Title: Foil % in Two Towers Box
Post by: putridbreath on March 22, 2010, 10:56:38 AM
A friend of mine recently purchased a TTT sealed box and received only four foils:
Sam's Pack ( R )
Stump and Bramble ( U )
Easterling Lieutenant ( C )
Fereveldir, Son of Thandronen ( C )

This is a little low as I think you're supposed to get 1 foil per six packs...I remember reading a discussion about foils and their distribution proportions etc. Hope this adds to the data! Maybe we can gain more statistics regarding this matter...

It is true that on average, you'll pull 1 foil every 6 packs, or 6 per 36 pack box.

Your friend was simply unfortunate to get a 4-foil box. There are 7-foil boxes out there as well, and 5-foil boxes, and maybe even 8-foil boxes.

Heck, there could be a magical box out there with ALL foils!

Magical, indeed. If you get foils at an average rate of 1 foil every 6 packs, the odds of randomly finding a box with all foils are around 1 in 3.46x10720. In other words, in order to find a box that just happened to have all foils, you'd need to buy over 3,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 boxes.

In more concrete terms, if each atom in the universe contained its own subuniverse, and if each atom in those subuniverses contained its own subsubuniverse, and if each atom in those subsubuniverses contained a billion boxes, you probably still wouldn't find a single box containing all foils.

Bottom Line: If you get a box with anything close to all foils, you can be sure that it's a printing/packing error.

Another question was the distribution of foil cards rarity. Will the proportion of foil cards be the same as non-foil in terms of rarity? 1R = 3U = 7C. If so, my friend got lucky with the rarity of the selected foil cards he received.

(On a side note he was disappointed not a single copy of Hides still after two complete boxes)

Usual foils per box:

1 Rare
2 Uncommon
3 Common
6 Foils Total

No hides in two boxes shouldn't bee too suprising.  There are 120 rares in the set right, and 72 rares in two boxes.  Figuring in the likilihood that some of those 72 are going to be doubles and triples of the same card, it doesn't suprise me really.

Way back when FOTR was realeased I bought a pack at the local gaming store we played at that had all foils in it.  It had the correct distribution of C/UC/R, but they were all foil.  The rare was Boromir.

Needless to say the other guys at the game store were just a little jealous!   \:D/

I opened a case of TTT once and I averaged 6-7 foils per box. How could anyone collect a foil set that way????

I stumbled across a lot of FotR and RotEL 12-all-foil-packs that must have been designated as price support by Decipher. Was there something similar for TTT? Because I cannot imagine, how you could collect a set without buying 20-30 CASES of product to even get remotely close to the target.

Buying one of these sets for $500 seems like an obscenely good bargain ;)

i have gotten exactly 6 foils in every booster box (pre-shadows) i have opened, I think that all foil or "god" packs in reflections boosters are one in 2.5 boxes.

I've gotten more foils in ROTK boosters (averaging around 8-9 a box) than any of the others.

I think RotK is the one with the double foil packs, right?

Yes.
