Title: A review of the LOTR SBG
Post by: jdizzy001 on July 06, 2010, 06:28:18 PM
About a year ago I asked if anyone on the boards had experience with Games Workshop's Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game.  I got a few responses.  I decided to purchase the Mines of Moria starter set, painted the minis, and finally played the game.  It was awesome!  The game was well made and the minis were far more fun to paint than I originally anticipated.  I only posted this comment as a form of closure to my original post.  I know there were countless members of this website waiting to hear my review of the game.... okay maybe not, but I thought I would share the review anyways.  Well, the long and short of it is, the game was great, the minis are awesome, and they will make amazing site markers.

The game is much more fluid than Warhammer itself, as that has gotten tied up in a web of rules, rules, erratas and some more rules. Good miniatures aswell, just wish I could afford both!

If there had been enough money in my pockets and interest for the game in town, I would have been playing this from the very start. I'm glad to hear that somebody actually got to enjoy it.

that is the hardest part.  The cost.  I don't have anyone to play the game with on a regular basis, but since I role play, I can rationize the purchses away by claiming I will use them in my D&D campaigns, or an LOTR campagin if I can ever find a gaming group to play LOTR.  It is hard when Big D made a 2D6 version of D&D.  everyone sits down to play, starts rolling dice and realized they're playing D&D.  Once they make this revelation they put the game away and pull out 4E D&D.  I could use the Iron Crown Middle Earth Role Playing game, but no one wants to play that one because they don't like the idea of accidently slicing off their characters foot with a dagger because of a terrible attack roll... Sigh, I love D100 games.

Why do you hate them so?  Did they steal something from you?  (Besides your money, we all know they overcharge for everything.)

PS- I just finished painting the 9 riders, faramir, damrod, sauroman, and grima.  They turned out great, especially Damrod.

I hate the way they try to make people think that wargaming and/or roleplaying is "The Games Workshop Hobby" and not hobbies that other companies produce stuff for. And yes, often at a far more reasonable price.
I'm glad to read you're pleased with the way your miniatures have turned out. I'm an avid miniature-painter myself, so I'd be interested to see any photos you might post.
I think you deserve a cookie for such a gracious response! :gp:

Haha! You're very welcome! :)
And I look forward to seeing any photos you might post. In the meantime, please take a look at the attachment below and let me know what you think. It's a slightly converted Victoria-class battleship from Ground Zero Games. I added the sensor 'wings' and a ventral torpedo turret, along with a bit of Milliput hull reinforcement. Now it's a Splendid-class heavy battleship ;)

Here are a few other familiar faces.  Sorry the images aren't crystal clear, but my digicam doesn't have a macro function.  There are a few uruks in the sauroman pic too.  I have rangers, but they aren't painted yet, just primed

Me? I don't have one. I was thinking about giving GCCG a try but was somewhat put off the idea by the rudeness of a certain person on this forum.

Take it with a grain of salt.  His heart is in the right place, but he gets a little excited sometimes.  He is a good guy, but has been on the forms for so long now, he forgets that others have not, thus they aren't as familiar with the options available to them.  Honestly, I've never seen him on the gccg... that is unless his username is different there than here.  Mine is the same, I am jdizzy here, and I'm jdizzy there.  I want people to know when I've lost to them, or beat them.  My win ratio is up to 50% now.  I am real excited about that.

A simple apology from him would have been very well received by myself, I assure you :)

I'm perfectly willing to make allowances for those who make allowances for others. One of the things that puts me off using forums more is that so many other users seem to forget that politeness should be adopted out of respect for one's fellow man, not out of fear of reprisal by him. It is refreshing to meet someone like yourself who seems able to appreciate this =D>

Perhaps I'll give it a go, then. I'm not really sure how I'll do that, though. I have no internet access at home, so I have to either use the computers in the library in town (as I am at the moment) or at work. They only permit you to use the library ones for an hour at a time, and I can't download stuff at work (which I'm assuming I'd have to do if I was to play in between the phonecalls I have to answer) :-S

Jesus, are we still hung up over this? I did say I was sorry...that apparently you can't get over yourself just a little bit and have a sense of humor.

...respect for one's fellow man, not out of fear of reprisal by him.

Where I come from, respect is earned.

he forgets that others have not

Listen jdizzy, I appreciate what you said but you don't have to stand up for me by any means. I haven't lost any sleep over this ordeal, but it blows my mind that two weeks later this is still coming up. And by the way, I don't forget that sort of thing. I think I have fantastic situational awareness.

Kev, I honestly have no qualms about what I did, no reservations about how I treated you, and no intention of apologizing; however, I am ready to move on and figure out some new thing that we can all #$&*@! about.

See you around the forums.

Ket: i hope you don't feel i was over stepping my bounds.  I'll let the sleeping dog lie. (or is it lay?)

Kev:  I wouldn't want you to get in trouble at work, so whatever you need to do, just let me know your handle once your on.  We'll game sometime.

I'm "hung up" over nothing. I was explaining to jdizzy one reason why I hadn't signed on to GCCG. Saying "sorry" for the actions of another is not the same as apologising to that person, as I'm all too sure you are aware.

I had already "moved on". This does not change the fact that your rudeness was enough to make me have doubts as to whether I could expect players on GCCG to be the sort of people I wish to play with, and this is what I was explaining to jdizzy (ensuring that I did not name any names in the hope that I would not be thought of as waking up a sleeping dog).
---
jdizzy: Thanks. I'll do that and hopefully have the pleasure of playing you at some point in the future.

Haha. I guess now I should suspect that maybe everyone in England gets their feelings hurt easily, can't take a joke, and is a drama queen. It's a good thing I don't let "one bad apple" ruin the bunch.

Anyways, you don't need to worry. Next time I am in the UK I will pick up a quart of Ben and Jerry's--double chocolate?, rent The Notebook, and we'll cuddle on your Ikea sofa and hopefully that's a suitable apology. Maybe we can make cosmopolitans and watch a Sex in the City marathon and talk about everyone that we have perceived as wronging us over the years. In the morning, I'll make eggs but only one egg per person because I don't want to lose my figure and I know you don't either. Let me know if you need me to pick up a box of tampons or any more estrogen and I'd be happy to oblige.

P.S., jdizzy, you were fine. There's no reason for this to keep coming up anyways.

ha ha.  Yes and no.  LOTR SBG is officailly gone, but you can still find pieces for it because GW made a new game about a year or so ago called War of the Ring.  It is SBG on warhammer scale.  They streamlined the rules and instead of making 500 pt armies you make 5000 pt armies.  Unique cahracters, such as gorn, no longer count as individule units, but give morale bonuses to the battalion to which they are assigned.  So, No they do not make LOTR SBG characters anymore, and yes because the profiles presented in SBG can be applied to every aragorn or nazgul they make for war of the ring.  You can also find articels about assigning stats and point values to pieces without profiles.  And once in a while, when they make a new character, they will release a SBG profile in addition to a war of the ring profile.

actually, all of those paint schemes are just ideas put out by games workshop.  they have nothing "to do" with lord of the rings.  They are just ideas to get a modeler's creative juices flowing.  You could say the nightstalkers are Gondor's elite commandos who work only at night!  (I totally made that up.)
