Title: Defender +1
Post by: Silver on April 10, 2010, 02:04:36 PM
If a companion with defender +1 fights against two minions (say: orcs), he'd receive only one wound instead of two as long as they don't overwhelm him, correct?

Now assuming a companion with the defender +1 ability fights against two minions, one of which has the ability damage +1, how many wounds will the companion take (assuming of course, he loses the skirmish but isn't overwhelmed)?

Two minions with no damage bonus is one wound.

If one minion is damage +1, then two wounds.

If both minions are damage +1, then three wounds.

You get the idea.

Two wounds.

Each damage +1 adds an additional wound. So, for example:
A companion who loses to two damage +1 minions (e.g. two Uruk-hai), takes three wounds (1+1+1).
A companion who loses to a damage +2 minion and a minion without a damage bonus (e.g. a Goblin Backstabber and regular goblin), takes three wounds (1+2+0).
A companion who loses to two damage +2 minions (e.g. two Goblin Backstabber s) takes five wounds (1+2+2).

Yes.

So basically the deference between a "normal" companion and a damage +1 companion losing a fight is that you subtract 1 wound from the grand total.

...and if a defender +2 companion is engaging three minions, you subtract 2 wounds from the grand total etc., right?

You add those damage wounds to the total.

The number of minions skirmishing a companion doesn't matter, just the total damage bonus:

Quote
When the winning side in a skirmish phase has one or more characters with the keyword damage +1, then each losing character takes one additional wound for each damage +1. (Damage +2 adds two wounds, and so on.) This is called a damage bonus, which may be added to or removed by various effects.

a companion who is defender + X, and is skirmishing X minions, then loses will only take 1 wound (unless overwhelmed).  If the minions have damage bonuses, then he'll take more.  That is what makes defender so awesome.  Which makes me wonder, if Gorn w/Anduril wins a Defender +1 skirmish, does each minion take 2 wounds, or 1 minon take 1 wound and the second minion take 2 wounds?

*copies the example in the damage bonus entry*

Quote
Aragorn wins a skirmish while facing two Orcs. If Aragorn has damage +1, then each Orc takes two wounds. But if both Orcs have damage +1 and they win the skirmish, then Aragorn takes three wounds instead.

Every losing minion takes the same number of wounds that it would if it was the only minion in the skirmish. So if the winning companion/ally has no damage bonuses, all losing minions will take 1 wound each. If the winner is damage +X all losing minions will take X+1 wounds each. A strong character with both damage and defender bonuses can smash a lot of minions (e.g. a damage +2 Aragorn who beats three 3-vitality [isengard] Orcs will kill them all).
