Matterazi? Aye, if there's one reason that you should love Italy, it would be because of Paolo Maldini.
-
:uh-huh:
-
Scotland! Why? Cos we're fockin Rangers!
You know Scotland didnt qualify cos theyre #$&*@! right?
-
Holland of course. Though we don't know whether Robben will be there, he was injured in the last game before the World Cup, which we won with 6-1. As each year, we are one of the squads able the become the worldchampion. I think only Spain has a stronger team, the others, England, Brasil, Argentina, Holland are the other teams that I would call serious title contenders. But we will see.....
-
Yeah, Scotland was screwed by Henry him self. A beautiful hands goal blew the sad horn for Scotland.....

It's a deadly sin to mistake Scotland for Ireland. As a Rangers fan, I'm an Unionist, not an Irish Republican.

I stand corrected. In my defence, both countries are not part of the Worldcup and even France isn't that interesting. I don't think they will play a great tournament...
-
I guess England, Holland, Spain, France or germany.
-
Germany? Without Ballack? I don't think they'll be very good, maybe "Viertelfinals", but not more, cus' Ballack is the only really good Pro of Germany's team. And France? When they're lucky, maybe...
-
As we say in Holland, since we have a history with Germany, do not ever underestimate the germans. Or, with the words of Lineker: football is a game that lasts 90 minutes and at the end the Germans won. They have a quality that, when the dutch would possess it we would have won the worldcup and eureopean cup many, many times. Begeisterung! The absolute will to work together in order to achieve whatever possible. I hate to admit it, but that seems to be a rare quality. In 1998, 2000, 2004, 2006, 2008, all tournaments where we had the qualities to perform better that we eventually did. And so each tournament we cheer and say this will be the tournament we are going to excell! And so I am
-
Well,
to me the Spain team is sympathic, the Dutch team as well
Italy and France often win games not due to the fact that they were better but because of they were luckier... I hate that circumstance
...about the good ol' Germans: I have to share the wise words of our Abuser of the Force, Gil-Estel:
1.) NEVER underestimate the Germans
2.) they might not have the single-super-heroes, but in a team.... they are able to achieve A LOT!
I think, there will be a few teams without a big name in football who will show their quality... like the US.
-
Brasil to beat Spain in the final. England to go out in the semis. Thats my story and im sticking to it.

I know. That's why I preferably watch games of Germany than of Switzerland. Btw, I hate the Swiss Soccer Team! They are sooooooo bad! I hate every one of them!

I will never fathom the delight you Europeans get from watching 'football'. It's probably the most boring team sport to watch on television, period.
Back and forth, back and forth... oh look they scored, hurrah. Back and forth, back and forth, oh they missed... ](*,) No strategy, no tactics, just back and forth.
Now take American football for instance. It's a freaking chess game of strategy, with plenty of real action. Real men, beating the #$&*@! out of each other. Not a bunch of pansy Europeans.
That's a real sport.

Either that was incredible ignorance, or sarcasm. Could be both.

I actually quite enjoy watching "soccer" (if you don't wanna call it Football, which is actually it's real name), although I know my team will never win, nor it will get too far. But, well, that's how we Chileans are for everything :P And as my History teacher would say when talking about our "virtues": Viva Chile!
-
Just to say: Football (soccer) is becoming the most strategical ever. I mean, look at Inter. They don't have so good players (besides Milito), but they have such a good strategy and tactics. No brutalism, just strategy and tactics ... in opposite to American Football!
Anf just to say: TThis doesn't lead to anywhere. But if you take a look at the whole thing global, the FIFA IS the biggest sport association of the world. FIDE (fédération international d'échècs) is 2nd. Where the American football one reains... I don't know, maybe place 5 or 6?
P.S.: I didn't want to offend anybody, but it's proved that soccer is better that American Football. I mean, you can play Soccer everywhere, with everything. It's so simple, but still complex. I could write books about it.
-
That doesn't prove that soccer is better than american football it's all objective anyway
I think that France wins the world cup :P sparking huge protests in Ireland
a random note I was in Rome when a match began between rome and Milan I think I was in a shopping center and as soon as Rome scored there was this huge cheer from everyone in the building so to say that everyone finds it boring is pretty ignorant
-
Football, is the most popular game in the world. From the streets of Mexico to the 5-star stadiums throughout the world, the game is being played. That alone is enough to prove that football appeals through its strategies, excitement, gameplay, and loads of other factors. It unites the world.
If American Football was that exciting, why does it lose out in terms of popularity to Football? Or media coverage worldwide?
Last thing, football is NOT soccer. It's play with a ball using your foot, hence foot-ball. Unlike American football, where it's played with a inflated bladder nowhere near the shape of a sphere, and neither with your foot as well.
-

Probably a mix of the two with a good-sized dose of stubborn Americanism.
European football is more popular because all you need is a ball. The goals can be easily made, heck I think there was some African village where a bunch of creative teens used a ball of tightly compacted paper and just marked out lines as scoring areas. So European football is much simpler to play. Perhaps that's why its so popular, it's the only sport many kids in other, poorer countries ever play. Witch-King is right in that it can be played anywhere, but that doesn't make it superior to American football.
-
This is a pointless debate. I know both, football better than american football though, and I can say this:
Witchking you are wrong about Inter in the first place. They have Sneijder, Eto, Milito, Maicon, Chivu, all top class players. So they have a very good team with very good players. Second American football is indeed an intelligent game and the more you will watch it, the more you'll appreciate it. Some things in American Football should be implemented in football immediately. One of those things is to call upon a referee judgement.
Door Orc, your name should be limited to Dorc, for being so ignorant. Football is not without strategy, without it you will lose. Not always the best players win, the best strategy is likely to. If we take Witchking's example of Inter, they played Barcalona in the semifinals of the Champions League, which is, essentially a league filled with champions. Barcalona is the #1 team in the world nowadays, with an exeptional number of players. Inter how ever did just the right thing in trying to disrupt the game of Barcalona, ending in the victory for Inter. Another sad but eventhough great example was the quarterfinal at the European Championship in 2008. The Dutch played vs the Russians, and we had a great start of the tournament. Both France and Italy, the reigning worldchampion were beaten. Russia though knew exactly where the weakness of the Dutch was and they took advantage of it. And so they won the game.
American Football is great, but football is bigger. Like Kenddrick says people all over the world are playing it and there should be a reason. And no, the reason is not that the rest of the world is ignorant, boring and inferior to the US ;)
-
You said exactly what I wanted to say Heije, but besides that, when you look at other Teems like Real, they have more and better stars, when you compair Barça or Real with Inter, the Inter players aren't that famous, are they? Besides that, I play Chess on a pretty high level. I'm captain of a Chess Team of the famous ETH Zürich, so if I say something is very strategical, you better believe me. Otherwise, play a chess game against me and I'll show you some strategy and tactics.
And yes, American Football has tactics, but compaired to modern football...
And as for the Dutch.. after Czech Republic lost so badly against Turkey, they were my favorite Team in the Euro 2008, which was here in Switzerland, btw! I was nearly able to get some tickets for France-Italy, the Stadium is about 1 or 2 kilometres away from home.
Just my opinion.
-
germany of course will do it! :D
to my mind other fav's are france, spain, holland, brazil - that's it.
before i forget: i am really really lucky that we talk about football, not soccer. cuz it's F-O-O-T-B-A-L-L. ban that "soccer" from your vocabulary.
-

