so i saw avatar today, and i couldn't get over the feeling that its was more of a "hey look what we can do with technology" movie than anything else, the plot was fairly predictable and the best part was the special effects... anyone else thoughts on the movie?
P.S. http://failblog.org/

So think I, I mean, they tried to create something new, but new means in this case...stupid.
-
I wanted to watch Avatar - but if you say it is not that great, I will keep my money. Thank you.
By the way: There is coming soon Avatar - the last airbender. Maybe you want to take a look? http://www.thelastairbendermovie.com/
-
m. night shyamalan is doing the airbender one.
i saw avatar, enjoyed the special effects, enjoyed the 3D, and it was fun to watch. nothing too special in the story.
-
Actually I've to agree with the critics that the 3d and the special effects were sensational, but the story had a lot in common with dances with wolves.
-
I can echo Smeagollum's post. I definitely still recommend seeing it in 3D. The visuals really are THAT good and make it worth a view in the theaters.
-
Totally oftopic, but does anyone remember Tron? Well at last after about 30 years there's a sequel: http://www.apple.com/trailers/disney/tronlegacy/

Not every movie has to have the best story - provided they can back it up in other ways. I think Avatar deserves the box office it is getting compared to say Transformers 2.
I think people are so impressed with the visuals they want the movie to be an overall complete package - but those sort of movies are pretty rare (can't even begin to tell you the last time I was truly blown away by a film - but then it might have something to do with being old and grumpy).

I was totally blown away by Paris Hilton films on youtube...Was a complete package of action, special effects and load's of fun :))))))

Didn't like it that much. My friends were "OMG this is so awesome" but I thought it was nothing new (say, Atlantis and Pocahontas, both Disney). I you want my opinion, I think all the hype for Avatar came actually after the movie was released. I think Cameron actually knows the movie is not that good, but after people saw it and they were "omg the effects are so great and the Na'vi are so cool" he took advantage of that and released a lot of advertising on the visuals and McDonald's stuff and everything he could find.

Actually I think he knows exacttly what he was doing. The average consumer will love this film. It's beautifull, not a to difficult plot and a lot of action. Allthoug i'm a Star wars fan and I love Indiana Jones I must admit that George Lucas did the same with with those films. And that are very populair movies. And look how he took the advantage of it. It actually cost me a fortune as well :(

oh no, i think you should see it, just dont go expecting an amazing film like shawshank... cause the plot is pretty cliched...

Ah, finally people who agree with me. I would definitely recommend to go see the movie, cuz the technology is awesome. But as I said to my friends, in 10-20 years from now, when people are used to the technology, I think people will probably laugh at how high rated the movie is now. The story itself was in my opinion not the biggest problem, but the characters. They were extremely 2-dimensional. I know those films are about good vs evil, but that general was totally off limits in being evil only, not the slightest sense of doubt, inner conflict, what made a film like Lord of the Rings so great (I know, it's not totally fair to compare cuz LOTR had 9 hours to expand on character development). I still enjoyed the film, so as a movie it succeeded, cuz it is a visual medium and the visuals were wonderful.
Looking forward to James Bond in 3D! :D

Looking forward to James Bond in 3D! :D
Or Emanuelle :)
But agree with you totally. The only annoying thing was the under titling (In the Netherlands the films get undertitled). It disrupted the 3d feeling.
can't wait to see The Hobbit I in 3D!

I thought avatar was great....I have yet to see it in 3D, but I might go out tonight with my brother and some of his friends and see it 3D. I'm a 3D Animator myself, and so I love going to 3d films, if nothing else, to just pick apart the graphics and get some pointers. Even in Avatar, there were moments I cringed (ZOMGORZ WHERE'S TEH SPECULAR HIGHLIGHTS?!1!) but overall I was very, very impressed. Maybe that's why I liked it so much...when the story slowed down, I was spending my time analyzing the effects.
meh, maybe that's why I've got no friends of my own and have to go out with my brother's....

Yea, Dutch subtitles sucked! They were everywhere around the screen. Why don't they have cinema's without any subtitles here?

Why are the films in nederlands not dubbed?

Dubbing, that's even worse than subtitles...That's just violating the movie.

I don't really know much about the Nederlands (even though my own last name is Dutch), but I heard, though I'm not pretty sure, that everyone there knows English as a second language and can speak it fluently. Maybe that's why they're not dubbed.
And on to topic, even the visuals and scenarios of Avatar didn't amaze me that much. I'm a fan of prog rock. I've seen a lot of Yes album covers since I was little (Roger Dean anyone?). And sci-fi illustrations from an old page called Gizlivadi.com (hence my name).

That is a funny comparison. Honestly, watching the commercials made me think of what Magic: The Gathering has been doing for years. But you are right. That stuff was on album covers even earlier.
Schindleria Praematurus!

