Title: Assassin, the Game (Round 2)
Post by: DáinIronfoot on June 24, 2008, 06:38:19 AM
So...we're back on.

As long as Incog trusts me not to abuse the IP tracking I have at my disposal (but not readily available without some digging), I'm back on the force. I'd hate to give my badge up now....

How does one join?
Title: Assassin, the Game (Round 2)
Post by: DáinIronfoot on June 26, 2008, 08:20:34 AM
Typically there is one assassin and five cops. The assassin posts clues about his/her next intended target, with a deadline. The cops have until then to decipher and deduce what the clues mean, and each cop can then "protect" one person...including other cops or even themselves. If the correct person is protected by a cop by the deadline, the assassin is foiled and chooses their next victim, and the process repeats. Of course, if the victim is NOT protected by the deadline, they are assassinated--and if that victim is a cop, they normally cannot be replaced on the police force, so the cops are then shorthanded--and the process STILL repeats, with Incognito choosing another victim, posting clues, etc.

The ultimate goal is for the assassin to be caught by the cops. The cops each get two "arrest warrants" with which they can guess Incognito's true identity. If they are correct in a guess, Incognito is caught, the game ends for that round, and another person anonymously takes over the Incognito persona, with new cops being chosen and a new round beginning. If a cop guesses incorrectly, however, then they lose a warrant. If a cop loses both warrants (two wrong guesses), he or she is off the force for the rest of that round. So these guesses usually come later in the round and are based on clues to the assassin's identity that any decent Incognito will usually sprinkle throughout their postings, and also on information based around the assassin's personality, victims, and methods of assassination. It takes a lot of guesswork sometimes, but that guesswork is usually based on more and more evidence as time goes by.

Does that all make sense? ???

Anyway, to sign up as a cop, all one has to do is be one of the first five people to say they wish to join. If one wishes to be Incognito for a round, they must send a private message to the current Incognito indicating they wish to play the assassin next round, and the first to "call it" usually gets it.

So far, it looks like some of the "usual suspects" are signed up as cops: AgentDrake, sickofpalantirs, and myself. So there's still room if you'd like to join this round as a cop, Ulmo. It would be nice to have some new blood on the police force.

Yep, it all makes sense.

I enjoyed reading the last round.

This is my application to join the cops, in blood as required.

That should be our five, then:

AgentDrake
sickofpalantirs
Dáin Ironfoot
Ulmo
Lurtzy

Now we just need Incog.

Which, as far as I'm concerned, hasn't been chosen yet...

Post by: DáinIronfoot on June 27, 2008, 09:49:03 AM
Yeah, I guess it's possible that we do NOT have an actual assassin waiting in the wings behind the last. Hmmm.

I say give it a couple more days, and if no one steps up, we may have to have someone volunteer for the role. Perhaps Kralik could ask for PMs from those interested and select one to step into the role. I would do it myself, but that would...uh...require me to leave the force, for rather obvious reasons.

I checked with the old assassin, and as of right now a new assassin hasn't stepped up to the plate. Any takers just PM Incognito!

   NOLINKi am here

let us play a little game
i try to kill a person
and you try to stop me

   irony is a beautiful thing

unless you find and warn my victim
   they will burn to death
   at the tanning booth

   and even if you do
they might still die of skin cancer

Not to be rude, Mr. (Mrs.?) Assassin, but it's customary for us to have some manner of timeframe.

Unless the rules are changing on us again....

EDIT: Aw, poo. I just realized we're down a cop for now with SoP out of town. Guess you're getting thrown right into the mix your first time out after all, Ulmo.

Unless the rules are changing on us again....

That's a rule which I, for one, would rather not have change on us... 'Twould be nice to know how fast to think.

That said, any idea what the clue means? The 'irony' phrase is repeated twice, but I wonder if it might have something to do with dying anyway, of skin cancer, if we do save him/her?
Weird. not even sure what part's supposed to be clue and what's not.

Odd duck, this Incog is. :ninja:

Okay, lots of references to burning and tanning...but that doesn't lend any immediate help. Tanning makes me think of vacationing, which we have several folks doing now, but there's hardly anything concrete there.

I'll do some research on tanning salons tomorrow and see if I come up with anything.

Okay, well...

Burning.

FM has fire on his avatar. SoP has a fiery eye in his avatar.

Yeah, that's what I got so far. Weak, at best.

Isn't SoP on vacation? I thought of the irony=DainIronfoot connection, a good idea to protect our own.