#$&*@! yeah!
-

Seriously, you seem to underestimate American Football due to its violent character, cause though I might not be the chess superstar, I know both sports and I would say that American Football is the more strategic game of both with many, many varieties in attack, positioning of players etc etc. I recall my first game of American Football and thinking, man this is dull due to the many breaks it had, but the more I saw, and was enlightened by some who knew the game, I grew impressed by the nature of the game.
-
Yes 'Door Orc' is a play on the word 'dork'. Good of you to notice. ;)
I'm just saying, football may be popular in almost every country in the world, but I still find it deathly boring to watch.
Then again, I also think basketball, hockey and NASCAR racing are boring. The only sports I really watch are American football, Horse Racing and Golf.
So don't take anything I say personally.
-
@Wikkie American football is very strategic there are nearly an infinite amount of ways to line up saying that it is not as strategic as soccer is as ignorant as door orcs rant
@king sorry for using the word "soccer" it's just easier for me to distinguish when I'm saying two different words for different sports
-
...about the good ol' Germans: I have to share the wise words of our Abuser of the Force, Gil-Estel:
1.) NEVER underestimate the Germans
I have to agree, we have learned that the hard way in 1945.
By the way, I don't understand why some Americans say that soccer is boring while their national sport is baseball. Maybe that American Football looks like a sport in which there is more action... but that's if you don't consider all the breaks between plays and all the commercials. I'd rather watch some players passing the ball in their area than having to look at commercials during 1/4 of the game.
But anyway, it's just a matter of taste.
-
I think Spain will win this time. They have a very good team and finally their "curse" was broken 2 years ago when they won the European Championship. Spain vs Argentina in the final, that would be awesome [-o< Italy is always dangerous so I tip they will finish third.
For support I like England since they still have some Spurs players after the final cut (when Capello axed Dawson and Huddlestone for his final 23 squad). Problem is the English always think they are the best team so they are a little bit to cocky since they "invented" the game. They are currently ranked 8th in the world. When Sweden didn't make it I have to support Denmark as well.
As for American Football I agree, the more you learn the game the more you appreciate it. It is a very tactial and fun game but to call the players "real men" is just ridiculous, with all the protection they wear ;) Compare them with elite rugby players...
-
Or Australian football, isn't that right MuadDib? Or other Aussies for that matter. Me thinks that real men play Australian Football .
I took a look at the schedule. First of all, bear in mind that every tournament I think we will win :). At least I have some arguments I can bring to the table, other than North Korea, saying that they will be the surprise of the tournament. I also looked in my crystal sphere and these will be the quarter finals and up:
Quarterfinals
2nd july Johannesburg Soccer City (beautiful stadium btw)
France vs England, England will win
2nd July Port Elizabeth Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium
Holland vs Brasil, Holland will win
3rd July Capetown Green Point Stadium
Argentina vs Germany, Germany will win
3rd July Johannesburg Ellis Park
Italy vs Spain, Spain will win
Then we proceed to the semifinals
Semifinals
6th July, Capetown
England vs Holland, Holland will win
7th July, Durban Durdan Stadium
Spain vs Germany, Spain will win
Final of the worldcup 2010
11th July Johannesburg Soccer City
Holland vs Spain, Holland will win!!!!! W00T!
These analysis were made without any feeling of nationalism, it is based on cold hard interpretation of all the facts :D
-
Holland vs Spain, Holland will win!!!!! W00T!
Hehe, actually Holland has a great team, especially now when it seems Robben can play ;D. Van der Vaart, Sneijder, van Bommel, de Jong - these guys are really good midfielders. Kuyt, Babel, Robben and Huntelaar are all amazing forwards. Van Persie is OK as a player I guess but I hate his whining and whimping in Arsenal. A real sissy.
But seriously, you should be a little worried over the defence. What's the name of your goalkeeper? Stekel...something, is he your first choice? And the defenders have passed their prime too, van Bronckhorst and Ooijer anyway - maybe they got their spots on old merits?
I think Sneijder and Robben have been outstanding this season and Holland always plays very entertaining games of attacking football so I hope you go far.
This analysis was totally objective without any bad feelings for the north London team known as ARSEnal :o
-
Haha, Van Persie ok? Van Persie a sissiy? Dude, he is freakin' awesome. The best player of the PL :D. Well, as for England, it seems as if in England there are no goalkeepers at all! Stekelenburg, though unfamiliar with the great audience, he is a pretty neat keeper. Not a Van der Sar, nowhere near, but still a decent young goalkeeper. Central defence is Heitinga, who has had a good season with Everton and Mathijssen who is a certainty with HSV. I admit, they are not gold, but acceptable, more than enough. At the backs we have indeed Gio, he is old, but since we attack most of the time, he can be released of pressure, I mean, who plays with 3 strikers anyway and who has, besides us, a strong rightwinger? At the rightside we have Gregory van der Wiel, who is a exeptional talent. Both Barca and Arsenal are teams interested in signing him.
The point you made is a good one though. The defence is the weakest part of the team. It is eventhough acceptable and we have 2 very good defensive midfielders as you said: De Jong and Van Bommel. They can form a front against realy strong attackers, and aid the defence with it. And since we ought to play pressure football, that is to relief our defence a little.
Props though for your knowledge of dutch football, and dutch players. It is good to see that they make an impression in the world ;). As for english football, I do not know your players. Rayne Wooney? Frank Lamparse? John Terr-ible husband? It is from the top of my head, so I can be mistaken :D
-
Well, you guys introduced the 4-3-3 system with offensive wingers and have played attacking football ever since. What do you play now? 4-3-2-1 or 4-2-3-1? Either way Holland always focus on attack which of course is great fun to watch.
Van Persie best in the PL? Hehe, right :D... I even rate Kuyt higher - he's always playing for the team and gives 100 % all the time. Van Persie is always complaining at the referee and he's teammates. What is he whining about? He's a (moderade) striker so of course the central defenders give him a hard time. The only one whining more than van Persie in the PL is his coach Wenger in Arsenal. As coach you should stand up for your team but if you complain after each loss it's just ridiculous. Bad looooser.
Wenger recently said one funny thing though: "I'll camp outside the Santiago Bernabéu stadium to get the first go on the players Real Madrid release this year". This was a comment on the release of Sneijder and Robben who were sold in August last year and faced each other in the CL final. Robben was really amazing in Bayern last season. His debut when he played the last 45 and slammed two goals against the German champions Wolfsburg made quite an impression. And Sneijder in Inter, wow.
I admit the English team have weak keepers. With a little luck Joe Hart will be something one day but David James is a real risk. Luckily I'm not English but I have supported Tottenham Hotspur for the most part of my life so I'll follow their players in the World Cup. England has several of them, buut there are also two in Kamerun, one in Honduras, one in Brazil etc. as well.
My totally objective analysis of van Persie is of course based on the team he's currently playing in . The rivalty between north London clubs Tottenham and Arsenal is paramount. I have a lot of bad things to say about Arsenal and the coach/players but I'll stop the rant here.
-
Tottenham is a great team for sure. I remember the days of David Ginola, which was a great player and performer as well. Rating Kuyt over V. Persie is madness, and luckily you say it is colorred by your dismay of Arsenal. I agree Wenger is a whiner, and he shouldn't be. He has much to be proud of and should be worried about his defense, rather than the referees.
Which country are you from and gains your support?
The formation we play is something like 4-2-3-1 indeed and I would fill it in like this
Line of defense
Van der Wiel, Heitinga, Matthijsen, Van Bronckhorst
Nigel de Jong, Mark van Bommel
Robben, Sneijder, Van der Vaart
Van Persie
-
That is quite a line-up for Holland :P
I'm from Sweden and I'm not to proud of what our national team did in the play-offs . We had everything in our own hands until the end when a few crappy games spoiled the party. But we deserve no place in the World Cup as the player base looks right now.
We had our glory in the 1994 World Cup when we won bronze with a very good team. Since the latest play-offs we have a new coach who have changed the system completely and we've played a more Holland-like type of attacking football in our latest friendlies. Add to that the new exciting U21-players who just made their senior debut and we will be back in 2014.
So i support England for their Spurs players and of course our neighbors Denmark who will play Holland in the group stage. This time I'll just sit back in my sofa and enjoy good football regardless of the teams on the pitch
I think Spain will win the World Cup even though a European team has never won the World Cup when it's played outside Europe. I guess it's the first time for everything...
-
A Sweden. Ibracadraba doesn't want to play for sweden anymore. And 1994, with Brolin and Dahlin, isn't it? Henke Larsson....All great players.
It is indeed a great line-up and the good thing is that we don't get too much attention, because when pressure is up, like after the groupgames in '08, we tend to get nervous. Still I do believe we have a great chance in winning the event, but the road to the finals will be tough. Like I said, in the quarterfinal, if all goes well, we are likely to meet either Brasil or Portugal, both very good teams. But then again, if you want to win the worldchampionship, you must be able to win all games ;)
-
But then again, if you want to win the worldchampionship, you must be able to win all games ;)
So true.
I think Ibrahimovic will come around soon enough but we have more exciting players on the rise. Ibra's temper is a little bit like van Persie's and he can be such a baby sometimes. At other times he's purely brilliant. We had three top class strikers in -94, Brolin and Dahlin as you mentioned, but also Kenneth Andersson (who scored a lovely lobb in the draw vs Brazil). I think they bagged 5-6 goals each. Larsson was just a sub at the time but I remember at least one goal he scored.
I'm listening to the Swedish sports radio channel right now and a few minutes ago the football expert commentator (and former star player Ralf Edström) released a bomb - he thinks Holland will win. He admits Holland is an outsider but he hailed quite a few of the players (even van Persie) and thinks you will go all the way.
Anyway, you two are the only ones I've heard so far who thinks Holland will win. It is a real possibility so I wish good luck to you both ;)
-
That expert commentator is a real expert I must say . But where is your hail for me knowing Dahlin and Brolin  Ajax had a swedish player as well in the early 90s, Stefan Petterson. He was great along with Bergkamp which is the best player we have had since Cruyff (oh and I don't forget Van Basten here, I do think Bergkamp was a better footballplayer) But alas, you probably hate him, for he was a gunner :(
-

