Title: Questions from a returning player
Post by: Toqtamish on May 17, 2010, 11:45:05 AM
Okay haven't played in a long time, I have some cards but looking to pick up more on ebay and return to this game. I figure its cheap and why keep buying new games that cost more. The cards I have are all pretty early cards. I'm looking at buying more from like Two Towers, RotK and maybe Black Rider. I currently have cards from Fellowship and Mines of Moria.

I have been reading some of the threads here and have some questions.

1) what is movie block ?
2) what is WTD format?( i think thats what it was called)
3) with what I have what format should I be looking at ?
4) with what I have what cards should I be buying ?
5) how is the game played nowadays ?
6) whats with these changes of cultures ? something about them becoming combined.

Welcome....

1) movie block is a block that contains cards from the first 10 sets. Fellowship of the Ring, Mines of Moria, Realms of the Elf Lords, Two Towers, Battle of Helms Deep, Ents of Fangorn, Return of the King, Siege of Gondor, Reflections and Mount Doom ( just in case you hadn't it clear which the first 10 sets are)
The sites are taken from the Return of the King block, all sites that have a crown symbol on them. Wow....

2) I don't know, maybe the casual format of one of us here: What did Decipher Think? Decipher made some bad calls, weird designs and this format is about underlining that I guess

3) Not sure what you want, but I guess it is about what format you should be playing, which is of course Movie. Don't listen to weird German speaking dudes here on the boards, especially not when they have names like Olorin or King89, cause they are mental...it is sad, I know

4) You should be buying cards you can play....those are the best. Don't know whether you have people in your area.....that also like to play.....cause that helps too.

3) Again? weird. Well, the game is played not much different than back in the days. Still about tossing the ring, destroying your opponent, running and such. No seriously. We play a lot online, GCCG is the place to be. Most people build decks with all kinds of programms and bring them to GCCG where almost every moment of the day is someone waiting for a game

4) Man, confusing with all the numbers mixed up...just kidding. New cultures suck. Well, they kind a do. All the sweet differences between the different cultures and the things they were good at, kinda got merged and made some überpowered combi's. Wounding Orcs from Mordor all of a sudden could ride Wargs from Isengard, swarming like their inferior cousins from Moria...oh and importing Trolls from heaven knows where :S.....

Well, 'nuff said. Welcome, all questions are welcome, as are all players!

I would say avoid Black Rider and anything past Mount Doom. Focus on Movie Block. Its the best, most fun, and most readily available selection of sets and already fits in with what you have. Hills Wholesale Gaming sells complete sets for $25-45. Plus Category1Games and CCGSingles have great service and prices on singles.

I wouldn't buy anything past set 10. But its up to you.

What is a complete set? 1x every card or 4x every card?

Try all the formats before you make opinions on them. Obviously some people here have a heavy movie block bias, but I would say that both fellowship and hunter's block are superior.

I like the sounds of movie block. I won't get any of the stuff after they did the culture changes, I hate when games do resets like that and it never works, obviously. Same thing happened to Mechwarrior clix.

By fellowship I assume you mean just the first 3 sets ?

I like all formats. But last 3 sets (hunters) is a bit overpowered indeed. The things you can do with those new orcs.. bah.. the most evil of them is the combination of trolls and orc keyward with a warg.. no fun

On the other hand I got a standard fellowshipdeck (based on ages end) which is still unbeaten :)

WDT- What was Decipher Thinking.  It is a format I came up with. It uses sets 11-19 only. There are no x-cards and only a short R-list. It can be found in the casual format.  I made it with the hopes that people would play using the new stuff once in a while.  However, i didn't realize how unpopular the new stuff was.  I'm the only one who ever posted a deck in the WDT format.  It's still there, so if you want to you can always make a WDT deck

Yeah I have none of the newer sets and am mostly looking at getting cards from the earlier sets.

I guess I need to get some Return of the king cards at least for the sites. Not that locally it will mean much difference really.

Download the gccg if you have no one to play with.  There is a link in the Green Dragon Forum.  I put off downloading it for a long time.  Once I finally did, it was incredibly worth it.  The best part is, it is 100% free

what is it exactly ?

awesome. that is what it is.  It is an online way to play the game with people from this website and other places too.  They have actual card images and you can "buy" booster packs to expand your virtual collection.  Of course you don't need the "card" to use it, you can proxy any card you want.  Check it out.  i was very aprehensive about it at first but now i'm a regular to it.  It is way easy to use and very interactive.  totally worth your time if you don't have anyone to play with in your area or you're looking to expand your player base.  it can be found in the green dragon on this website.

We ll it's not unpopulair here in amsterdam.
But we've got periods of playing movie and periods of playing standard. Most my standard decks are based on set 11-19; don't like to play alternate rb that much and I favour hobbits:)
I'll make a deck on gccg soon to play with.

I just wanted to add something about....

No seriously, I must say that I really enjoy playing Standard. When I came back to LotR TCG again, I just hated the new cultures, but now, I just hate the new Uruk culture ;). Standard is really awesome to play, you just have to like, you know, discuss with your opponent before so that nobody will play Forestguls, but besides that, it's very fun to play.

Oh, and btw, I'm one of the German guys... d'oh!

The Wraith Collection and the WETA cards set ? What block would those be considered ?
Title: Re: Questions from a returning player
Post by: legolas3333 on May 20, 2010, 03:35:12 AM
that was a complete waste of a post

The Wraith Collection is standard, expanded and open

WETA cards set (0P56-0P59) are standard, expanded, open, movie