I protect SoP. "despite your best efforts or his" suggests that the victim is trying to catch Incog.

Tanning/tan/tannery/horses?

Good thoughts, but unfortunately not immediately helpful. Not raising any red flags.

Hmmm. Tanning, nets, frying, and irony. Sounds more like a punchline than a clue. This is a toughie.

I'll keep digging. We have two more days, after all.

There is also the "and even if you do they might still die of skin cancer" link.

Tanning/skin cancer => UV light or blue light.

Now I think I've got it: What helps prevent skin cancer?  Something with SPF.

Nice catch, Ulmo. Makes sense with the 'irony' comment, too, since the victim apparently burns to death.

Should probably protect Dain, too, if we haven't come up with anything else by the time the deadline rolls around.
EDIT: Nevermind, Lurtzy already got Dain.

But the lines "can you find the objectives name" suggests that the 'objective' (victim, I assume) is somehow named in here. First letters of lines? Don't see anything there.

Wow. Brilliant, Lurtzy!

I've been looking at the memberlist, and a 'hawkeye' is someone with great eyes, often for hitting targets. Maybe HSPF again? Seems a little... obsessive of Incog to go after the same guy as first and third victim, but with this sorta message style, I'm not sure I'd be surprised at obsessive targeting. :P

Alright, well concrete overshoes I think is when the mob dips some guy's feet in cement, then drops him in the lake and he drowns. Lots of references to swimming, which makes me think water. Ulmo, maybe? Though it seems weird that Ulmo would drown.

Of course, there's always fishfleas (ditto on the Ulmo problem) and mecheteman's connection with aquatic chickens. Okay, so those two are stretching it a bit.
Also, OneFathom, since fathoms are used to measure the depth of water. Actually, that one seems pretty likely to me, since there's a lot about sinking/swimming.
Title: Assassin, the Game (Round 2)
Post by: AgentDrake on July 13, 2008, 04:02:10 PM
...and I just noticed that Incog seems to have left off his normal "lets play a game" line. Not sure if that's significant or not.

EDIT: And just found this. I thought "concrete overshoes" didn't sound right.
It should be cement shoes:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cement_shoes

Again, don't know how that could be significant, and it looks like "concrete shoes" isn't that uncommon in the references.
Title: Assassin, the Game (Round 2)
Post by: Ulmo on July 13, 2008, 04:10:23 PM
concrete overshoes?  That makes it sound like Incognito doesn't speak English as a first language. We'd say concrete shoes.

I think you've hit the nail on the head AD. It would make sense to after a cop, but I think One Fathom is the right choice at this stage.

Just to be on the safe side, I put on a scuba tank and protect myself.  :ninja:

Title: Assassin, the Game (Round 2)
Post by: AgentDrake on July 18, 2008, 08:33:32 PM
Could be. Actually, that makes sense, but it seems a bit of a 'volatile' clue, though, as some marksmen could potentially change rank by posting before the clue is solved.

None of the cops are Marksmen, so that's in keeping with the "none of the cops / has an aim / like that of my victim" lines.

The Marksmen -- at the moment -- are:
bibfortuna25
Ellessar's Socks
gil-estel
Glamdring
Josiah_of_Rohan
Mythdracon
NappyKorn
TheJord

Any of them seem to fit into the clue better than the others?
Incog seems to be saying that the victim is potentially dangerous-- which could point to Mythdracon, along with the line "before i fire." Granted, that's Incog firing, but it might have something to do with Dragon's (dracon) fire.
Or not. That doesn't quite seem to fit.

I'll keep looking, in case it's not based off marksman.

Not that I think it is, but a sniper is said to have a hawkeye. I don't think the assassin would go after the person twice.

I think Lurtzy has it.  "marked by a sniper" -> takes aim. aim is mentioned twice.  Great catch.

Or Poseidon.

A new planetoid was named just recently, MakeMake.  The only member with make in their name is Rathmaker.

http://www.nineplanets.org/days.html (http://www.nineplanets.org/days.html) is a site with all the planets names in different languages.

I have this nagging feeling he's refering to Gil-Estel.

The clue was:
I destroy the inhabitants of an entire island, and you might want this, g, it seems to be missing.

Gillian is Gilligan without a g - gilligan's island.

So I protected Gillian.   :D

Also Incog says s/he has left clues to their identity.  The previous message had "flying north for the winter" and "eh", so it could potentially, possibly, umm, maybe someone from Canada or someone that has been to Canada recently, eh.