What? Kuyt isn't in the starting line-up?
-
Of course not! Why should we start him if we have Robben?
-
But I must say that this is my prefered line up, our coach is a huge Kuyt fan though. I like him, make no mistake, but not as much as I like others, such as Robben.
-

Ah, sorry for that :). Amazing some people outside Sweden still remember them. Brolin is known as the bouncing meatball in England, fat an slow. He was great in Parma but a real flop in Leeds. I think Leeds still considers him their worst signing ever... Dahlin was better in the box but played ugly with lots of elbows in the faces of the defenders. He never dived for penalties though which earned him some respect.
Yeah, I remember Petterson - red-haired striker originally from Gothenburg. I didn't knew he played with Bergkamp though #-o Bergkamp, there you have a first class Dutch striker. Funny thing though that he was (is) so scared of flying so he went by car to play Arsenals CL-games on mainland Europe...
I don't hate all the Gunners - Fredrik Ljungberg was amazing in Arsenal and almost as good in our national team. And I primarily love good football which Dennis Bergkamp definately contributed to!
-
South Africa 1 - 1 Mexico
Absolute screamer from Tshabalala, shame the hosts couldn't hold on to it.
Now its time for France - Uruguay. Come on Uruguay!
-
Hullo Hullo!
We are the Billy Boys!
Hullo, Hullo!
You'll know us by our noise!
Rangers FC and Scotland till I die!
-
0-0 half time while France is waaay better, but there's no real system neither of France nor Uruguay. They just hope Ribery would score a goal...
-
This is why so many americans hate soccer, scoreless ties happen often
-
That game sucked a lot. No cutting edge from either team meant loads of build up play was flattened by poor attacking finish.
-
They ouught to have Karim Benzema in the squad!
-
Yeah, and Domeneque should have changed in Henry earlier... much earlier!
-
Henri the handballer?!?!?! He was trying to avoid another scandal :p
-
Yeah... that was funny indeed, seeing Henry complainng about a handball... ;)
-
Heinzes header was sweet but did you see the defender just stand and watch the play?
-
Speaking as an American I like football/soccer, love watching the Premier league and even MLS. I don't mind ties that much as long as both teams are still trying to win and not just kicking it around waiting for the time to run out. The main thing that bothers me about International soccer is all of the flopping and pretending your dying on the pitch. I've seen guys fall hold their left knee, look around to see if the ref is going to call anything and switch to holding the right knee in the meantime. If they are not holding their knee or ankle, they will hold the bottom of their foot, did they step on something? I enjoy watching the game, the players are the best in the world, the passion of the fans is great, but all of the faking of injuries to get a call is a huge turnoff. The stereotype here is that sissies play soccer.
With that being said I hope the US takes it to England today.
-
The stereotype here is that sissies play soccer.
Stereotypes exist for a reason.
-wtk
-
So, tonight guys, the USA will play against England... I'm not a prophet, but prepare yourself, this will be pretty hard. I guess Engalnd - USA 2-0 or 2-1.
-
Anything but England!
Ranger's Maurice Edu to lead the USA to victory against Scotland's auld enemy!
-
So, tonight guys, the USA will play against England... I'm not a prophet, but prepare yourself, this will be pretty hard. I guess Engalnd - USA 2-0 or 2-1.
1776, 1812, 1950 and 2010...when will they learn?
-wtk
-
It's going to take a tremendous effort by the US for sure. The only real advantage the US has is in the goalkeeper spot. If we can get up early who knows what will happen?
-
THAT is not how I wanted this game to start.
-
Well, focus on second place no matter what. Will be hard enough I guess.
-
Just have to keep attacking, it may end up costing another goal, we'll see.
-
Howard just got killed. Hopefully he can shake it off.
-
#$&*@! yeah!! 1-1.
-
Well we all know now who is not going to have a good nights rest.....terrible mistake, beyond believe!
-
During a pregame show this one guy was talking about howengland's only weakness was keeper
green proved him right
-
We're giving England too many chances down the stretch.
-
Not a great performance, but I'll take it.
-
I guess you would, haha. Wow, what a sad day for the keeper. He will not be happy at all.
-
USA! USA! USA! USA! If we win you all have to start calling it soccer :o
-
Random note but who else loves the official world cup song for this year?
-
I like the song, it's has a very catchy beat. I can't help but think of Fozzie Bear when I hear it though, that's not a bad thing, I dig Fozzie.
-
Brasil, eooooo!!!
-
Australia vs Germany tonight.
Go Aussies ... not sure i like our chances but you never know ....
-
And now to every American of you:
Why do most of all hate football? (Yes football, cus' American Football doesn't really have to do anything with foot+ball at all). You have such a good system, some very talented players, so why don't you support your team? Football really is the sport of the world, so why? I just can't understand this...
-
Its not that most Americans "hate" it, most just think it is kinda boring. We see a group of guys kicking a ball back and forth with hardly any contact. Then when there is contact weather it hurt or not they start acting like it was some big deal. It reminds us of "acting" and overdramatic acting puts us in the soap opera state of mind.
See we call it soccer because you can play in your socks and never get hurt. There is little risk.
I mean when playing real football people get hurt! When LT got a hold of Joe Thiesman and snapped his leg... there is no acting in that. :o

