Title: So, this new guy walks into a bar....
Post by: Mister Wizard. on May 16, 2010, 12:35:04 AM
Dear people (yes, that also encapsulates all you Dwarves, Elves, Orc's and the like  ;)) ,

I hail from the Netherlands, but don't hold that against me.
I'm a twenty-two year old geek-meister with a chronic soft spot for the world created by J.R.R. Tolkien. Recently I have come into possession of several hundred LOTR cards, ranging from the Fellowship to the Bloodlines set. Due to my love for collecting things I have decided to assign a large portion of my free-time-energy into completing the sets I already own.

Because of my Autism I have that well-known  character flaw of wanting to complete collections. I haven't played, and probably never will, having slightly less strategic insight than say, that of a dungbeetle. But I love the cards and the world they represent, so I'm not to be pitied by the die-hard gamers among yourselves..

This post has no other reason or purpose other then introducing myself to fellow collectors and players all over the world. I hope that, in some small way, I can conribute to this forum.

Thank you for reading.

Rick.

P.S. Please excuse my abuse of the English language, but it's not my native tongue.

1052 NP Amsterdam

Sorry people for writing Dutch, but is more comfortable in this case: Just welcomed him and attended him on the active Dutch PG.

Hoi Rick, welkom inderdaad.

I'll continue this in English, because offending anyone, isn't my intention, but I thought to return the favor to my fellow Dutchmen/ladies by writing some of my reply in the native language. I told them of my surprise at finding his game still 'alive' and ' ordinary day life' being a nuisance as well as our railway system.

I have read a lot about the 'schism' in this game, involving the movie blocks and the one that were released after those sets, like Schadows and Bloodlines. Though I'm in this cardboard addiction for the collecting side of it, I'm still curious about what gets played most in the Netherlands. I have a few cards from the later sets, mostly from Shadows, but the main part of my ever-expanding collection is based on the movie releases.
So, in short: Are the later sets worth collecting?

...And the American ducked.

Welcome to the site. Ignore anything past set 10. If you have any of the foils I am looking for (trade list in my signature) I will largely help you complete your collection.

Hi there! I understood everything you said, thus, I can't neither speak nor read Dutch. (I speak German). So, there's no problem for me if you keep on writing like that ;)

As for later sets; it's just for those who really like to spend some money for the game, but if you're able to put some Decks together it's real fun to play. Aber Ket hasst es ;) (Ausserdem macht es mir sehr viel Spass, das Forum auf Deutsch vollzuspamen, da es ausser mir nur zwei drei Leute verstehen. Muahahaha!)

Anyway, if you make a list and post it in the Esgaroth MaArcetplace section, I'll see what I can do for you.

Greetz,

Dominik

Ich glaube dass jeder Holländer deutch reden kann, so dass sind einzige leute mehr des sie verstehen können.....

Worth collecting can be viewed in 2 ways: from the collector's point of view, or the player's one. The collector that is new to the game better sticks to 1-14. Those sets are pretty easy to access, and are very well collectable. To complete Hunters, Rise of Saruman and Treachery and Deceit nowadays is near impossible.
From the player's point of view, well, it depends on playing preferense. I prefer movieblock, or we should make a new block: Bloodlines standard to make a great Aragorn token deck. But if movieblock is your preferred style and in the Netherlands that seems to be the choice, than collect only those sets...

Reden? Schreiben offentsichtlich nicht... schon mal was von Satzstellung gehört? ;)

Sorry, I'm just unfair.

EDIT: Oh, and Bloodlines Standard is also very cool with Rohan and many others, it's one of my favorite formats (after Movie, Fotr Block and Standard of course ;))

I realize I'm late to this conversation, but welcome!  I can't say I speak your language, but your English is excellent, no need to apoligize there!

... I do study Elvish though ... (did I just say that out loud? ;))

I've always wondered why most lotr and meccg players and most meccg sellers are from the Netherlands... No offense, I was just wondering.

Man! Make a guy feel welcome, why don't ya?

Really, quite a few comments made me laugh out loud (which, from an onlooker point of view is pretty scary). It's nice to see so much response to my " Uh......hi!"-post. Thanks all.

The first ten sets really speak more to me, in comparison to the later releases. I'm not in it for any 'investment-qualities' some cards might have, I'm just in it for fun and general enjoyment. For now I'm keeping my efforts focused on completing the Fellowship Block. Deep inside I know I won't be able to get all the cards that are needed for the completion of a set, but I really, really enjoy the hunt. And who knows? Maybe, one day I might.

I'll try to get my haves/wants list up a.s.a.p., but that might take a while.

Again. I'd like to thank all of you for bringing a little more joy to this guy's life.

Fellowship block? I've got tons of cards from that one, so even just with my cards, it should be easy to get about 5/6 of it.

Rick,

Do you also have friends in the neighborhood who are collecting or playing? Or do you know people who did in the past?

Heije,

Maybe time for another Dutch tournament?

actually in basic English, German, Dutch, french and even Russian have the same source; They are all indo-germanic languages, so you should understand bits of them.

... and cus' i also understand latin, even reading Italian texts doesn't cuase much problems for me. Same for Slovakian (from Czechish) and Dutch (from German).

Very easy indeed!

No, all the people I know are miniature-minded (not to be confused with small minded, though) They respect my hobby/obsession, but they wouldn't and will never ever get themselves into he cardboard side of LOTR. Shame, really.

BTW: I'm not an Elf. More of the Dwarfish persuasion, actually, though I do speak English, French, a bit of Russian, some German, Indonesian (heritage, don't ask) and Italian. Let's just say I come fro a line of people who liked to travel and 'move it', so to speak....
