played a hobbit intuition. my opponent had skirmish gametext (something like black gate sentry), but after playing my hobbit intuition (i was at site 3) i declared the skirmish to be over (or cancelled rather).
could my opponent have played his skirmish gametext after i played my first stout and sturdy ?
if i had just played hobbit intuition and nothing else could my opponent have played his skirmish gametext ?
thanks for any help on the subject.

I believe cancelling a skirmish cancels all effects that happened in it... As long as the skirmish wasn't resolved, no wounds, healing, or other events that happened in the skirmish remain. The companions go back to how they were before the skirmish.
But yes, you take turns activating ablities/events, fellowship first, then shadow, then fellowship again, until you both pass. Then effects are tallied (such as wounds from damage bonuses, then deaths).

Once a skirmish is canceled, no more skirmish actions may be taken. However, you wouldn't undo anything that's happened already.
Optional actions (including playing events and using special abilities) fall under the action procedure. Your opponent gets the chance to use Black Gate Sentry after you've played Stout and Sturdy (or passed).

I don't think that is so. I found nothing in the rules, but I think everything that happened prior to skirmish canceling is not canceled. Skirmish events that modify strength are effective only for the duration of that skirmish phase (unless they say otherwise (Savagery to match their numbers)), but any healing and wounding during the skirmish is not canceled. For example:
Eowyn, LoI is mounted and bearing rohirrim helm. She is skirmishing a minion who has 5 vitality. At the start of skirmish, that minion exerts due to mount. FP exerts Eowyin, LoI for her special ability and SP places 1 wound on his minion (the one skirmishing Eowyn), SP has no action and FP exerts Eowyn again. SP places 2 wounds on his minion. That minion is exhausted. SP has no action and now FP discards Rohirrim Helm to cancel that skirmish. SP cannot prevent that and the skirmish is canceled. No wounds are removed from any character. Both are still exhausted.
A bit late, am I? ;)

You go back and forth with events and special abilities. You would have to cancel first to prevent him from using his special ability.

Yeah, FP and Shadow players take turns taking actions in a skirmish (or any phase actions or responses to a given occurrence). But once the skirmish is canceled, skirmish actions can no longer be taken (though responses to the cancellation can). So once you played Hobbit Intuition, he couldn't take his action, but he should have been given the chance to take his action after the first Stout and Sturdy.
In other words, it should have been:
FP: Stout and Sturdy
Shadow: Black Gate Sentry's ability
FP: Stout and Sturdy
Shadow: Event, special ability, or pass
FP: Hobbit Intuition
---End of skirmish---

This is what it sounds like happened:
FP: Stout and Sturdy
Shadow: Pass
FP: Stout and Sturdy
Shadow: Pass
FP: Hobbit Intuition
Shadow: Whaaaa....?! Black Gate Sentry?
FP: No.
(Or maybe Orc Scouting Band since Hobbit Intuition wouldn't work in the same format as BGS)

*LOL* The Hobbits look like all bark, no bite when the card images are presented like that.