I would suggest that most Americans don't hate soccer; rather, most Americans are apathetic.
For most American kids, soccer was something you played from the ages of 4-10 while you were waiting for baseball, basketball, or football (American)season.
-wtk
-
In most cases the guys that play on the soccer teams in high school are the guys that are not athletic enough to play one of the other sports or whose parents don't want to see their kid get hurt so they let them play soccer, golf or tennis, chess or be on the debate team or math club. It's getting better and there has been a lot more interest in soccer here in the states over the last decade, but here in America the football players still get the chicks and every red-blooded American boy knows that.
-
Also the kicking game is a very important part of American football, don't underestimate it's importance. In a game that is a defensive battle field position is everything, both punting and defensive play play a huge part in this. A team without a good kicking game rarely is a contender.

In response of Legolis I wanted to post some football injuries, but only the sight of them makes me obnoxious. I agree on the dramaqueen acts we see on the pitch, they are appalling and not very men-like.
So if you think there is little risk, just youtube football injuries, you will see the risks :S
-
I don't think anyone is saying you can't get injured playing soccer. After all, didn't that body builder tear muscles playing bocce?
-wtk
-
I know what your saying Gil-Estel there are some brutal injuries on you tube!
Of course there are some injuries in socker, I mean look at all the chances someone can stub a toe or even bend back a toenail, Ouch! On occasion a broken leg from stepping in a soft spot on the turf. I think most injuries are from fans charging the fields though, people get a little crazy once its all over!
-
Did anyone of you ever see the Hands of a Football Goalkeeper? Most of the fingers are stretched or half broken, and in Football, you canget hurt very easily if you play it fast and well; especially ingym halls where you just get the ball and shoot from whatever position you like. And the ball can be faster than 100km/h, and I week ago, I nearly lost a tooth because of that.
ON the other hand, you can also say that some other sports are unnecesarrily brutal. In football, take a look at players like Messi. They aren't that huge, but they have tricks and much skill. And that's what I like about Football.
-
The best part about watching football, be it in the stands or at home, is that you get to gloat whenever you win, and stab opposition fans whenever you lose. Rangers rule the Old Firm.
-
Speaking of losing teeth... how about the majority of hockey players! Now those guys are pretty crazy nothing like watching two people on ice skates holding on to the others jersey while taking and giving a butt kicking! That is madness lol.
Also don't take me to literally I like to pull peoples tuggs on occasion and soccer I mean Fooball players get extreme about the game. ;D
-
Its not that most Americans "hate" it, most just think it is kinda boring.
Can you explain me why baseball is not boring to 'most americans'?

Its pretty boring too kinda like goof, I mean golf! I guess I shouldn't say "most Americans" but around 97.999% of the Americans I have met in all the states I have been to. If I can get up to go to the bathroom without any fear of missing anything well it just doesn't keep my attention to long. Now if there is a game that will keep me sitting there in my own pee, now thats a game lol! Not that i would cause if I even suspected it I would strap on some depends before hand.
-
Germany - Australia 4 - 0!!!!!
Poldi, KLose, Müller and Cacao!!!
-
I do find baseball boring Cw0rk. I can watch college ball and little league baseball, but major league baseball bores me to death. I'd rank the major team sports in this order football, basketball, soccer, hockey and then baseball and if I never saw another hockey or baseball game it would be alright with me. I prefer watching volleyball over hockey and baseball.
Geez, Germany killed Austrailia.
-
I am sad ... oh well ... my second nationality (if that makes sense) is German so some consolation there.
Best sports ... for me .... Car Racing, Cricket ... soccer comes in their every so often usually once every four years ;)
-
So I was watching The West Wing (the TV show), and there was this one scene where the VP is explaining to a guy why so few Americans like hockey, because Americans love situations, such as "Fourth and 5 from the 9 yard line the game is on the line and here's the snap" but in hockey, and to an extent, soccer, the scoring is more... random, you know, like the goal in the USA-England game, 999 times out of 1000 he would've stopped it, but he, randomly, missed it.
Anyway that's my spam for the day
:EDIT: Also Americans are bored by announcers who say, "We're in the 86th minute and they need a shot to get past the keeper." That's just not exciting to them.
-
Can you explain me why baseball is not boring to 'most americans'?
The same way that soccer/football has so much history in other countries, baseball has a lot of history associated with it. It is America's national past time and personally, I love it.
L3333, I had never thought about it from the "scenario" point of view, but I think there is a lot of substance to that argument. I would much better be able to describe a touchdown pass or a big hit in baseball than a goal in soccer because there are so many more scenario-markers. In football, there is the down, the line, the quarter, the minute, and the score. In baseball, there are variables like the inning, the score, the number of runners on base, the number of pitches the pitcher has already thrown, etc. In soccer or hockey, it's minute and score.

Kick-off in just 2,5 hours - good luck all you Dutch people on this forum. We have a huge World Cup Tipping system at work and I can't decide if I shall change my result from 1-1 to 2-0 in Hollands favor.
1-1 is a result from the heart, 2-0 from the brain and 3-0 from the stomach. #$&*@!, this is a hard match to predict. Has any starting elevens been released yet?
Worst thing is I'll miss the game. Maybe I can stream it from the internet...
-
The dutch needed an own goal to score... doesn't bode well for their future chances since spain, brasil and the like won't be that stupid
-
Ah, the expert is talking, pfff. Denmark won their qualifiers above Portugal and Sweden, so they are not a shitteam. We didn't start too well indeed, but to see it as a prelude for our chances in winning the cup, that is just nonsense. EC 1988 we lost the first game, to eventually win the event.
-
I like to play every sport and watch none except maybe (just maybe) hockey. Now, hockey's got it all. It takes skill, it takes strategy, it takes tactics and it takes brutality. In what other sport can you see two guys chasing a puck (or ball or whatever is being chased nowadays) and suddenly they cross. Gloves off and let the fight begin. The referee doesn't stop them! He declares a winner of the fight! Talking about brutality.
Too much fuss is made about sports. I'd understand if the fuss was made by people who play it, but it's people who watch it that make all that fuss.