Or something like that. Pretty sure Ulmo's got it with the gillian, though,

Yeah, I can't figure out who would be both a hero and a villain, otherwise. Nice reasoning, though I'm not sure about the "whole wears certain colors" part. That actually makes me think Thranduil, sonce purple is the color of royalty... so he would (figuratively?) wear purple instead of green...? Yeah, just about as weak as the Gondor = purple, Uruk = green logic.

Unless there's two victims. Seems an odd set of parallels.

Victim 1: Hero, defender, purple(?)

Victim 2: Villain, avenger, purple(?)

Incog didn't specify 2 victims, but it seems to be a possibility....

   NOLINKi am here

   yet another arrest
   are you not
   getting tired

   well well
   it seems that
   ...

At this point, the entire police force burst into the locked computer lab where AgentDrake was busily typing away his latest threats against society while eating a nice chocolate cake with mint icing.

In the ensuing struggle, AgentDrake whipped out a gun, and the cops were saved only by the quick thinking of sickofpalantirs who stabbed AgentDrake to death with his own plastic fork, hastily grabbed from where it still lay, half-sunk into a bite of cake.

Later analysis confirmed that the cake was indeed stolen.
(That, of course, explained what happened to that missing slice from Shieldmaiden's birthday....)

Afterwards, the following paper was found on Drake's dead, cake-and-blood covered corpse:

Quote
In the event of my discovery, an open letter to my "comrades":

It seems you know who I am. Well, well. what gave me away? Was it the cake crumbs on my uniform? I certainly hope not. It took me long enough to get the thing dry-cleaned every morning.

Ironfoot had it figured out. I made good on my vow as Incog last time to kill him first, and just in time, it seems.

Here's your record:
HawkeyeSPF - protected
GarrisonofGondor - protected
Shieldmaiden - protected
DainIronfoot - drowned; Kralik was on to something with that grammar. The victim wouldn't need cement shoes. With feet as heavy as DainIronfoot's, cement wouldn't be necessary.
meance64 - protected
Kralik arrested - 1 mark against MRLurtzy
Ulmo - protected
Gillian - protected
Felipe Musco arrested - 1 mark against Ulmo
HawkeyeSPF - slain; The Marvel Comics character Hawkeye begins his career as a villain, then becomes a hero. He is a member of the Avengers and the non-group called the Defenders. He wears a purple costume, while the very similar DC comics character Green Arrow wears a green costume.
Hobbit_Pizza - protected

Identity clues:

DainIronfoot's corpse was surrounded by ducks and geese... a drake is a male duck.
Along those lines, ducks... drakes... migrate. Which hemisphere they're in at the moment is beside the point.
"Eh" Yep; I've been in Canada twice in the recent past.
"to everyone i meet / i stay a stranger" The lines "To everyone he meets / he stays a stranger" are from the song "Secret Agent." Incidentally, the main character of the show from which the song originated is an agent named Drake. As I have said in the past, hence my username.

But believe me,
I am still alive.
I'm doing science, and I'm still alive.
I feel fantastic, and I'm still alive.
And when you're dying, I will be still alive.
And when you're dead, I will be still alive.
Still alive....

And as they read the last lines, AgentDrake's dead corpse was dropped into the dirt and buried.  :P

Yeah, I'm morbid right now.

I hereby award sickofpalantirs with the prestigious "Cop of the Day" award for saving his comrades by killing me with a fork. good luck explaining that one to the chief.

There you go, guys. The position of NOLINKIncognito is now open for the first person to PM me (as Drake. I'm not gonna log in as Incog anymore, so it won't do you any good to PM the dead guy....)

Especially a plastic fork.

Okay, now that this round is over...AAAARGH! I had Incog pegged the day I was uncerimoniously dumped in a river and covered in duck poop. The Canada trip gave it away for me, as AD didn't cover his tracks very well with the timing of all that (particularly by explaining approximately the same gap in time between Drake's last post before leaving and his first after returning with Incog's lack of posting during the same time period).

That plus Drake's uncharacteristic cluelessness this round led me to have my search warrant in hand when I was killed. I ALMOST protected myself too, as I had a hunch about the iron feet thing (since a past Incog had designed a clue around the same thing), but I didn't want to seem petty or anything since I hadn't done much this round to that point, so I held my tongue just a LITTLE too long.

Blast you, Incog!

*cough*

Okay, now that I finally have that off my chest, I understand that the new Incog has been chosen, and they've asked me to split this and prepare for "the end of all things". So, let's get this split and get ready for the next round, eh?