Right! Forgot about Mtg... But I've been a fan of fantasy and sci-fi artwork since I can remember, and probably forgot to mention it. But it's obvious. Mtg has always had those concepts, specially in Mirrodin and Kamigawa, if I'm not mistaken (and Zendikar, of course, but I'm not sure which came first).
And about Yes, some of the covers are just pretty much the same as Avatar's flying mountains and arch-shaped rocks.
-
well, I got to see Avatar in 3D last night, and although it added a bit to the visual experience, it was otherwise...meh.
I hereby dub it...two-and-a-half-D (2.5D). I think 3d viewing could go far, so long as the technology improves. It was kinda cool, but there were some parts of it that ruined the fourth wall for me, for instance, fitting the darn glasses over my own pair comfortably.

FredjeBono = Nederlands?
Why are the films in nederlands not dubbed?
Well only movies for childred get dubbed back here in the netherlands. We're used to it that it get undertitles and it helps you to improve the language skills. But we also do it with German fims; even with Vlemish (Dutch Belgian)! It's because our country has his focus on commerce and trade and perticulair on the trans-Atlantic. We like to be the gate to Europe. So it's in our tradition that we speak our languages.

Beter to steel quality then to create bad one... it seems!

Why are the films in nederlands not dubbed?
because that is sooooo lame. Gandalf speaking German? He once knew every language known to man, but I can't imagine German being one of them, hahaha. Allthough I know that some movies are done pretty good, it ruins every movie for me. On DVD's you can put off subtitles, so that is not a problem.
Is it possible in Germany, Austria to watch the movies original?
-
FredjeBono = Nederlands?
Yes, I am.
And I might hope for all Germans and Austrians that they can watch the original versions. Otherwise I know I'm never gonna live in Germany or Austria.

Aren't you teaching german?

well, they way avatar has been made is absolutely epic! there's no movie that can be compared to avatar's special effects by now. indeed the story is nothing new and nothing special, but only because of the impressions and great pictures it's a must-watch-movie (to my mind).
i left the cinema like... :o

I teach history, societyclasses and religion, so no german....

"Deutsche Sprache, Schwere Sprache"
And when we're on it, you'll never imagine what I'm teaching:
Chess and...................Latin!!!
Yes, there still are people interested in this really strange language, but as once a wise man said, "lingua latina, lingua immortalis".
Didn't everybody of you understand this? Actually about 50% of all English Words come from Latin.

Actually, German dub isn't so bad at all in Movies, but watching animated series like Simpsons in German is just... awful, just listen to Marge...
-
@Gil-Estel: Give at least the French/German Lotr version a try! Usually, you can watch here each movie in its original version (if it is any european language) and obviously always in German.
Maybe you already know: I love languages - and that for, I went into the cinema in Amsterdam to watch any movie in dutch. But they were not dutch :( Although the dutch movies are excellent, they are often made in english/german...
@topic: It seems there are coming part two and three of Avatar soon.
-
i've been thinking they should release an Avatar card game besed on the movie.

Yeah, and you'll have to wear 3D-glasses when you play it ...;)

And there is an evil deck and a good deck and the purpose of the person playing evil is to mill the good to the bottom of their deck where the unubtainium is. That is the only way they can win, otherwise it's a draw.

Ah, Latin, I would love to learn Latin, allthough I can imagine being late with it. I only know some of the one liners, such as Alea Jacta Est, Pecunia non Olet, Luctor et Emergo, but hey, who knows, maybe one day I will....

It's not so difficult at all, you just have to know two things.
1. Vocabulary
2. Verbforms, like the following example:
Present:
voco (I call)
Past Simple:
vocavi
Present Perfect:
vacabo
and so on, and then all these forms also passiv, and then all these active and passiv forms also in Conditional and so, you have hundreds of forms to learn.
But after you've managed that, it's quite simple!
Quamvis sint sub aqua, sub aqua maledicere temptant.
just try to read it!
-
Ego studens latinum.
-
i can speak pig latin...
-
Ego studens latinum.
Very nice PC (participium coniunctum), but I'd prefer somethink like that:
latinum studeo. (you actually don't use "ego", it's all in the endings!
-
Well, I was using the present participle, -ens, which means I/you/he/she/it am/is blah-ing (I am studying), not present indicative, which means I blah (I study).
Who said latin is a dead language? :)

You say present participle instead of "participium coniunctum", don't you?
Seems as you're using different expressions for the same thing when you learn it in a different country...
But I hate those, so I prefer usual forms instead of these stupid participes!
-
oh and of course: cognito ergo sum ;-)
-
I suppose so. Particple forms are great, though, because they require less declining and are less akward in speech.

I'm reading Livius now; one big sentence with about 30+ words and tons of these participles...
The you're gonna hate it!

Okay, so Descartes walks into a bar and orders a beer. He drinks it, lays down the money and gets up to leave. The bartender says "wait a minute, don't you want another one?" Descartes begins to respond "I don't think...." and vanishes.