I also like hockey pretty much (as we're World Champions this year!), but there are 2 points I have to complain about:
- the puck is so small! I'm hardly able to keep its way with my eyes...
- all the Time-Outs and, whenever a foul or anything else is committed, the timer stops. That was really awful during the Final Match Czech Republc - Russia: The last 15 seconds were about 3 minutes long...
-

expert? Nah I just know that Brasil isn't going to do that
three pretty boring games today all things considered
tomorrow is the group of death Brasil ivory coast Portugal and north korea
-
Have you seen Brasil recently? All Brasilian topplayers from the past complain that nowadays Brasil isn't true to their nature of playing dominant and attractive football. So I don't expect them to be all of a sudden the most flamboyant team of the world cup. They face very strong competitors, so don't get your hopes up for very energetic games, in a way that it will be a walk over for Brasil.
-
Is anyone rooting for USA besides me? hahaha
-

Good job Holland, as you said Denmark is a strong team and I think the Danes played fairly well, especially in the first half. I couldn't see much of 2nd half but as for the bits i did Holland was the better team. And the first game is always one of the hardest as you pointed out. It will be an interesting race for second place in Hollands group. I still think Denmark will qualify for the next stage.
Now everyone is hailing Germany for their game but people forget it was against what seemed to be Australias U19 team (my apologies to the friendly aussies at this forum but they didn't play very well to say the least).
I finally decided to go for 2-0 in Hollands favor so it seem's I still have some brains. Imagine that :-k
-

We are not very happy with our coach leaving some of our better players out and declaring defeat before the game started with negative tactics. However, to be fair, Germany are a league above the Aussies when it comes to soccer. Perhaps we should teach them how to play cricket.
-
Ha! I just KNEW there had to be a topic here! Well, counting the minutes to Brasil's kick off, let's see how we fare. With the tie between Ivory Coast and Portugal, we're in pretty good shape, I think.
-
Brasil - Northern Corea 4 - 0 I guess. I'm pretty generous ;)
-
I've guessed 3-0 in Brazil's favor but what is Kaká doing? :o
0-0 at half-time, this is indeed a strange World Cup - unpredictable but fun!
-
Is anyone rooting for USA besides me? hahaha
I'm with ya!!! USA is going to take it all the way!
-
How are brasil making such a meal of this????
-

Pure excitement up till now...and finally the 'stupid' brasilians scored their first goal.

Congrats...how 'stupid' of the Spanish players......Sorry, I can't resist. All of a sudden the dutch result isn't that bad afterall, is it.
Quite a surprise, but when holland is not involved, I like surprises, haha
-
Just to summ up, here's how the "best" temas played:
Germany :4-0
Holland: 2-0
Portugal: 0-0
Italy: 1-1
France: 0-0
Brasil: 2-1
Engalnd: 1-1
Spain: 0-1 (lost against us!)
I must say that I'm pretty disappointed. Besides Germany, none of the teams really convinced me....
-
Can we perhaps talk about why the hot Dutch women were arrested? #$&*@! soccer, be more boring.
-wtk
-
Nope.
All 4 years, football takes over for a month. Maybe after the WC. ;)
-
I'm pretty disappointed on Brasil, I also expected 4-0 or so. Then again, considering the tie between Ivory Coast and Portugal, it was good enough, as beating Ivory Coast on sunday pretty much locks us in for Top 16, and since our first adversary will come out of Group H, Switzerland did us a HUGE favor knocking Spain on their arse.
-
Nope.

I know you are still a bit younger, but never deny a man the right to talk about hot dutch women, you hear?! It was outrageous the way they were and are being treated. Brilliant stunt though by the producer of the beer brand, they could not have wished for more attention at such low price. Hire 36 models, put them in your dress (without any sign of advertisement ) and put them in a stadium, haha. The whole campaign costed maybe 50k, but is worldnews so it seems, can't put a price on that.

this (http://www.levensmiddelenkrant.nl/uploads/foto/Sylvie_DutchyDress_%28Large%29.jpg) is the wife of Van der Vaart, one of our players and she is posing in the so hated dress. Fifa even have forbidden online videos of this dress, mhuahaha. Stupid organisation.

Don't be. The high-ranking teams always grow during the tournament to be just better and better. The first game of the groupstage is normally a bit "cramped" so I expect most of your listed teams to do better in the next couple of games. But Switzerland beating Spain was totally unexpected. Unfortunately I missed the game - was your star player Frei fit or does he miss the World Cup due to injury just like two years ago?
I'm a bit surprised though over the Bafana Bafana. Sure South Africa has a theoretical chance to advance to the next stage but it's almost nil. If so they would be the first host team ever who doesn't qualify for the last 16.
-
Well, people are saying South Africa is done. I wouldn't go that far, since they can basically still advance by beating France, unless Mexico beats France, in which case Mexico and Uruguay can draw into the Top 16 and knock out both. Of course, considering what happened so far, Bafana Bafana is NOT likely to beat France, but it's win-or-die, and they ARE the hosts, so... Remember USA in '94? Pretty tough game for us.
-
Remember USA in '94? Pretty tough game for us.
If I remember the World Cup in USA -94? Sure, our bronze medal still glimmers ;D
But I don't remember what happened to the US team I'm afraid. Sure, South Africa still has the chance but it will be a real tough one, especially if they play like yesterday. And their first keeper's red card isn't improving their chances either. Talking of which - it was a slight touch but he was going for the ball. It must be really hard for him. Have you seen his kicks - he hits the ball high up in the air (almost at shoulder height) and they have precision like laser-guided missiles. Never seen anything like it!

Frei? he sucks. We all hate him. He's a bit like Inzaghi for Italy, just worse. Derdyok, Inler, Fernandes, those are the players we support. Young, talented, lots of skill ;)
But we lost Senderos, who played for liverpool until about 2 or 3 weeks ago, now plays for Fulham Really good defender...
-
The US team faced Brasil before the quarter-finals, and it was a pretty tough match, 1-0 Brasil, close to the end.

We can say that some countries are dissapointing up to this point. Luckily, resultwise, Holland isn't....yet. Tomorrow Japan....We will win, for sure!

USA won, #$&*@! call.

The U.S. was robbed. It was a horrible call.

Youre not kidding. That was appalling. I was ashamed and embarrassed to be English after that.
-
On the US game, you could have been with 10 players very, very soon. It was a horrible call however. England....well, I will keep my tongue.
We weren't convincing again, but we have 6 points. I am not worried though about the rest of the tournament, cause we haven't been in trouble at all.....
-
Well, Brasil won their second game, but again, it wasn't that impressive. Second goal was a tragic handsball. Unbelievable that the ref allowed the goal. Ivory Coast was not creative at all, and if they were, they could have been so much more dangerous. Last part of the game was an insult for the game, with all the harsh fouls commited and the theater performed by Ivory Coast's players. So sad that Kaka got his second yellow card for nothing....
-
With a second draw in two games, I bet that if New Zealand survive the group phase, Peter Jackson's next movie will not be about Hobbits, but about the unbelievable story of this football team.
-
So what happens if NZ draw 1-1 and Italy draw 1-1 ... who goes through?
Both NZ and Italy will have three points, the same differential, the same number of goals for and against ... and they will be 2nd and 3rd place.
For NZ sake let's hope its not alphabetical!
-
If they both draw, it will depend on goals for, so a high score draw will be helpful.
If it is level, then New Zealand will advance based on the fact that they were considered the away team in the Italy match.

7-0????? I thought North Korea was supposed to be good
-
Portugal did a very good job. They kept the pitch wide, and by doing so, they tore the defence apart. With the qualities they possess it wasn't too difficult to built out the score.....nonetheless a great performance!
-
And we lost... snief...
-
7-0????? I thought North Korea was supposed to be good
Yeah, this was a massacre. North Korea were defending well until Portugal scored their first goal which meant that DKPR were forced to attack and score goals if they wanted to survive the group phase. Their attemp to play an offensive style footbal was a total FAIL.

WOOOHOOOO WE BEAT SWITZERLAND!!!! Seriously, I just didn't see this coming :D I'm having a barbeque tonight :)
Sorry WitchKingx5. Anyway, the referee was terrible. If Behrami hadn't been thrown out, we'd had definately lost. But you have to admit, that guy (Pierce, looked EXACTLY like him) hit two of our players xD
-
naah, those referees are just strange. I mean, first Germany, then Brazil and now Switzerland.. all top-teams are treated badly :P
-
Looking it up, if the Italy New Zealand group ends in all equal draws, then it will come to lots, drawn by a FIFA official.
-

-
Well, the Auzzies were robbed again, as if Kewell deserved a red card..
Also in our game against Germany... Do the referees know the rules for offside?
I can't believe the ammount of dodgy calls, nearly as bad as last worldcup when the Italy guy took a dive against us and milked a penalty which knocked us out.. rubbish.
-

That's the beauty of soccer (erm ... football). One bad call can change the entire match ... and protect the so called superpowers of soccer. Referees ... the twelth player for the richest teams.
Sorry for sarcasm ... I know its probably not true ... but sometimes I do wonder.
-
They need to add instant replays. Referee's need to explain themselves. Calls need to be able to be reversed.
-
True, with the stakes that high, it should. But football is a very conservative game and at the top they are not willing to change it at all. But when you look at the horrible mistakes made in the past with offside goals and such....
1 Example. The finalist of the Champions League, Bayern Munchen, won with their place in the finals I guess 30-40 million usd. But they should have been eliminated a few rounds earlier, cause of an offside goal they made. The comment is: it is the charme of the game.....:lo:. You don't want to know how charming I am, when I lost that much money!
-
They need to add instant replays. Referee's need to explain themselves. Calls need to be able to be reversed.
I'd hate to see instant replays... unless if there is only ONE replay allowed per game. Otherwise, there would be as much pauses as american football.
-
You know what's great about soccer? When after the match, whether you win, lose, or tie, your team should've won.
I think soccer fan culture is just as bad bland and uninteresting as soccer itself.
-wtk
-
I think soccer fan culture is just as bad bland and uninteresting as soccer itself.
-wtk
You are unenlightened and uneducated if you feel this way with any justification. If you have experienced the culture as a true football fan and come to this conclusion I'm surprised. I suspect you have never been a die hard football fan and had any experience with it enough to say. If you have, apologies, but as someone who has played, watched and supported it all my life, I cannot see how the post game and mid week discussions of team selections, transfers, bad refereeing decisions, poor substitutions, wonder goals, disallowed goals and all the controversy that goes with the game, is not interesting to a sports fan. It is anything but bland. Its has so many talking points you could go on for days. The fact that you quite rightly say (well in a lot of cases) that teams feel aggrieved and that "we should have won" is another part of enjoying the football, ruing miss chances and expecting more next time. The banter and desire for revenge etc generated by these types of games is what keeps football fans addicted.
-
One thing about American football, the refs have to make the call known to everyone. They have to state the players number and what infraction was committed.
The enforcement of rules of soccer are too inconsistent. You see an Italian's jersey get touched while in the box and it's a penalty kick, a couple of Americans are getting held by the waste while in the box and they let it go, then wave off the goal with no explanation. Offsides is dependent on which team is playing and what the score is at the current time. If one of the super powers is behind and on the attack offsides will not be called unless it is blatant.

I used to date a girl who was recruited to play soccer in college and had a professional contract in place with a WPS team (I think Philly, don't remember). I got dragged to a few pro soccer games, men's and women's, and could not at all get into the game.
Bad refereeing decisions, poor substitutions, surprise plays...these are things that are part of every sport. Managers or coaches are always questioned after a loss.
Even if the game was, god-forbid, 2-0 (what a blowout!), the losing team leaves feeling like it should have won that game. In soccer, a team never wins. The other team "beats itself."
If I wanted to watch a team run gulags, I'd go back to my high school football (American) practice. But since I want to watch a game where speed, stamina, and a few sexual favors to referees isn't the only thing that determines a game, I'm going to hit the remote on the World Cup.

-
Hilarious. The french are down to 10 and 2-0 down. What ignomy. Theyve made a proper balls up of this. Doesnt help they have the crappest manager in international football mind.
-
Tomorrow we're wipin' the floor with England! No offense Englanders, but that's the way we roll. xD
-
I wished France would just let go, so South Africa would qualify.
-
I wished France would just let go, so South Africa would qualify.
So did I, as I have a really stupid bet with my Maths teacher if Mexiko will succede. Please Argentina, kick the Mexiakns out... [-o< [-o< [-o< [-o< [-o< [-o<
-
Pepi. If at the start of the world cup i had been told all we had to do was beat Slovenia I would have laughed and taken that. Now the thought fills me with dread. Not just because were playing awful. You acquitted yourself really well against the US until you threw it all away sloppily.
Still we SHOULD be able to beat you, whether we will currently is a whole different kettle of fish.
One more thing to say. HAHAHA France. Well done. If youre gonna #$&*@! it up, at least do it in style.
-
We'll see today lemon. I'd say it's a fair match with anyone capable of winning. xD
-
Good luck England, I really hope you go through to the last 16. I'm not to surprised England have failed to make an impact so far though. The pressure on the players from fans and the national media is enormous. Did anyone notice the faces of Robert Green and James Milner during the national anthem just before the USA game? They were grim and extremely tense and I bet they were so nervous that they rather would be somewhere else. And Milner was substituted after only 30 mins and Green, well... :-S
Compare England with some other teams like Argentina or Uruguay. They enjoy their football and have fun on the pitch. IMO England should be able to do a lot better with all the good players. I guess lots comes down to psychology in the end. I can't even start to imagine how it feels to wait on the pitch for kick-off, knowing that a possible mistake from you will follow you as long as you live. Add to that the fact that as a player you just get the opportunity to play the World Cup every four years.
Even in Sweden, Green's mistake was blown out of proportions. He instantly made the cover of our largest daily sports magazine with a banner across his chest saying "Miss USA". Fun? Maybe, but it'll be tough for him to shake off.
-
What a goal by Donavan!
and a glorious belly-flop to celebrate!
-
#$&*@! yanks pippin us to the post last minute!
Either way we qualified. Yay. Much better perfomance, should have won 2 or 3 nil. Sorry Pepi, the best team won.
Just the tonic after the algeria game.
-
The best team won indeed. Too bad algeria couldnt hold for another 3 minutes, though. Ow well...We came far enough.^^
-
Alright, I don't follow soccer, or futbol, very much but I have my favs, (USA and Costa Rica [I served a mission in CR so I have to support them, Pura Vida!]) anyways, whether you love brazil, germany or some other place, OR if you're a lord of the rings fan, check this out!

Exactly! Since 2006, there's just one feeling I have for them: Hate.
-
Well, 3 played, 9 points....who is doing that as well? Now Robben is back, we could reach somewhere nice. If we win the next match, we will have a very hard quarterfinal, but hear me out. If we get to the quarterfinal and we win it, we will win the tournament!
-
right now I like Argentina and the Netherlands in the final
I also think that the swiss will advance with Chile
-
I also think that the swiss will advance with Chile
Now that would be a surprise....possible though
-
I also think that the swiss will advance with Chile
Now that would be a surprise....possible though
Switzerland needs to win and Chile needs a win or draw, not that ridiculous
-
I never said ridiculous, a surprise though, to see Spain elliminated, as they are possibly the strongest team -based on the players they have- at the current world cup.
-
seems as your prediction is going to be wrong, Lego... Spain is winning and Switzerland is just too bad...
-
yeah, but did you see that goal by Villa? it was either sweet offense or awful goalkeeping
-
yeah, but did you see that goal by Villa? it was either sweet offense or awful goalkeeping
I think a little bit of both...
anyway, Iniesta's goal was really awesome: Iniesta -Torres -Iniesta - Villa -Iniesta- goal! Really nice play!
-
And we lost. Anyway, it's not that bad, we're in, cus the Honduras game ended 0 - 0. However, now we face Brazil... well, I can only wish Chile the best.
-
Hopefully the US can come back against Ghana. Ghana just seems to want it more and are controlling the midfield. They are quick.
-
It was a nice run, but the US team ran out of comebacks. Kudos to Ghana.
-
O well maybe next time! Besides it won't be much longer before Football season comes back around anyway!
-
Regarding USA vs Ghana
If only the referees had been nicer to the Aussies USA might have faced off against us and i think u might have had a better chance .... good luck to Ghana!
-
Ghana has all of africa on their side
-
](*,)

Muller was awesome
Sorry Brits Lampard's was a goal
And tevez's first wasn't ah well we Americans know what it's like to haves goal called back
-
I really wonder whether something will change...we need the option of videointeruption.
-
I wish FIFA could find a way to review just the simple things. They already tack on extra time for injuries. How long would it have taken to review that a ball was 3-4 feet past the line? You could have a 3 year old in the replay booth tell you if it crossed the line in less than 30 seconds. I've seen celebrations after a goal waste a good 1 1/2 to 2 minutes of game time. Keep the game clock rolling if that's the big issue. Get with the times FIFA. Why not take the time to get the call right? Why not have some integrity in the sport? The score ended up 4-1 and Germany would have probably won anyway, but who knows if England was granted the goal they scored to make it 2-2, it was a huge momentum changer.
I look forward to the World Cup every 4 years and you can ask Ulmo, the more I watch the more I get bitter over the lack of officiating and consistency in the rules. It's probably the most intense edge of your seat sport you can watch, it's just sad that FIFA is stuck in their ways. If I have to sit through the Italians acting like they just got blasted by a shotgun when they are barely touched and watch them roll around on the ground for a couple of minutes then I'd be willing to sit through a minute of the officials taking the time to get a goal/non-goal call right. I don't see why anyone would have a problem with this.
-
Brasil vs Nederland! Nice quarterfinal. With all respect for earlier opponents this is an opponent with which it will be clear how good we really are. And I have a feeling that if we win (please read the IF part carefully) we will win the tournament. I am so looking forward to that game! Both teams haven't performed at the max of their possibilities. I mean, both teams have huge attacking potential. We have a weaker defense, but our 2 defensive midfielders are top of the bill. Aahhh, great, great, great!
-
Agreed, the Winner of the Brasil-Netherlands game makes it to the final
-
I should hope so, last 2 World Cups I watched Brasil VS. Netehrlands after the Top 16, Brasil won and made it to the finals. But it's gonna be one heck of a tough game, our defense is AMAZING, but has been sleeping on the job due to weak opponents. And we also have an injured star and a sleeping one (seriously, what's wrong with Robinho?).
-
But this is what the fun is all about. Again, with all respect to other countries, and how fun it is to have a surprise act, these games are so intense. Argentina-Germany, Germany-England, Spain-Portugal, Holland-Brasil....LOVE IT. Again, so looking forward to the match friday.
-
Spain's passing game was sweet, and every time it looked like the Portuguese were about to break down the defense, someone saved them.
-
My predictions (perhaps somewhat ambitious)
Semi Finals
Brazil vs Urugauy
Germany vs Spain
Final
Brazil vs Germany
Winners
Germany
Why will Germany win? Four years ago Australia lost to Italy and were knocked out of the world cup ... this time Australia were effectively knocked out of the World Cup in their first game against Germany. That's my reason and i am sticking to it. (Perhaps it also has something to do with my bias to my distant German heritage).
-
I'm not conviced about the football Brazil have been showing. The "big stars" like Robinho and Kaka aren't playing near of what they could, specially Kaka (i'm not a big fan of Robinho). The best we have is the defenders... Lucio for me is showing the best football in Brazil's team. Anyway i hope they got better cause they will probably need it to win against Holland, which seems to have a great team. I watched two games of them and i like what i saw. A well organized team, with skilled players.
But the match i REALLY WANT to see is Argentina X Germany, for me two of the best teams of WC. Argentina doesn't have an awesome defense but they rock from midfield on and Germany even not having a player like Messi have many good players and really "play togheter".
I'm hoping Paraguai and Uruguai can make it too (Go South America!) and Argentina...well... i don't like them very much ;)
-
I was wondering how the people of Brasil look at the match, not only the Brasilians here, but also in the press.
Here, we are aware of the potential of Brasil. Some say we will never make it, that it will be a pretty boring game with both team lurking for victory. Both teams rely on the organisation, and are like sharks, waiting for the kill. Others say we will win, simply because we are for once the underdog and some people seem to underestimate us. Romario said just to eliminate Robben en Sneijder, and then Brasil is set. Well, then they could be in for a surprise and to add to that, that is the strength of those 2 players, they are hard to stop. Inter was having 2-3 man on Robben in the final of the Champions League, but they needed that. Due to Bayerns lack of Ribery that moment, it worked. But we have other talented players as well.
Like I said, we both have to perform better than we have done, in order to win, but I really think the chances for either team to win is like 50/50/
Oh man, did I mention already that I am sooooooooooo looking forward to this game? I have borrowed a beamer, bought all kinds of meat for the BBQ, so I am set. BBQ is so good, if we lose, the taste of meat will give us relief and when we win it even tastes better!
-
What's the purpose of the beamer (that's a BWM over here in Aussie land)
I hope you guys win
-

A beemer is BMW car over here as well. Im confused too. Clearly the dutch have another meaning. Heije?
-
to beam.....It is a projector, we call it a beamer. Now I have a widescreen of 2,5 meters, lots of real cola (so no pepsi) and a bbq.....love it
-
Ahhh a projector. Got you. Cool. Enjoy the fun Wubs. But sorry I have to support Brasil. I have them down to win in the company sweepstake so i have money riding on it! [-o<
-
Well that was money stupid spent. Why would you bet on Brasil...does it have anything to do with Van Persie, being a Gunner? If you are betting, look at the odds. Probably you will win less if Brasil wins than if Holland wins, fair enough. But looking at the teams, you should have to bet Holland, cause they rule . And so this info could have gotten you a lot of money....
-
Well, looking at the stats, Brazil has won the most world cups...
-
Italy also won many, but look how they lost... being succesful in the past doesn't mean much.
-
Well that was money stupid spent. Why would you bet on Brasil.
Because theyre currently winning thats why! And they look good for the full time result too. Hope it stays that way...
-
nope 1-1.
-
Nope 2-1, argh my money is slipping away as Heije's smile gets bigger!
-
Oh yes... but still, Brail often looses like that; no challanges during first Rounds, and then loose against not much better team (e.g. France in 2006).
-
And red card for Melo...
-
Pepin vs Gil-Estel.
Gil-Estel wins. Poor Brazilians.
-
Yeah, didn't quite work out how I expected after our first goal. Hope you guys win, though.
-
Wow! What a game, as far as the nerv factor concerned. This was almost the first game we are taking home, though we might not deserve it all that much. The first 60 minutes were obviously for Brasil. Never do we win such matches. Second half the players fought for what they are worth, and well, semifinal, here we come!
Dunga isn't the best loser....he was whining about the referee. And allthough I hate to pick on the man, he was not very consistant, and I really feel, that if was to be a whiner too, we were at the short end of his judgement
-
What did everyone think of the Germany-Argentina game?
-
That argentina failed their first real test and failed miserably. Germany battered them. So impressive. Great game to watch. Makes me feel less bad about the england score even though we were still #$&*@!.
-
I guess England, Holland, Spain, France or germany.
Some were eliminated by now. I guess Niederlande and germany make it to the final game.
-
I guess England, Holland, Spain, France or germany.

agree to that.
-

Which would be totally awesome. I hope that we win the semifinal, and that Germany win their semifinal. Which would make them favorite, since they would have eliminated Spain. I love being the underdog! And I prefer Germany over Spain, because if Spain have an offday, they still are magnificent players. If germany have an offday, they are lesser players than spain in the end.
-
But Holland will never win against Germany in a World Cup Final... especially if they have a player called "Müller". ;)
-
Well let us first agree that he is a great player with even greater potential. Good thing is that Germany can't do much better than they do, while we have space to improve. And if Germany makes it to the final, and we do the same thing, than we have some players that know what to do. Van Bommel knows the guy very good of course.
Don't get ahead of things though. Both countries have to win their games, and on paper we have the easier game. But that was what Italy was thinking when playing vs Slowakia. Germany though have the tougher match, vs Spain, the European champion of course.....
-
Don't get ahead of things though. Both countries have to win their games
Agreed. But I hope and think, both will.
Btw: I felt really sad for Nederlande at the songcontest. Hope, my country passes the qulifying next time for the world biggest show.
-
What did everyone think of the Germany-Argentina game?
Maradona sucks as a coach
his defense was dying in the first 15 min of the second half but his first sub was an offensive player, but not until after the second goal, PLUG THE HOLES ON DEFENSE DUDE!
Right now, the only way I see spain beating germany is if spain says, "screw it you cant win if you never touch the ball" then proceed to take something like 75% of possession
-
You know, as a German football fan since 1990 it is REALLY strange to see our team play football in a rather attractive way. Normally, German teams muddle through tournaments, but this time it seems like they really have plan ;)
At this point I do not care if we go onto the final. The way the team played so far is a success and reward in itself. And to have proved Gary Linaker correct once again doesn't hurt, either :-) Cheers!
BTW, don't cry for me Maradona... :-)
-
But nonetheless I have the same feeling with Germany as with Holland in 08. We dominated vs Italy and France, with attractive football, but we lost vs Russia. The players of Germany are lesser players (with utmost respect!) than the players of Holland, and especially lesser players than Spanish players. The momentum is right for the team now, but what if they meet a team that is more dominant, are they able to deal with it? We will see tomorrow....
But for now...we are going to play our semifinal!! We should be able to win, but should and shall are different.
-
I have my KNVB shirt on...
-
What a goal from Van Bronkhorst! Goal of the tournament by miles. Beats Tevez' strike.
Dutch should win this.
-
Absolute screamer!
-
But the equaliser was bloody good too!!!
-
Poor show of keeping. I still think KNVB will take it, if they dont psych themselves out.
-
Tsk cheating dutch....
-
But that ones legit so fair enough. They deserve win it anyway.
-
YEAAHHHHH!!!! WORLDCUP FINAL! WOW.....this is so amazing....
This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KXWTMklrUA) is an impression in Amsterdam...... we go crazy!
-
But that ones legit so fair enough. They deserve win it anyway.
I guess they didn't, after all. Seriously, what's wrong with the refs this time around? England got knocked out (yes, it was 4-1, but Germany would get shot down after taking 2 and having the game tied again, it'd have played out VERY differently), Argentina got a first goal offsided in a match, which also opened the way to their victory. Now Uruguay. What's wrong with you?!?
-
What's wrong with you?!?
What do you mean whats wrong with me?
-
I was actually crying out for the refs.
-
Well with all respect, Uruguay didn't have a single chance. Both goals came out of nothing. The second one was pathetic, you saw it coming from miles away. I will not say that we were the greatest, but if you saw the game I really think we deserved to win...
-
Ahhh ok, yeah the refs have not been great this tourney. Its not been a good tournament overall i dont think. No great games, only a couple of great goals, standard of free kicks and set pieces dreadful and shocking decisions by the officials.
Plus Fifa is an awful association for running things.
-
Are there any Spanish members in this board?
-
I don't think so, and as I supported Germany until yesterday, I hope the Netherlands will win!
-
GO NETHERLANDS!!
This time it's actually a sanguine sorta bond with the country...
-
Gees how godamn dirty are the dutch team? I hope they dont win now purely because they deserve 9 men on the pitch. De Jong's karate kick on Alonso was equal to assault and Van Bommel is a disgusting player. No idea how to challenge and is a horrible tackler.
-
Well, first of all, congrats for the Spanish players. They deserved to win. Second, I agree with Lemon, that some players should not be on the pitch first half.
Howard Webb was not the best ref... Again, apart from some luck we might have had with Van Bommel and De Jong, Iniesta made a stupid foul that could be awarded with red and where is the rule that when a player is asking for a card, he is the one that gets one? 3/4 times spanish players asked for a card and Howard Webb did nothing...... And the cornerkick he didn't give us, the counterattack was the goal, so that should never have happened. Bah....
Last thing, I am proud we got so far, I am proud the dutch players made a tunnel of honor for the spanish players and again, Spain did deserve this title....
-
This what lem0n and Gil said express that what i had to say. Only thing what me really annoys is that De Jong didn't get what he deserved! a dark dark red card in xxxl format banning for 100 games... what a dirty foul! In Austrian TV a ref meant in the pause that in first half there should have been 3 red cards for Netherlands... well, at least 1 would have been very obvious.
But we got a winner who deserved the title, we got a team which was one of maybe only a few who can compete with the spanish team.
@all my dutch friends: I know, nobody will remember the second, but second place is - as gil already said - also a thing of which you can be proud of :)
-
This sums it up perfectly for me:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2010/8812484.NOLINKstm (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2010/8812484.NOLINKstm)
"Dutch football legend Johan Cruyff has launched a scathing attack on Netherlands' display in the World Cup final, deriding it as "anti-football"...."Sadly, they played very dirty," Cruyff told Spanish newspaper El Periodico...."This ugly, vulgar, hard, hermetic, hardly eye-catching, hardly football style... If with this they got satisfaction, fine, but they lost."
And this line i feel is how I would put it:
"It hurts me that Holland chose an ugly path to aim for the title."
Ugly is a good choice of terminology as that is how it was too watch.
If one of the greatest dutch players, if not of all time, can say this it seems glaringly obvious how badly Bert van Marwijk got his approach wrong. Shame really. They have an incredibly talented squad. Swapping Elia for De Jong and Van der Vaart for Van Bommel and it would be a great team that could win without negative tactics.
-
But still, I'm sad the WC is over...
